Felix Balamou

Per NBE Basketball....

Felix Balamou (Our Savior New American 2012) – Balamou is a 6’3” wing from Guinea, West Africa with some serious athleticism. Every time I looked up he seemed to be floating above the rim and making another play for his team. He made 8-14 shots including a couple of dunks that were on par with the best of the day. Balamou’s overall ball skills and perimeter shot are still a work in progress but he is still very new to the game and by all accounts a great kid and a hard worker.

He's not a bad prospect, and we must remember that we're woefully short in our roster. A kid like Balamou is not bad if he's our 13th man and brings us Obekpa. I too prefer some shooter/scorers, but obekpa is a rare shotblocker.

Felix Balamou is a flat out athlete. I have had the chance to see him play and practice on a daily basis at OSNA. He is a wing player that like to spread the floor and drive. He also likes to play down low and is great with both hands. Above average free throw shooter. He can get to the rim and has great speed. He's 6'3 and seems like a great fit for STJ.

I liked his vision and passing in the scrimmage I saw vs. St. Rays. Would like to see him focus on that because its his ticket to playing longer.

Also whats you Obekpa report?

From the games that I have seen at OSNA, Obekpa is a huge defensive presence on the boards and with his shot blocking ability (he might be one of the best shot blockers in the country). His offense game is still a work in progress, but his last few games has found double digits in points. Free-throws are something he needs to work on. OSNA currently headed to Memphis for the Penny Hardaway Classic>

I don't dislike Balamou. He plays really hard and is a sick athlete. I just never see him shoot so don't know if he can. We need lots of bodies so I'm not averse to taking him. We can use him to run, press and trap.

The only thing that I worry about is that he actually qualifies academically....especially after 3 not qualifying this year, I think it would suck to get a commitment only to find out come september that he can't play

zags take on Balamou's visit this weekend:

“Felix enjoyed watching St John’s at Madision Square Garden in their win over UCLA,” Our Savior assistant coach Eric Jaklitsch told SNY.tv.

“He liked the way the team played with only six players against a historic program like UCLA. He enjoyed his time with the players and the coaching staff. He got a chance to see some different spots in NYC that he has not been to before.”

side note - is Felix 2012 or 2013? I was under the impression he is 2012, but this thread is in the 2013 section.

I think he is class of 2012 in theory, but his grades may make him have to prep next year...let's hope not cuz i would love to have him and chris on the team

Moose/MCN, have either of you seen him play? He would be a backup to Branch?

He's not going to back up Branch. I saw 2 or 3 full games on the Internet, very good qualit games against st. Rays, ny panthers... He's extremely quick and athletic. Game is kinda like Cedric Jackson at this point, although a little taller. Can be a fantastic defender and handle the ball enough. Good slasher as well. As a SG, I don't know if I've seen him take any outside shots, something he needs to learn how to do. Right now I see him purely as a kid to develop as a defensive stopper and help on the press.

Strickly adds depth but not a backup to Branch.....maybe Greene in a couple of years. Just a caveat with Obekpa, GG has a more developed offensive game and no one should pencil him as a starter should he sign if we sign Sanchez and Sampson. Don't be surprised to see a three forward offense that can run and score as opposed to a center that provides only rebounding. Just my opinion but Obekpa is a couple of years away from being a post presence.

I like Obekpa's soft jump shot. But post wise he doesnt have offensive moves.
