Wow, thank you Dr Phil for such a in depth Psychological analysis of Mullin’s personality , now and in the past . What are your credentials to attempt that ? You have a unfavorable bias towards Mullin that exhibits itself in nearly every post you make . Perhaps you need a little Analysis too ? Why are you carrying such a burden ? We are discussing College Basketball , a sport of Entertainment for fans . Regardless of results . Does anyone doubt the Giants weren’t limited by the injuries to their Personnel this season ? Not factoring the devastating effect of Lovett’s half a season absence is crucial to any critique of Mullin or the team results . Not Mullin’s inner psyche . Thank you.

Lavin's 5 years he took us to two NCAA tourneys and 2 NITs. He was unable to recruit in the end because he was a lame duck coach. What kid would want to commit to a coach when he has only 1 or 2 years left on his contract. That is why the school should have fired him after year 4 or given him a contract extension. This hurt with the Briscoe recruit. He always proved he could recruit and if we had a strong AD at the time he could have pushed Lavin to clean a few things up that were causing problems. This is all on Bobby and Oliva because they thought they were being smart.

This team has a ton of talent but the coaching staff treats them like they are NBA players they have absolutely no structure at all. I've watched 5th grade CYO that is better than the product i've seen the last two games. Seems like Mullin is very stubborn and arrogant and that mindset is not going to help things turn around.

I was decried as a Lavin supporter because I was fairer than other in assessing him. He was NOT a lame duck. Before signing Mullin, they were negotiating an extension that included a salary reduction to my knowledge. It was not a done deal that he would be fired, and the decision makers were sort of on the fence about him. The Obepka suspension contributing to the first round NCAA exit didn't help - but Lavin was not a lame duck but his status was unclear. My guess is that if he took a significant salary cut he would still be here.

The Assessment of talent on this team was mostly contributed by fans like you and I , before the season started . Simon and Clark has not played in competition for a year . We really knew little about their games but, speculated they were thoroughbreds because of the schools they transferred from . We made them into Berry and Mullin before was saw them play . Many here did and still do , not recognize the loss of Mussini primarily but, also Ellison and Williams . Mussini was our best shooter and would have been especially valuable in Lovett ‘s absence . No one likes Our Record to date but, even with Lovett we were thought of being a .500 BE Team . Without him , we are significantly less . Pure and simple . Ponds , misses Lovett badly as it puts enormous pressure on him to try and do both roles . It has impacted Shamorie’s game and wearied him .

I would take Mussini and Ellison in a heartbeat as the back end of our rotation players. We added no depth by replacing them with Clark and Simon (both better players, but by no means great)

Throw in a sick Bash and we really didnt have enough BE calibre players to win. On a positive note Trimble played well. One of Mullins biggest problems was the exodus of players last year. You will never be in a position to reload if that many players leave yearly. Tough to be a SJU fan.

When you have two years on your contract left you are considered a lame duck coach in college basketball. Kids who commit want to make sure their coach is going to be around for the 4 years they are there.

The off the court stuff his final year did not help his case. He could not recruit his final year because the administration did not make a decision until after the season when he had a year left.

and where is the Giants coach today? You don't get to use the excuse of injuries especially having only one when your totally lack of depth is your own fault. Roster construction had us with 9 schollie players one of which shouldn't even count so you left yourself vulnerable to even one injury.

