Felix Balamou

Saw Felix twice yesterday. Very interesting player. I will say up front that the 2 teams he played he blew out, so I want to see him against better competition.

Felix is definitely a wing-guard and I spoke to his coach who said St. John's will use him as a "2 or a 3". Not going to be used at the point.

His best attribute is definitely his body control. He's a phenomenal athlete who hangs in the air and is a great finisher because of his ability to hang in the air and his exceptional body control. Once he gets to within a step or his jumpstop from the basket, its a wrap. He's scoring. He also knocked down the bulk of the jump shots he attempted over the course of bulk games. His shot is definitely a work in progress as it has a small hitch in it at times. As for his defense, I want to see him in a higher-level competitive game before I judge that. Looks like he has the tools to be a good defender.

Now, does this mean that he's going to play much next year?? I don't know. Is he taking minutes from D'Angelo or Phil?? No. Is he better than Darrick Wood if he qualifies?? Haven't seen Darrick, but from what I've heard from people that have seen both players play, no. I think Felix will have a tough time seeing the floor much next year but if he's PATIENT (something that a lot of players aren't, as you can see from the 400+ D1 transfers this year), he can see the floor in future years.

He's better than I expected/heard about him. He's certainly not the "guard version of Dwight Meikle". He has D1 tools that can be developed into him being a contributor in future years.

Don't get to see any of the guys where I am until they play during the season. So it's nice to see a write-up on the players coming in from people who have seen them.

As far as playing time it would surprise me if Coach Lavin didn't go over that with any of the players he has recruited. But as you say they do need to be patient as the transfer numbers are getting higher. But obviously this will be a much deeper team and will be better to see minutes played more spread out.

that court looks small to me...is it 94 feet??

No. Its like an elementary school gym.

thanks moose. forgive me for my ignorance, but what makes it such a popular place to play, especially given the fact its such a tiny gym

I don't really know the specifics but I'm assuming its easier for tournament organizers to get a gym like that for such a long period of time. And if the organizers are good they get the big names and it doesnt matter how big the gym is. Same goes for Port Chester CYP tournament in March. Gym is even smaller but its been a who's who's of great local products for 50 plus years.

Watched the first quarter - Obekpa doesn't exactly box out , rather block shots. Balamou is athletic; shot doesn't look great. Typical high school players - score on fast breaks and dunks.

If my memory serves me right wasn't St. Ann's high school gym on 76th street ( N.Y.C.))so small that the opposition's foul line was backcourt. Played there when Louie was coaching the Stanners.

York Larese and Tommy Kearns, part of Frank McGuire's New York to N.Carolina subway.. I think Willie Hall came to us before St. Ann's became Archbishop Molloy.

Per Zags....

“Every time out he gets better,” Konchalski said of Balamou. “He’s always been an extraterrestrial athlete. He jumps like a grasshooper off two feet.

“In the past he was a very poor shooter, but he’s improved that. He doesn’t have much of a 3-point shot, but he’s a good mid-range shooter. He gets great elevation.”

Asked what his upside was, Konchalski said: “I think eventually he can be very good. A year ago he was a low-major player. Two months ago, he was a mid-major player. Right now, he might be a high-major player.”

As I have been saying for a while Felix has Paris Horne written all over him.
As the 13th man on the team he is a great get.
I believe he can contribute in limited amounts from day 1 and look for a solid contribution from him his junior and senior seasons.
