Fired up for Villanova

I think the ass-whooping at Gtown was just what these guys needed. It was the first game where they were embarrassed and couldn't take away any positives or make any excuses. I expect a win Saturday.

Someone has to bottle up Pinkston. He's a beast... Time for Sanchez to play with some fire.

Overall, Sanchez has been a major disappointment to date
Especially for someone who allegedly had NBA potential
We really haven't seen much of that so far this season
Somebody needs to tell him that he is not our point guard

At almost 26 years old(according to NBA draft site), Orlando should have taken a huge leadership roll on this team. Very disappointing as you said.

Winning against Nova would be a significant W! We haven't had any significant wins yet. I don't get the idea of losses to top 5 teams as something to rally around. St Francis almost beat Syracuse at the Dome.. So what?

I hope, like everyone here, that this team gets its act together and puts forth a good performance Saturday.. All of us, have been waiting for this team to put out a good performance since they came here. This would be the time to do it.

Villanova plays team basketball. They have beaten teams like Kansas and Iowa already. They beat Butler at Hinkle, no small accomplishment. They trounced Providence last night. Even, at our best, the Cats are a tough foe.

Sure, we can beat them but, it will take the best effort each of our players has to do so.. Careless turnovers, dumb shots, weak defensive intensity will not suffice.

Lavin needs all his motivational and people skills to get this team's individuals to play well. They all have the game to do it and its' time for them to perform now. Not February.

To assure a NCAA bid in this new League, I THINK A 3RD , maybe 4TH place finish will be necessary.. And, a quality win.. Beating a ranked opponent now, might be just the ingredient to jump start a Conference run.

Based on what I've seen so far from other BE schools, Creighton, Nova, G'town look to be title contenders. Marquette has stumbled, as we have.. So, we have our work in front of us, if we have NCAA ASPIRATIONS.

... but hey if you read the comments on this site from a few weeks ago St.John's has more "talent" than Villanova.

The reality is that Wright recruits disciplined players that fit into his system rather than merely recruiting athletes that can run and jump.

And he recruits players that can shoot

Let's stop for a second:
Do you think Wright would have passed on Sampson? Obekpa? Harrison? Jordan? Sanchez? Branch? Even Greene?

I don't think so.

I don't think so either but he might have them playing with a little more cohesion, discipline and awareness.

Not to mention player development. I assume staff would have some role in refining the skills of these kids or is it all on them?

have to say i agree about Sanchez. He does not play like a mature kid ready for ANY professional league let alone the NBA. The kid has talent but looks lost and make poor decisions.

I am watching Villanova play Providence as I post this message and Villanova is waxing Providence pretty good up 39 to 21 with 4 minutes left in the first half.

I am watching it as well
Nova is up by 24 at the half (50-26)
If the St John's team that played yesterday shows up to play Nova at MSG, stay home and stay warm

The only thing going for the Johnnies is playing Nova at Madison Square Garden. For some reason I have a lot of confidence playing there. If this so called coach doesn't prepare them to stop the 3's then it will be doom and gloom once again.

How hard is it to recruit shooters? Afterall, if the kid scores on steals, fast breaks and layups but shows no outside shot, look elsewhere. Of course if he happens to be a point guard and looks to pass first then that's different. I want the talented athlete
who can score from outside. Is that asking too much?

We are going to find out if the players have given up, or if they have some heart and still respect Lavin. You've seen it before, teams quitting on their coach, and it might be happening here with SJU. if the johnnies do quit on their coach, and have a dreadful rest of the season which consists of games like the game played yesterday afternoon, I can't see Lavin being here for the start of next season. We will see though soon enough.

Lavin will have to leave on his own. No way our weak athletic director fires him.

You will leave 1.5M on the table for each year of contract?

Im not expecting a win. And although I am stating the obvious, if we steal this one, the season will have a different perspective. This board will have a different tone and it would be a real confidence and resume builder for the team. Even talks of making the tourney wont sound so farfetched. That said ,we cant look like chickens w/o their heads and must play as a cohesive unit, w a lineup that gives us the best chance to win.

Jack,
Come on, where is the money going to come from if they ate his salary? Ticket sales? lol Our gigantic TV contracts? Our generous rank and file alumni?

He is here for the duration of his contract, and don't be alarmed if he gets extended the way Norm did (not guaranteed) so that he can continue to recruit and not as a lame duck. The decision not to rehire him wouldn't be made until it was clear we weren't making the dance in the final year of his contract.

Thank you. I not only agree with you, but even if we do lose, I am not calling this season quits. It's our roughest home game for certain, and besides playing horribly on Saturday, we have the misfortune of opening the season with 3 of our first four on the road against good competition, and the fourth at home against a very good team. They are definietely digging a hole, but the worst of it will be reading this garbage on here, so I am praying for a win just for it all to stop. I'll continue to root for wins, as I had even in the dark days of you know who's regime.

Maybe most Richard but not me, I won`t be all "omg we beat top 10 Villanova, we`re awesome now". I`d wait until after the DePaul game, to see if the players got a big head after beating nova and gets smacked @ DePaul, or if they want to be business like and say to themselves, "if we lose to DePaul then the Nova win doesn`t mean a damn thing.
Most on here change in an instant, I like taking the wait and see approach.

im not saying to consider us awesome. If the posters don't consider us awfull that would be an upgrade.I too, believe in taking a wait and see approach.

StJohn's is today a 5 point underdog with a 31% chance of defeating Villanova.
