Expectations

Unrelated to the title of the thread but to me what hurts more than Briscoe which I don't even fault Lavin for is losing Mcullough and him going for 20 and 9 last night. That hurts and thats a position we had such a need for and for a while people were saying he was a lock for us

Thought same thing while watching him the other night, Not sure what happened between this article and when he decided to commit:

http://nypost.com/2011/07/08/hoop-g...spect-mccullough-calls-st-johns-dream-school/

IIRC:
McCullough visited a practice at SJU.
Lavin slow-played it.
Boeheim visited McCullough at a Brewster practice.
McCullough committed to Cuse.

Happened in a span of a week.

I was more pissed about this than losing any other recruit even Briscoe because he genuinely seemed to want to be here.

But only him, Lavin, the staff and Boeheim knows what transpired behind the scenes.

Lavin and St. John's had won back NY ( with Norm Roberts players), we had a top 5 recruiting class. ....then Pelle disqualified, 3 players attend phony Philadelphia prep program, Nurideen Lindsey was NOT the next Allen Iverson, time respent recruiting Sampson, cancer, abysmal record and before you could say Syracuse, we had lost him. That has been the familiar refrain since then.

I was at The Garden last night and all I could think of was that CM would have looked great in a St. John's uniform, particularly this season.

Whether watching last night's game at the Garden or at home, I think we all ruefully pondered that thought more than once. Kid looked good; he'd look even better wearing red.

Generally when a kid says that you're his "dream school", he's yours to lose. Tough one, especially with where we stand today.

I'm guessing a check bounced.

I believe we were Malcolm Grant's and Corey Fisher's dream school as well. Those worked out well for us.

Means he is trying to get something more to go elsewhere

It has literally been years since I have posted. However, I have checked this site religiously nearly everyday since I was a student. I find myself frequently contemplating this same question. What are we as a program? Honestly, am i delusional to think, or hope that we can be a consistent winner? A top 25 program?
I will admit, i drank the Kool Aid when Lavin came on board, but honestly, I expected a great deal more.
Among my biggest frustrations:
1. Lack of player development. I have high hopes for Jordan this year making a huge jump (early returns are good) but what about Dom or even D'lo? They are essentially the same players they were their freshman year.
2. A lack of New York players. We consistently get beat in our own backyard. I know NYC and the surrounding area is not what it was...but really, we can't keep a few of these guys home?
3. The fact that we don't seem to be well coached. I feel all of Lavin's teams are undisciplined. Poor free throw shooting and rebounding.
4. I also am extremely frustrated with the Thomas and Adonis situations. This has been a consistent problem under Lavin's regime.

I would appreciate any and all feedback. May I am off my rocker. I am by no means an expert, just a frustrated fan.

You can expect to watch some 18-20 year old kids playing basketball. Try and get a little enjoyment out of it and move on with the rest of your life.

.
Player development looks good for Obekpa this year so far. He spent his. Summer in Houston. Does NYC have anything close to the NC pro-am summer league? Where NBA ballers and college players team up for the summer! You get like John Wall playing with UNC kids, Stackhouse, lots of alumni of the big 3 coaching and playing.
I remember years ago the Jersey shore had something just as good I know Mullin played in it

The slow-play is the biggest bullshit recruiting technique you can do if you aren't a top 5 program. No kid will be slow-played into coming to St. John's. Not sure I want to offer every freaking kid like Providence or Seton Hall, but Lavin should not be doing anything slowly.

A dime store mannequin would look great in a St John's uniform at this point.

And they usually get it!

Coach Hurley and URI upset #21 Nebraska in OT last night.

And a talented local kid did well;

@JonRothstein: URI's Hassan Martin looking more and more like an All-A 10 player. Had 8 points, 12 rebounds, + 4 blocks Saturday in win over Nebraska.

I have been a season ticket holder since the early 80's.
I would like to see us run a respectable and successful program. We have been in obscurity for too long. The Lavin aura from his hiring is gone. He has not built a foundation for the basketball program to build on. It's like a fire drill every recruiting season. When the kids commit and play, we now have to worry about ineligibility concerns that come out of left field.
Over the last two years we have basically one or two recruits. We will scramble again for any player to come. It does not seem like he is the recruiting maestro everyone said he was.
Maybe I am too optimistic but I truly feel we can be a top 25 program again. We have the resources and play at MSG.
PS this year will be a tough one as I don't think the players have improved enough as a team to overcome our size disadvantage. I will be at the games like always. Thanks!

If you think this year's gonna be a tough one, just wait till you see our roster next year.

Agreed.

I think he was feeling himself because he had 2 back-to-back top classes (even though the first deserved an asterisk) and McCullough was on campus.

I believe this is where he never adjusted to the recruiting shift since his UCLA days.

Funny you bring up Providence.

Cooley offers a lot. But he also makes sure he stays on top of kids. He's notorious for that. He'll show up at every single game that he can for a recruit.

It's always no days off for Cooley.

Lavin has shown at times that he feels the recruit needs him more than he needs them.
