Fall Staff Visits

A small forward is also a wing. Kid is 6’10” SF with definite wing-type skills. Kid looks pretty good. Tayshaun Prince-sequel build.

Thank you. As I start my 39 th year as an SJU fanatic I can honestly say I can’t remember a time when all 4 staff members were out recruiting on a daily basis. It is beyond refreshing. I feel like we have been asleep for years in terms of recruiting and now everyone has woken up and is trying to make up for the years we were dormant. Every day we read about new names which are realistic and high level names that are true possibilities, it is a joy to follow recruiting once again.

Amen. I couldn't have said it better!!

Last time was early Lavin. Chiles was the horse, Rico was involved and Lavin was great at building relationships quickly and seemingly always in touch with tons of both top and attainable prospects. Dunlap wasn't, of course, but with Lavin bringing his A game we could get away with leaving Dunlap in the lab to run practices, game plans, etc.

This staff has done more real recruiting in 5 months than Lavin or Mullin and their staffs did in 7-8 years.

Staff’s approach to have multiple players in hopper at positions of need is refreshing. Yes, some elite guys were out of reach, but others, like perimeter players such as Guess, Kadary and Cole, are certainly in SJU “sweet spot”. Not being dependent on one recruit beats last second nail biters. Taking Posh right away & not playing long game with Curbelo & Diarra is another example. Just beginning the rebuild, but hard to refute notion that this regime is smart, energetic and strategic in recruiting arena thus far.

I was just thinking the same. The benefit of having multiple coaches willing to spend a lot of time in the road means you can have multiple embers burning instead of putting all your eggs I. A few baskets. It’s also clear the staff is leaning on their established relationships to get things going fast. I really like the look of how the 2020 class is shaping up and excited to see what they can do in 21 and 22 with longer lead times.

The staff debate has been moved into its own thread. Let’s try to keep this thread about current recruiting.

“Anderson and his staff stopped in at Our Savior Lutheran to watch their lone 2020 commit and his teammates, Max Amadasun and Dylan Wusu, both of whom hold offers from the Red Storm. The presence of Anderson and a pair of assistants on the trip indicate St. John’s high interest level in nabbing multiple players from the group, which also played together on the NY Lightning on the Nike travel circuit.”

Fwiw, staff apparently likes WuSu’s potential.
