Franklin Pierce

OK, a D2 team from Rindge, New Hampshire. Named after our 14th president (the only one from New Hampshire, and the only one ever to be defeated for his party's re-nomination). You read up on this guy, and you really wonder why they would name a school after him:

Anyway, the basketball team will actually be playing their third game in as many days, but the first two were successful, beating LIU Post (formally CW Post) and NYIT. Also looks like they got contributions from different guys both games:

Last year, they won 21 games, and made the second round of the NCAA D2 tournament. So, I wouldn't be totally shocked if these guys stuck with us for around a half or so, but we should be able to wear them out with our pressure, and the presence of Obekpa underneath.

WE ARE... ST. JOHN'S!!!!

For the senior citizens like myself who plan to attend I hope the blue uniforms are not worn if Franklin Pierce colors are red and white.
Sitting in an upper section Fri night it took some time to get acclimated.

Most of you may know Barbara Bush, who's maiden name is Pierce, is a distant relative of the former president.

There are 351 D1 basketball teams. Why are we playing a D2 team?

Because the NCAA couldn't find enough teams interested in playing in the losers bracket of the pre-season NIT. STJ was either going to lose a game or agree to play a D2 opponent. They chose the latter.

Sucks that they couldn't place a d1 team here.

We can also get this next year if we have to play chaminade in Maui.

I don't think voters would punish us as much for playing Chaminade -- they have name recognition and sentimentality may play a factor.

But as for Pierce . . . let's hope we're not sitting on 21 or 22 wins, because this game will bite us in the ass. Hopefully we win by 40.

Does it count towards our W/L? I'm pretty sure it does. A lot of teams have played D2 for their first game and they are all listed as 1-0 on espn and cbs sports.

Anyways, this is one of those games that means nothing if you win, but everything if you dont, so let's hope the guys get it done quickly.

Does not count for NCAA T consideration. Garbage game, but not our fault. It stems from NIT not being able to fill out schedule with D1 teams.

I didn't realize that they were a D2 school. I will no longer be attending tonight, I just don't feel like wasting time watching us drill a D2 school. Espically when we have another game Wed against a competitive opponent. As for why they named a college after Franklin Pierce, hey they named one after Robert E Lee. If he can have a college named after him anyone can.

wow.
I won't go off topic more than to note, I think you might read a bio of Robert E Lee.
America has produced few men with his leadership traits and character. He might have fought on the "wrong" side after turning down Lincoln's offer to be Commander of the Union Army, but even his fiercest opponents had enormous respect for him -before, during, and after the War. Pierce had, well, not so much. Unless, they have Lee's great, great grandson coaching them, we get an easy win.

Also doesn't count in RPI calculations. .

Going off-topic, but ... your references to the Civil War brought something to mind: Whatever became of the poster who went by the name Sheridan, Sherman & Grant (or something similar)? He posted regularly and was without question one the most polite posters on the board.

Yeah! What did happen to him? I liked his posts because he was so polite. Hey, SSG, if you are out there post something so that we know that you are O.K., please.

I'm still confused. Will this be added to our record and be something we'll need to remember to subtract later in the season? Or is are we still going to be 1-0 after tonights game?

All statistics from tonight count, including the result (for the purposes of our all-time records, I guess) but the game does not re: NCAA tournament purposes (assuming we win, of course).

I seem to remember him having posted something a while back about an illness. I sure hope he's OK and just took some time off from posting. He was always a gentleman.
