I’d take a Desi Sills any day over A kid that doesn’t want to compete and be here.

I think you'd lose a lot of games as a coach if your sole criteria is not talent and fit, but merely availability.
Okay, Greg stepped into the Portal...the one and only time he could transfer on a free pass. And what high-major coach would pass on an elite, impact, player because they had a 'nice kid' and decent talent on the roster.
Answer: Not one. The promise to snare an elite talent--not the possible reality--is the driving factore. It's called human nature.
So, don't blame a player who this, one time, can explore what he thinks may be 'greener pastures.'
Blame the system.

P.S. And how many fans would not favor grabbling an elite player over a lesser talented player--but a quality kid.
Answer: None to few.

I think Desi Sills is a better player too.  Plays balls to the wall.

If the Blockbuster is Alvarado or Sills and Greg W comes back , what would be wrong with a 3 guard rotation plus Champy and a big man ?

We disagree there. I admit, career-wise it's closer than I thought (because CMA played Sills his 1st year and Mullin played Greg sparingly), but I still give the edge to GW.
But GW is the better player the past two years when both were starters, with Sills tangibly better at 2pt-range, but GW was tangibly better at 3pt range,  FT%, Apg, and Stls/g.
But it's okay to disagree.

Don't forget a positive about Greg is that he already knows the system. As we've found out with CMA's system is that it usually takes new kids longer to adjust.

There was absolutely nothing wrong with Greg's Dad's comments in my opinion and pretty expected that he'd look at LSU given his family lives in Louisiana.   This kid did every thing right here including he and Caraher starting that scholarship. Why the need to go negative? Jeez!

because when he said he’s leaving to find his value and worth, when he had plenty of minutes here  when not injured,  it certainly is a tell.  It’s a problem with this transfer game to begin with.  I’m not naive to this and nor should others be.  It happens all the time.  Negative? Me?  No, but I’m ok with moving on and trying to get better.

MCNPA.....not sure if you are on Twitter, but the comment that rubbed you wrong was just one out of endless praise for our program and CMA   It's doubtful Greg's father wanted him to enter the portal.  Knowing you as an extremely positive poster, my guess is (if you followed Greg Sr. on Twitter) you would really appreciate him

No I don’t follow Twitter much, you are correct but they did rub me the wrong way.  The programs he’s “looking at” also rub me the wrong way regardless  of GWill.

For a while I thought it was great for him to come back but I’m not so sure after looking at the programs he’s shopping himself to.
.

I am of the opinion that we should  look to fill his spot ASAP and get a roster that wants to be here.  SJU fans have been waiting for GWill to step it up and be a starter but it hasn’t happened and it’s nobody’s fault but his own.  Injuries have happened too and he’s been given plenty of Pt when he was healthy.    Bottom line though is that he got the red carpet and didn’t make enough of it.  He lost his spot to Dunn who played a lot harder and was more aggressive.

I’m sure he’s a great kid but as a SJU fan my interest is in SJU first and we have had a lot of kids bail.   A LOT.  Getting tired of it and just want to move forward with our team the way it’s going to be, not the free agency nonsense that is going on.   Greg should make a decision fast or we grab somebody better.

I never understand why people think GWill lost his spot to Dunn.  In any event, I disagree with you on Greg but completely respect your perspective.

I do think CMA would have pulled the trigger if he thought he had someone as good or better than Greg.  No way he is waiting.

When GW returned and appeared healthy, Dunn was starting as Greg did not get back into the starting line-up until Posh got hurt.  Dunn got into the starting line-up because of Greg’s injury and don’t relinquish the spot.  Therefore His spot in the line-up went to Dunn who replaced him.  It doesn’t matter if one is a combo guard and the other is a shooting guard,

And if he thinks he has someone as food or better than Greg, I agree he is not waiting nor should he.

Am I missing something here? Why are we talking about Alvarado and Sills like they are SJU bound?

I haven’t heard of anything in regards to those guys

It's not be about minutes with Greg.  When he was healthy he played as much as anyone.  Take a look at his game log.  It was 31-34 minutes a game (when healthy).  He played 40 minutes versus Georgetown and 37 again Seton Hall in the Big East Tournament.

Not to re-hash, but I think Greg was miffed by CMA deferring to an underclassmen in crunch time.  Right or wrong, I think that was a big part of it.

You could be right but he really will be miffed if he decides to comeback and Pinzon takes his starting spot (which some posters seem to think will happen).

Fact that they were seen on Utopia Parkway asking for directions to The Sly Fox means nothing to you?

:)

Sills played under Anderson & fits his style so that’s the connection

Jose Alvarado may enter the transfer portal and want to be closer to home in Queens.

I would disagree. To me, Dunn functioned mostly as a PG.  Tough to call a guy of his shooting ability a combo guard.  I feel Greg was competing much more with Wusu for minutes.  Also, when Greg was healthy, both he and Dunn were playing 30+ minutes. So, perhaps he wasn't always starting, but he didn't lose his job to Dunn.

Fwiw, Zach suggested that Pinzon was likely to have the least impact of all the freshmen and perhaps play the least.

I am not one of those posters as having seen Pinzon play in person a few times (albeit not this year), I am on record on at least one other thread that “the only way Pinzon plays over Williams is if Williams was hurt.”

I'd be shocked if it's not Traore who plays the least. I think all will make some sort of impact, even if it's not in the sexy aspects of the game.

Agreed.  Not even fair to Pinzon to compare him to a seasoned senior.

I would argue that Pinzon will be better than Williams will be for us, because I expect Williams to be somewhere else.

Here's all the schools that have contacted Greg.

https://twitter.com/NYPost_Brazille/status/1382744369355182086

Also, Zach said that Greg has done over 10 Zoom calls, that's a whole lot, most kids in the portal you see them take on average 3-5 zoom calls and focus on those schools.  Zoom calls are basically official visits during covid.  I know his dad mentioned he wanted to see his "worth"  I'm still a little confused on exactly what they mean by that.  Is he trying to see how much playing time the other schools will give him  or is he trying to see if he would be the 1st or 2nd scoring option?

Some pretty big schools talking to Greg including 2 from Final Four. See Zach was saying an hour ago that a return to SJU is still a possible option and decision expected soon. Paultz did say last week that this was going to be an eventful week!

Why wouldn’t Greg be pursued by such major schools as listed ?  When healthy he is known player with Game that was tested in the BE . He has many skills that any Program including ours would want .  I do think playing Wusu in critical games at crunch time miffed a lot of the guys . And , Wusu did fumble away a game or 2 in the last seconds .  But , as they say , “ Coaches Decision .”
