Greg W Enters Portal

Why wouldn’t Greg be pursued by such major schools as listed ?  When healthy he is known player with Game that was tested in the BE . He has many skills that any Program including ours would want .  I do think playing Wusu in critical games at crunch time miffed a lot of the guys . And , Wusu did fumble away a game or 2 in the last seconds .  But , as they say , “ Coaches Decision .”

I have no opinion as to whether Wusu should have gotten as much burn down the stretch but don’t recall him fumbling away any games in the last seconds.  Quite the contrary — he had some big drives.  There was the one pass to Dunn that was fumbled, but I think that was on Dunn.

There are some big names after him, but does he get more playing time at those schools than does here? I haven't checked their rosters, but it seems like it would be tougher to crack Houston's starting lineup than it would be to crack ours with a staff that knows him. I doubt he's one of the rumored "jealous" guys, but if he is, he'd be jealous at any Power team because he's not going to be the Man.

Yeah I am not sure how many of those schools are real and more importantly have a firm offer.

I maybe an outlier on this but I think there are some guards out there if SJU could get to replace Greg I would have no problem with if it meant he definitely would leave.  I really don't think the fortunes of SJU next year rise and fall on him returning or not.  I am not against him returning but I don't think he is irreplaceable.

Agree w Fordham re offers v interest. Btw, I know Anderson did good job of being point person on this with Greg and family and we’ll see outcome shortly.

If SJU has a choice of either Williams or Alvarado but not both who would complement the lineup best?

Alvarado IMO the better player easily, more durable and fierce competitor. No knock on Greg, but despite being a small duo, Posh and Alvarado would be something. To keep my remaining sanity intact I am operating on premise Alvarado is a dream. Nice to think about though.

I have confidence in our staff. They are doing a great job of retooling our roster. I believe that we will be fine next year, whether or not Greg returns. Having said that, I am still hoping that Greg comes back because he is a good player and we know that he has very good intangibles (great kid, good student and excellent teammate). Other guys we are considering may have good basketball skills but nobody can know how they might / might not fit into our team culture. With Greg, that's not an issue.

I really like Greg but, if you're offering me Alvarado as a replacement, I'm all in!!! Alvarado is a skilled player, a leader on the court and a true warrior.

100%

Chemistry. Culture.  All things we know Greg delivers on.

Anyone new will have to adapt to the system, culture, environment, etc.   Not easy.  And usually takes a few months into the season to figure out.

I think staff is being extra careful with their targets on that front: Aside from Smith and Wheeler being well coached, I associate both Vermont and Purdue with chemistry and a good culture.

As for Soriano . . . Stepinac had good coaching and a positive team culture.

Some guy named Johnson, who calls himself a basketball insider, just tweeted that it is very likely that Greg will return to St John's

Does anybody know this guy? Is he credible?

Phavre changed his handle so draw your own conclusion on him.

Of course Greg could come back

No he's not credible, that's Pharve Phan, he just like to pretend like he has sources, but he's just a huge troll trying to get followers on twitter.  He literally just seen Zach and other people on message boards and twitter talk about Greg, so he'll tweet he's coming back, if he doesn't he will say he changed his mind, and if he does, he will spam zach and other reports to tell them to credit him for saying it first.

If looking for credible information avoid him, BannerMtnMan, and Dylan Kelly all of them spam the #sjubb tag daily on twitter and none of them actually know anything or have sources.

You do realize just because a school contacts a kid doesn't mean they have an offer right?  I'm in Arkansas fan as well and I can tell you Muss has probably contacted 100+ kids in the portal, he ain't seriously talking to all 100 kids he's contacted.  If a kid is half-way decent and he's completely open and talking with schools it's going to be a ton of schools that contact that kid.

And while I do think Greg is without a doubt a high major player and he can positively effect any team he joins, he's still a role player, if he does end up at any of those bigger name schools on that list it's going to be as a role player, none of those big schools would be bringing him in to be a 1st, 2nd, or even 3rd scoring option, he's mostly likely a guy that they would look to as a spark off the bench or more of a defense/shooting specialist in a starting role, my guess is that's why he's taken so many zoom calls, he hasn't heard what he's wanted to hear yet.

Also as far as Wusu, I really don't get people's narrative that it rubbed people the wrong way that he played in crunch time, like he didn't deserve to play or something.  CMA didn't give Wusu those crunch time minutes he earned them, I lost count of all the big time shots he made going to the rim and hitting baskets within the last few minutes of the game, he was by far the best at getting to the rim in crunch time, it wasn't even close.  If any of the other players were upset and jealous of that, they needed to go because that means they don't want to play for a coach that plays to win, they just want to play for themselves.

He might feel that in his final year, regardless of minutes played, he'd have a better chance to go deep into the Big Dance with the teams he's been talking with rather than with St. John's -- an experience he (like most players) has always dreamed about. That said, I've liked him since Day 1, and am hoping to see him finish his college career with us.
