Francessa says

I almost didn't believe my ears yesterday when he was discussing the St. Johns UVA game he said he was going to watch the game and made it sound like he does not miss St. Johns games when he can watch. Surprising

I remember seeing him at the garden during the Mullin years. BTW, he was booed even then. Russo attended several games at Alumni Hall, sitting at the press table with his girlfriend.

?

Mullin left in 85. WFAN started in 87.

Man, I don't know about you guys, but I wish the name Francessa and any references to him were banned here.

The guy was non-existent on campus as a student, never had season tickets, and his post-SJU life has never shown any affinity towards the school. I'd be glad to talk about him if he ever comes back to the fold as an alumnus proud of his school and a fan of the program. Until then, I just hate seeing threads about him.

Yes Beast
but remember MF started college in Florida - didn't he play baseball until an injury - so maybe he only reluctantly returned to SJU back in Queens e.g. St.John's was not his first choice and maybe not his choice at all; hence the distance, antagonistic attitude and lack of support for his so-called 'alma mater".

all the best.

Why ruin a good bashing with facts?

Then it obviously was after 1987; he always managed to walk past the student section.

* Now that experts have identified a “hitch” in Ike Davis’ swing, this would be the time for WFAN to play the tape of that caller, several weeks ago — a polite, older-sounding gent — who dead-on claimed that Davis has a “hitch” in his swing.

WFAN doesn’t even have to air the part where Francesa interrupted him, cruelly mocked him as a know-nothing, then hung up.

Yeah he did do that but its still amazing this jerk Muschnick has a job by simply criticisizing every move a broadcaster makes

I don't like Muschnik either, including most of what was in this article, but that bit I found interesting.

Mike's biggest problem is he doesn't listen often. He is distracted by something (lately his iPhone) and if a caller gets off to a rough start he further tunes them out and dismisses them like this. But as we always say. He continues to get ratings thru the roof and we all tune in.

Big Mike always says he will do that job when he retires-- it's a sense-less job I agree.

The main thing that protects him is that in NY, when you argue sports, whether in a bar, or when we were kids in a playground (do kids today even know what the culture of a playground was?) you'd argue, be dismissive, and often offensive. New Yorkers don't get too put off by his fat, smug, know-it-all-without-much-basis attitude. For me it's hard to value his expertise, since he almost always does not possess any innate knowledge of the game, experience as a former athlete as a collegiate or pro, that would justify his rebuttal. In short, he's just another fat arrogant kid who kibitzed from the sidelines without ever having played.

I agree with half your point. The fact he never played the game or his size have nothing to do with it. The other part about his arrogance and being pompous no doubt that if anything garners more attention. But for someone in the industry its tough to break down the good ole boys walls of those who have played the game. Props to those who have played the game but it doesn't diminish the knowledge of those who didn't.

Now as for Francessa, he doesn't have the knowledge he proclaims to have :)

That's an interesting way to look at it. Never thought of it that way but it's definitely a great point. After all, this is New York where the people are much more brash and cold and also known for straight-talking. I mean, I got flipped off by some teenager who was trying to get around my car the other day and I didn't even think twice or react. It's second nature lol. Francesa would definitely not make it in a friendlier sports town like St. Louis.

Uh oh. Joe is telling stories now where HE is the older guy.

Wait till he is 50 and constantly rants against the young and stupid.

I agree 100% with your post. My point wasn't so much that he didn't play the game as much as if he speaks as if he has a higher knowledge of the game than the caller, when in fact he's just a spectator like the rest of us. As bad as the Mets are, they have a great broadcasting team. Darling and Hernandez know the game extremely well and their knowledge and honest critiques are worthy of a college level course in baseball. Both appreciate and know the history of the game. On the non-athlete side Gary Cohen and Howie Rose in particular are extremely knowledgeable and I love listening to them. Both Rose and Cohen possess knowledge worthy of respect without either being condescending in the manner Francessa is.

Personally, I'm hoping Fox1 can nab Cohen for our Big East games. He currently does Seton Hall correct?
