Fordham Game

Just gotta say before I turn in for the night that this game included one of the best-played stretches of basketball I've seen by a St. John's team in years. True, it was against an inferior Fordham team, but the passion, the selflessness, and the smarts shown by these kids was a testament to them, to their maturity, to their character, and -- horror of horrors! -- to the coaching staff.

Even in games we won big last year, I don't ever remember thinking that we played particularly well. Different story this year. These kids like playing with each other, and its evident on the court. I loved the scene towards the end of the game where D'lo, Sheed and Branch were sitting on the bench and D'lo, in the middle, had his arms wrapped around the other two. And they were all smiling. It was a really nice moment.

Yes they are playing team Ball.Looking for each other, penetrating, taking better shots and better D
How this translates when we play a team like Duke or Nova we will see but unless we have a bad game and it could happen we should be in theses games

With essentially the same roster....where was this team last year?

Minus Sanchez and Samson, there's a camaraderie and cohesiveness on this year's team that was lacking last year.

Gotta give Marillac some credit where it is due man.

For?

Everything that he predicted is happening before our eyes, and it just so happens everyone killed him for that prediction. That post you said about sanczhes and Sampson he said a million times during preseason

So did I and lots of other people, only not repetitively. There have also been tons of outlandishly ridiculous predictions by Marillac, like the ones about Balamou and Jones being impact players this year. The fact is that in spite of my feelings about lavin, I said from the get go that if this team came together that they had a good chance of making the tourny. While its still early, and the tough part of the schedule is yet to come, they have played incredible ball so far and I would be surprised if they don't continue to play well and and make the tourny. Appreciate the Marillac suggestion, but think I'll give myself credit ;)

I'll take Balamou--although I said I doubt he gets any PT this year--but please don't put Jones on me. You'd be hard-pressed to find a bigger critic of Jones. I am not a not a fan of what I've seen from Balamou this year. He is (understandably) timid and those kinds of guys lose games for you. He's just trying to not get yanked when he's out there. He has no confidence.

I've been calling for Dom to play the four for four (just wanted to write that) years now. I was ridiculed for the addition by subtraction comment about Sampson. Credit is not what is important...just hoping fans will choose the optimistic outlook once in a while. We have a good team, I am writing in first person, let's just be positive.

How bout that guy leading us in rebounds with only 17 minutes of action.

I wouldn't put too much into yesterday's game. It was very lopsided. Jones had 6 boards in 17 minutes...Balamou had four in nine minutes. Pretty safe bet he would have outrebounded Jones if his time was doubled and he's only 6'4.

I will say that Jones looked pissed yesterday. He's typically easy to spot because he is so slow to react, but I thought he was Dom a few times and that is a compliment (this year).

If Pecora gets canned and Fordham doesn't object, Paschal would be high on my list. That kid will be a beast in a few years with the right conditioning.

Paschall's family I'm told is extremely interested in academics. If he did transfer, I don't think we meet that criteria. Just what I was told. If we had successfully recruited Donovan Mitchell, his best friend, perhaps we would have had a shot.

When Jones ripped that offensive rebound in the middle of traffic and got fouled on the way down in the 2nd half, Rico and Whitesell absolutely exploded off the bench. You could just tell by the way they kept congratulating him on it that him being an aggressor on the backboards is something they want badly.

It's in there with CJ. Maybe not as much as everyone would like, especially in light of his body/athleticism, but there is some real ability. He's shown flashes. Crucial that we find a way to get something from him 5-10 minutes per night, Obekpa will not be able to give us 38+ all season.

I have to say, I really enjoyed this game. Fordham came out and intended to get us rattled. I have no doubt it was Pecora's influence there. They were pushing, shoving grabbing and for a while, took our minds off the game and got our flow interrupted. Surprisingly enough, after Obekpa getting tossed, we played some of the best ball ive seen us play.

On offense our spacing and passing were fantastic. We ran plays, reversed the ball tremendously and did things I've never seen these guys do. Our defensive pressure was punishing in the second half, and instead of getting chippy like we did in the first, we just turned up the heat and pounded Fordham into the pavement with smooth offense and nasty defense. Was a lot of fun to watch and we have really matured as a team. Need to keep it up against a good st. Mary's team.

