Fire Lavin!

I keep hearing this name, Steve Masiello. Never personally seen Manhattan play, so dont know what his teams look like but others seem to want him.

I read he's a Pitino guy. Im sure he is far superior to lavin as a teacher and X & Os, but with guys at that low level of competition you just never know if he can be a big time recruiter on the major conference level.

Danny Hurley might be a guy who could better hit the ground running as a recruiter, at least locally, just because of his family "brand name" and Jersey/NY metro connections.

That was awful today.

As much as I hated today's game and fail to understand the fact that we dont press for long periods of a game and fail to understand why he mixed the lineup the way he did (although it was probably a disciplinary matter), I dont think it is appropriate to place this-fire lavin- thread on the site at this time. I want to give Lavin support. If you dont support him, the players wont either and that will ruin the team. If the players realize they need to do what he demands and see that he still has the support of the fans they will come around. This isnt the pros. If you notice in the pros today the players rule. If they dont like a coach, if a major player doesnt like the coach or his system, the coach goes. Look at the Knicks with D'antonio and Melo. Melo wasnt happy, the coach goes. Look at the Nets, they didnt like PJ who actually did a great job once he took over and PJ is out and Kidd comes in who never coached in his life. But the players like him. Look at Charlotte, they win 3 times more games than the year before and they fire Dunlap because the players didnt like his style and complained. It now looks like it wants to filter down to the college level and I say NO. They need to respect the coach. Bobby Knight was right in how he treated the players who didnt comply. Also look at Kevin Stallings at Vanderbilt, he had the guts to sit one of his best players at the start of the game for 5 or more minutes because he violated team policy a few years ago in a game against Wisconsin in the NCAA. Vandy lost that game by about one or two points and the difference was that first five minutes of play. There has to be respect for the coach. The players are the tail and they cant wag the head coach. It is the other way around. So let's get off this fire Lavin binge, tell the players to do what they need to do, to play their butts off not only in the game but in practice and to respect the coaches. It isnt too late, both these losses have been road games, they can turn it around and Lavin is a good man and doesnt deserve to be ridiculed.

You do realize all the locals going to Lville over the years, Masiello kind of had something to do with.

1) It has nothing to do with being a good man. He's not getting the job done. That's why he's being criticized.

2) I don't accept your premise that we need to support Lavin so that the players will play for him.
Players either respect their coach or they don't. They play for him or they don't. What we say on a message board won't affect that.
Players sometimes rally behind embattled coaches, and other times they quit on them. Lavin is the leader of these young men, he has built whatever relationship he has with them.. whether it be good or bad, it's his doing. He sees them every day in practice and the weight-room, if they don't respect him it's not because of anything we said on here.

I do not think he should be fired either but the worry is that the team looks like it is not listening to him.
They have no life or energy which is amazing considering the amount of slashers we have. To me the second half of Xavier and the first half today showed a team that is not listening or playing for their coach. We don't look like we are a well coached team at all.
That is scary. I hope they turn it around.

Let's start with the premise that our basketball coach should be able to coach basketball first and foremost.
Of course he'll need to be able to recruit, and handle the press, and deal with all the other responsibilities. But we've made our last two hiring decisions based on the guy's recruiting ability.
Let me ask you, was Bill Self known as a recruiter before he got the Tulsa and then Illinois jobs? Was Izzo a top-notch recruiter? Certainly Calhoun wasn't at Northeastern.
Let's pick a good basketball coach who happens to speak coherently, and I would bet he can develop recruiting skills. That seems much more realistic than taking a recruiter and hoping he learns basketball.

But fwiw, Maisello can do both, as evidenced by what Moose said.

I think the thread was made tongue-in-cheek, and if it wasn't .. well, then it is a little outlandish. And I also agree it's not time for our fans to start wearing paper bags or anything like that. There's still a lot of basketball left to be played.
But if our fans online are going to start a wishlist for who they'd like to see as the next coach? I see no harm in that.

Here`s an example. Paul O`Neill, do you people know why he was one of the favs of Yankee fans?
Because when he made out, he went nuts. He showed he cared.
We want to see people show that they care.
Smiling shows us that he says : "oh well we just got our ass kicked, oh to the next game.
Makes mer wonder if he cares, or is he just there for the fat paycheck. I mean how do you smile after a game like that @ G-Town.
See ya late next week to talk about Villanova, if that`s a blowout then they showed me that they quit.
If they quit on the season, then I`ll quit on them. They better show fight again Villanova.

Just saw the following from the Hoya Saxa board, which also has a discussion regarding Harrison being, incredibly, 4 for 33 shooting over the last three games against Georgetown. Hard to believe. LAVIN brought a great energy to our program and a good public presence and awareness with the media. However, that has faded when we lost the the ESPN relationship. And the recruiting is now a concern, as is, of course, the preparation of the team. Anyway, just two comments from the gtown board - I guess it's good to get other perspectives:

First post: BTW, will someone tell me why Lavin is still at St. John's? Every time I see St. John's play they look totally unprepared. We have several major weaknesses none of which Lavin's teams ever seem able to take advantage of.

Second post: I used to think Steve Lavin was a good coach, but a game like to today makes me keep thinking that he got lucky at UCLA. DSR should have been getting constantly double teamed everytime he was on the court...force him to put the ball on the floor and beat u off the dribble; not let him get open 3pt shots..Also make someone else beat u like Starks, Trawick, Smith.

Really dumb thread. All I can think of is how Looie would have been thrashed online had their been a presence back then.
How about after the Florida NCAA game when Vernon Maxwell led the Gators to a close win with 5 other eligible players.
Looie would not take all prognosticators advice and press but had his team walk the ball up in a below 60's point game.
Yeah Fire Looie! that makes just as much sense as this.

The way Mark Jackson is doing at Golden State, perhaps it wouldn't have been so bad to go in that direction. Oh, I forgot, he had no coaching experience.

Does anyone know where i could see or read Lavin's press conference comments?

For those who are still advocating for Lavin, I will ask again........what are you seeing on the court that gives you hope? In what aspect of the game has this group of players demonstrated growth? What is our offensive strategy?

This is now the second fan base that has come to the conclusion that Lavin is not good at coaching basketball. If you are not seeing that, it may be (and i am hoping not to offend) that you don't have a basketball background and don't know what to look for.

Unfortunately as frustrated as I am with Lavin, this is premature. Do I predict his demise? How could you not after the past 2 games. But I'm not going to call for this guys head when we have 16 BE games left and the conference tourney.

Lav has some major coaching deficiencies. I was 30 minutes behind tip off running some errands. I start my Dvr and see that starting lineup... I immediately pressed the "live" button and not surprisingly saw we were down 33-11. Stuff like that doesn't fly. Neither does having jakarr Sampson somehow become a worse player than his freshman year.

I don't see a ton of hope for him but he has a bunch of games to right the ship. Hopefully he can do that (and maybe call mike Dunlap for advice in the process).