Dear Slyfox,
I do have an unfavorable bias towards Mullin as "our coach" because he had no business being hired. NONE!
Seeing the end of the Lavin era approaching even the CYO coaches that visit this site made a half dozen recommendations not knowing that the squeaky wheels were already turning with no intentions to interview anyone for the job seriously. That was the height of incompetence that few universities are capable of in the world of college athletics. If you actually read what I write why don't you state where you disagree and why? Why do you assume I carry a burden in wanting what is or was best for this program? When you write your Red and White check is this the cluster fck you expect from alma mater? Are you some kind of glutton for punishment?
If you actually read what I said you would have seen I factored all the obvious excuses for the fans, from the most rose colored glass wearing Homers to the skeptics. Every single thing I postured has been discussed before about our coach. You should do a little research before trying to question my opinions.
The previous poster had stated "Mullin is very stubborn and arrogant and that mindset ...". Did you question how he came to that conclusion or suggest therapy for him? We all make observations here based on "BIAS". Others have said and are saying much the same things I have been saying. Some to the point of "plagiarism ".;)
Yes, we are discussing College Basketball! As disturbing as it may be for a few of the Homers here, that includes the coaching staff and not just the 18 year kids that play at the discretion of the great Chris Mullin.
If, on this so called "fan" site, making light of Steve Lavin's cancer was acceptable, questioning his mental health and fitness when his father died was acceptable and even whether he was still having relations with his wife then this coach is fair game becsuse, well.....he is the freaking coach and the buck stops at his door. Now, if you, Beast, Beauty and the other mavens of the world that are voicing consternation with my missives have any valid counterpoints please feel free to express them. I won't even recommend you get therapy even though your self flaggilation in defending the current state of affairs with repeated excuses going back to Brian Mahoney would make you a candidate for the group therapy session I am arranging. Please let me know if you are interested.;)

We just needed 9 BE wins and we would've finished top 40 in RPI and probably a lock for the tournament. Less wins than that for the NIT.

Two weeks ago I was excited about the possibility of beating Providence and Seton Hall and getting ranked.

Now? I'm so depressed I don't care. DePaul game was the final straw for me. Yesterday's game surprisingly didn't affect me that much because I'm no longer in denial about how bad we are.

I wanted Mullin originally, but if he doesn't make the NCAA Tournament next year he needs to be replaced immediately.

So sick of these seasons ending without any fun. At least there was the Nebraska game I guess.

Also there should be absolutely no excuses whatsoever for Marcus being out. We were favored by about 7 points in our last 3 home games. If you think about it, we actually had better odds to win the last 5 than lose them all.

Changes need to start this off-season with new assistants.

Geez, fans threatening to boycott games, some no longer going to watch on T.V. and now you of all people are hinting that you may stop writing your post game summaries! Where the hell am I going to get material from if not from a farm outside Albany? I may have to resort to calling and emailing someone who actually knows what's going on with our program for insight. No, Mullin is not going anywhere because St. John's bet the farm on him and Louie is still alive. This is actually the best of times for your unique sarcastic blog. While your witticism will likely be misread by most here (I know since everything I write here is misread) this divine comedy we call St. John's basketball needs all the humor possible to bring it, and us, back down to earth. My wife sends her regards to Mrs. Fun and is looking forward to getting her cannabis chocolate chip recipe.;)

Very well written and great clip!

I just watched the post-game clip in Jaden Daly's article referenced by Class of 72. Really wonderful moment between Mullin, Ewing and Lou. At the end of the day, it's these kind of relationships that matter and that make fans like me proud to be part of the BE tradition. The games are the games and can be frustrating as hell and the Lovett episode a lowlight for so many reasons; however, I will continue to root for both of these coaches and hope they can turn their programs around. Who knows, maybe Lovett pulling the plug on the season will bring them closer together and they will give us a game or two to remember yet this year.

Sorry. In prior post I meant to type: Who knows, maybe Lovett pulling the plug on the season will bring the team closer together and they will give us a game or two to remember yet this year.

I didn't get to watch this entire game because of work but I caught the final 4 minutes. What was up with Ponds he was playing extremely selfishly, it was a bad look. That one play where Simon brought the ball up and Ponds just stood there right next to him asking for the ball and caused that turnover was horrible. Like kid move around its not like Simon wont pass you the rock. Then he forced that last shot that wasn't the best shot available and seemed to whine afterwards.
It's obviously not all on him and reading the comments about this game no one seemed to play well but still he needs to have more faith in his teammates, it will probably open up his game a little too. That type of play and attitude plus the fact that he doesn't seem to always play defense will only cause issues with his teammates which wont help anything. Hopefully Mullin notices and reigns him in a little.

I have been extremely disappointed in Ponds play much of the season but particularly lately but the one thing I will say is that he rarely gets the ball in good position from Simon. I don’t have the stats to prove it but would be curious to see.

Can't say that's something I've seen but I will keep an eye out for that now that you mention it. To me Simon has seemed very unselfish the whole season. I like Ponds and he is our best scorer but I don't think he is the type of guy who can just take over and do it all by himself. He tends to get blocked when he tries that. He is at his best when he lets the game come to him. That is why LoVett was such a good match with him. Even in HS he had Rasheem Dunn to help take some pressure off of him. At his best he is very efficient, he seems to be trying too hard thats why he is struggling, it's not his game.

