Fordham, Thur. Dec. 8, 6:30pm, FS1/570AM

If Mullin has Ellison and company deny Joseph Chartouny the ball it should be a win. We have a tendency to make players like Joseph Chartouny look like All World. He is their D'Angelo Harrison and his name better be on the chalk board this week.

He didn't play Saturday against Fordham so maybe he is hurt.

Think it was due to stitches on his elbow or something, would imagine he'll play Thursday.

Fordham's entire game seems predicated on pressing and trapping and turning teams over, which they are doing at an incredible rate - they are 1st in the country in steals. Obviously Marcus will be a big swing factor in how effective we are in handling that.

Fordham also takes a ton of 3s (21st in the country in attempts at 26 per game) but they haven't generally made many (31.5%, 281st in the nation). That said, when you are taking that many if they do go in there's a lot of upside, so something to watch.

Good points! Hopefully with Roomes gone, our guards won't be inclined to help out in the post & thus be aggressive on perimeter. As an aside, something bothersome last night was the amount of easy buckets by our opponent. With our streaky team offensively, we just can't afford to allow that. It goes beyond our interior guys guarding rim. Seems too often opposing guards too easily turn the corner on us.

Looking forward to SJU soundly beating my second alma mater. :)

Ponds, for as good as he is offensively, is not an intense defender. Neither is Ellison, in addition to not having very good lateral movement. Mussini, while an intense defender, has his limitations size wise and athletically. CSUN had some athletic guards. We are always going to have trouble defending athletic backcourts, and unfortunately our guards are getting very little interior help when they get beat. As my buddy Dave said to me Tuesday, Ponds is going to really get tested when he starts going up against the Harts and Brunsons of college basketball.

Ponds will get tested as he needs to improve his positioning and bigger more experienced guards will be difficult matchups. It's not because he is not intense. Ponds plays under control and sometimes that seems like he isn't trying 100%, but he is. I have seen him playing a lot of help defense this season to assist our troubled interior as well, which has resulted in being so important as a rebounder. I think Ponds will give big guards a lot of trouble guarding him, especially once he has enough offensive weapons that will keep defenses from collapsing on him.

I'm convinced that given the current makeup of this team, we need to learn how to play zone defense. That can help with the lack of size at guard and the pacifidy of our bigs. Can also help guys with speed deficiencies.

If nothing else it gives the opponent a different look and in that regard I think it helped against CSUN. Otherwise our only option is the ingenious we-dare-you-to-score-at-will/occasional block defense.

Red White Club Email
Dear Fellow Johnnies,

It's finally time.

As a season ticket holder, Red White Club member, or diehard fan, like me, you remember how the Fordham Rams ran up the score on us last season. So before BIG EAST play begins, we have some work to do.

After that road game last year at Rose Hill, our team circled this date for the rematch - Thursday, December 8, at 6:30 pmk at Carnesecca Arena. I know Christmas is approaching and the requisite decorating, shopping and office party circuit is underway, but for one night we need you to attend the Fordham game, wear red and root our boys to victory.

As one of the youngest teams in America, they feed off the crowd's energy and adrenaline. It's time to show what it means to be Johnnies.

Spread the word as it's time: Let's sell-out Carnesecca Arena and show the college basketball world what a real New York home court advantage looks like!

WE ARE ... ST. JOHN'S!

Always grateful,

Nick

What a difference time can make When I was a kid SJU was one of the best teams in America. When I was a student SJU was often a top ten team in America. For at least on and off over the last 5 or6 years we seem to be obsessed with how young we are.

Post article above notes Marcus did not practice yesterday & unlikely to play. Lourdes water please. Repole probably makes it now. :)

I'm guessing Lovett who was wearing a boot will still be out

Until we hear otherwise, I'm thinking they erred on the side of caution. He was putting weight on it as he moved around. He was walking with a little hitch in his gait but that might be because he had the boot on. If it was more serious they would have kept him off his feet.

Fwiw, at half time I spoke to someone close to program who said precisely what you just posted. Fingers crossed.

I would like to see him out and rest the ankle If we are to win tonite without Lovett we can not expect Ponds to score 25 Ellison will have to step up and give us double digits and Mussini who is capable will have to pick up Lovetts scoring We should be fine on the boards As in every game need coaching staff to step up also

I'm curious, would anyone who's not a fan watch any of those games? Might as well say no games to watch.

When I was a kid and a student there was no internet so we did all of our pointless whining in private. ;)

Gotta watch. First game attending, this season.
Go Johnnies.

To hell with Fordham, to hell with the Rams.
We're from St. John's and we don't give a damn.

Let's Go Redmen!