If CJ, JDR, Amar, Felix and Stewart can give us enough to keep our core guys fresh and sane, we should be pretty good and make the tournament with a decent seeding.

Wasn't that Otis who predicted that? :)

Where the heck is Otis?? Oh I forgot we are winning.

To me he seems like someone that will constantly have to be redirected to stay aggressive. I hate the way he fades after a few minutes on the court. He has a good skill set and the strength to body guys. He just doesn't react fast enough or with enough aggression. I'm not sure it's something that can be taught...hopefully it can.

Anybody know if there's any where to see a replay of the game for those of us who missed it?

Why is it that when I see a full game on youtube, its a st. john's loss. I see the duke game from 1999, all of games we lost to gonzaga 2000, 2011, 2014 etc.

Sorry I just saw your post , Watched the 2nd on comcast chan 401
Amar shows me very little at this point coach could have saved the airfare. PERHAPS HOPE HE WILL PROGRESS

He is a true Freshman that is adjusting to the American game after moving here in August. What do you expect? I'm pleasantly surprised with him to be honest. He' s a little lost in the half court right now and needs to learn to go get the ball better, but he sets good hard screens, has a very nice looking stroke from three, wastes no movement at all on his pick-and-pops, boxes out on every single shot, and hustles on both ends.

The 2014 class looked like a failure to most coming into this season, but I think we'll see it as a very solid class when all is said and done. We had two true freshman get minutes in our first win at the Dome in 15 years, and we might have three (possibly four with Henderson) members of this class in an 8-9 man rotation in a few years. Not everyone has to be a star.

I like jones and think he can be good next year, but I worry about him staying sometimes. He looks angry on the bench sometimes

Wish he would take some of that anger to the court.

He gets yanked within one possession of entering the game.

I honestly thought by his demeanor/face yesterday when he was put in the game that he truly was expecting a DNP. He looked like he just rolled out of bed.

The short rotation is working for now but we'll need minutes from another wing and another "big" to get through conference play.

Amar is not ready for this level (speed) of competition. And I'm not sure if he'll develop it by the early looks of it. He could be a good midrange guy but he looks lost on the floor.

Don't get me started on Amar. That play where he got a rebound, froze up, and let a Fordham player take it right out of his hand was a atrocious.

But it is true we need helps from a big. I look at last years Syracuse team as an example. Started out 25-0 last season, but were just gassed by march because of the short rotation. Lost to Boston college at the dome and got knocked out of the ACC and NCAA tournaments early.

Amar gets a pass as a freshman but that so-called 2014 class you see as solid has to go down as one of the most feeble attempts at recruiting at a high major school in recent memory. That you count last minute desperation walk ons, a disqualified player and a Euro lost in translation as a "solid" Class makes me think Fun could do a solid editorial on you. At least we will know it is tongue and cheek as opposed to your delusional missives.

DLo has had a lot of nice things to say about Amar's game in recent interviews. He says that he looks great in practice but is little overwhelmed in the games. Says that when he gets experience and confidence grows, he will be a very solid contributor. I'm taking DLo at his words. He sees him everyday.

Delusional, huh? You've been wrong about everything this season and I've been right on the money. It doesn't matter if a kid commits four years early or the day before the semester begins, they are still a part of the recruiting class. Stewart has a very refined skill--one that has earned the respect of all of his senior teammates and earned him minutes on top 25 team as a true freshman. Amar looks like he will be a solid four-year contributor as well. ADR is a very skilled mountain of a center and will contribute for four years if he is ruled eligible. Henderson has nice looking jumper and looks like a decent player. This is not a bad core of players to build on. This is a very skilled group with excellent size.

Add a JUCO or two and sprinkle in some top 50 players, and it will be a very competitive group of guys. Th

I'm not that down on Amar. As a big, you can expect that he will take some time to develop. At least he is not afraid to mix it up. We need guys like that. His shooting form looks solid. We need some production from him this season, so we may get a better feel for his potential by the end of the season.

No doubt Harrison is the leader of this team. As a sign of his maturity, he is gracious in assessing his teammates in a positive way. I'm not sure I'd take him at his words, but I'm impressed at a supportive, honest critique.
