Florida Hires New A.D. in 3 Months

Class of 72

Chris Monasch resigned May 2015. Florida A.D. retired June 2016. St. John's apparently thinks being last is as good as being first. Last in Big East Conference basketball. Last in Big East academic rankings. Least experienced Big East president. Least experienced Big East basketball coach. And, we are not even least in experienced athletic director since we don't even have one after SIXTEEN 16 MONTHS of a non existent search.

Search is made that much tougher for our administration as they are simultaneously searching for the real killers in the OJ case.

it would be a pay cut for him :)

Yes we lack an AD and it will stay that way until we find the perfect candidate, that is one who'll work cheap.

Most schools have an experienced athletic director with a solid understanding of running a college athletic department. Meanwhile our interim athletic director has been spotted around campus with the same book for months.

This void is just emblematic of demise of program for so long. Still running lemonade stand v a business with accountability, employee recognition/value, strategic planning & leadership. Buck stops at the desk of the President, provided he has one.

You actually have to want to hire an A.D. It's clear Bobby G. was happy to save the salary while having Oliva and now Meehan do the job on an interim basis. If he is acting the way he did with other university employees given higher responsibilities, he is not paying them a dime extra for their effort.

If he's going to be that cheap, he should assume the AD duties himself. It's not like he could do much less than the interim ones.

Because Father Harrington and a few others stole the beans, St. John's hired a bean counter. I sense Bobby is still sorting the beans, separating the good from the bad but it may have now gotten to the point where he is playing baby sitter with the athletic department full of prima donnas and, as a result, has been throwing out some of the babies with the bath water. There will come a time soon if our academic profile does not improve radically, that Bobby will need to be replaced with a respected academic leader. He may have served his purpose already IMO.

As for the athletic director we need a dose of reality in that the St. John's job may be the least prestigious in the Big East and the most challenging for likely a less than market salary. It would be safe to say not one AD from a Power Five would be interested let alone an A10 or lower school so I posted this thread mostly to break balls at SJU hoping some higher ups read this site. Many schools actually follow a different paradigm when it comes to multi million dollar coaches in both college football and basketball. The AD is relevant for all the "other" sports played by the majority of college athletes and ensuring both academic and financial resources are equal and available to all students in those sports. Let's not be naive to think that coaches like Pitino, Boeheim, Srewwinski, Nick Saban, Urban Meyer and a host of others that earn 5 times the salary of the AD ever actually deal with the AD. They know they are the big fish bringing in the Big bucks. It is the non-basketball playing athletes at SJ that are suffering from this void and hopefully soon it will be resolved. At least better than the Mullin v Rohrssen situation was resolved.

Get what you are saying, but IMO a talented AD is essential for BE strategic plannning, including expansion discussions & so forth. I don't expect to get a person from Big 5 arena & would be happy with a guy from a lesser conference than BE if he/she has demonstrated competence & upside. My fantasy is that Ed Manetta would have interest in a rebuild, but I am sure he is happy where he is. Hopefully someone at least reaches out to him.

That is everyone's fantasy re. Manetta but I think he earns a better salary than we could offer. Unlike Big 5 schools and schools that play football, St. John's is pretty much an open and closed case in the college world of Athletics. We have one money making sport and the quality and character of the coach and a winning record is what will always drive the bus. The jury is out whether Mullin is a skilled driver or will be forever a student driver. This year I am sure we will have many discussions about his prep and live coaching abilities. As for expansion, that is the domain of the Big East presidents and the AD just implements the organization and participation of all sports. Besides, there are only 4 or 5 possible expansion targets so the territory is well researched already. It is only a question of when to invite and whether Fox will provide the incentive.

I suspect our President will need the input & guidance of capable AD in any BE matters, expansion or otherwise.

True but remember he can always consult the handbook should the Big East make any moves which does not appear likely this year. Once the Big 12 expansion question is answered, St. John's and the Big East need to sit down and decide whether to expand with the support of Fox or remain in status quo.

Ed Manetta did two things no one else before had done:
1) Survey season ticket holders to actually get our opinions on what we thought of various things around the program.
2) Gave a gift to season ticket holders for purchasing tickets (this is still done today)

I still have nightmares about those damn surveys! Four of us had to manually collect the responses and enter them into an Excel spreadsheet.

And there were a lot more season ticket holders back then.

I just remember being pleasantly astonished that St. John's would actually want our opinions. No one before or since, in any area of the university, asked for alumni opinions.

Am I hearing @StJohnsU brass had lunch last week with a former @BIGEAST AD currently employed by another Metro area school?

I assume he means former UConn AD, Jeff Hathaway, now in same role at Hofstra, but who knows. The "glacial" process continues.