Some random thoughts ?️ Ponds shot has been MIA all season . I was up in NY and saw the Iona game . He wasn’t drilling his shots in warm up either . Simon has regressed badly from early season . He is a poor shooter , misses a lot of dunks , layups and for everyone who thought him a PG , turns it over a lot ! Plays great D, rebounds but, you can see why he would not get much PT at Arizona . And, a comment about Arizona and Coach Sean Miller . Much of which we see with our team as well . Miller was quoted as saying ,” I am having a difficult time getting my Players to play hard for me .” Wow! Miller has a squad full of top 100 players and this is some commentary from a guy who as a player , played 100 percent on every play at Pitt. If true , it might be a commentary on this generation of not only players but, all of them . Trophies for everybody , Wins and losses not important as long as I get my PT and points . Coaches and team, School , etc not as important as a Education but, only what it gets me to the next level ! For those nay sayers on here that are already overboard on this Staff and Mullin , consider this . Lavin recruited Jordan and Obepka, both of whom quit on the Team, School, etc . Lavin had major problems with DLO until it finally was dealt with and he calmed down . Remember he was suspended for 1/ 2 a year . Of course , Lavin was not a successful recruiter , especially after his banner first year . Locally , he was pretty much a Zero . Carrington , Rodriguez, Delgado, etc , were never really on Steve’s list . But , he chased the Sampsons, Briscoes, etc in trying to out recruit Calipari, Self, etc . Our Team this year was overrated by us fans , going back to last Season as we opined that Simon and Clark were going to be better than Mussini, Ellison , Williams. Think we would be better off now, if those 3 were still here ! Yes ! But, again is that on Mullin and Staff? Ellison obviously thought he wasn’t going to get enough PT here . Mussini , actually a Lavin recruit , opted early for a Pro Career in Europe . Williams was again a PT issue for a Player always battling injury complications . Much criticism has been directed at not getting a high level 5 th year Player . And, to some extent might be somewhat true . But, could we have gotten a Rousey to come here , when we thought we had Lovett and Ponds plus Simon ? No ? A big , Bruising 6’10” inch Center ? Again , maybe we missed on a few but, that type of 1 and done player wants a lot from a school and program . They want lots of PT, freedom to be more than a role player and a chance to be Showcased . It’s asking a lot for a 1 year contribution by that player . The criticism that exists here on this site , from seat of the pants Home schooled and Amateur Head Coaches is almost laughable , except these folks, including me, think our Opinions are more valuable than 2 HOF Greats . No player on this Team remotely has the skills and talents that Mullin and Richmond did . Thinking that they can inject that level of performance into this Group of Players is wishful but, not realistic thinking . And, it also assumes the Player can and will absorb the Instruction . Ahmed’s game has been formed over years on the Playground, AAU and Juco Ball. Is he going to change what makes his game and has carried him to this level ? He has some incredible skills but, also some unrefined weaknesses . No one doubts that he plays hard , just sometimes a little out of control . Will Owens ever be a under the basket player , capable of boxing out a Govan or Delgado ? Never , but his frame prevents that from happening . Nothing Mullin or Richmond can do there , is there ? We have to accept his game as is . Same with Clark and Simon , nice players who might or might not start elsewhere in the BE on teams with more talent ? They transferred from Elite programs for s chance to play regularly . Something they could not do at Arizona or Mich State . Why? Their Coaches there leveled with them that they were not going to be featured performers and might be recruited over . Thus, they transferred here , to a program in need of some degree of talent . Which , unquestionably , they do but, not at a level that makes them Special Players or game changers . Ponds and Lovett ? Talented ? Sure , but also barely 6’fall and both of small frames . Tough to get to the rim at their size and while they have been very good , they take a physical beating every game in the BE . How many times do we see them bumped under the basket from
Contact ? A lot , and much of it , without getting a foul call from the Refs? Why ? Is it the theory that Mullin complains too much on every call and the Refs left a lot of fouls on Ponds uncalled ? Who knows for sure ? Think about it . Just saying .
