Expectations

One poster hates the coach because he "pushed" Amir out. C'mon, really? Some because Lavin hasn't shown enough respect for their HS coach buddies. Others because their favorite player doesn't get enough minutes. Others because, simply, they are miserable bastards. Look, we can all criticize a lot of things that Lavin does. We all unanimously agree that heis not a great X's and O's coach. But to regurgitate the same crap over and over again is tiring. It makes this board a miserable place to come to, rarher than a place to come and discuss St. John's basketball. Besides the repetitive posts, the worst thing is the personal attacks on the staff. I don't know any of these people and none of them has ever done anything to me. I have no reason to have personal animus against any of them. Same goes for the players and other posters.

Right, because what he did to Amir is the only reason I don't like Lavin.

Well so much for that....

Not really sure what you expect; you rail against players you don't like (see Pointer as a prime example) blaming them for the team failure when in reality this group of players and coaches just have not jelled in 4 years. By and large the team lacks the committed effort to the dirty things (D, loose balls, rebounding) that wins basketball games. Their effort and performance in big games i.e end of year conference games, BE tournament, etc. has been poor, just poor. I root for the team every game but will not analyze through rose colored glasses ever. Outside of Harrison, I am not sure there is a player on the team that is concerned with winning over personal goals, and I am just not talking about getting to the pros although that is part of it. Bottom line for me, as I have said, I find this group of players and coaches hard to root for because of the bed they made; no other reason. I exclude Harrison who I have a ton of respect for, which is a 180 from my early opinion of him; just ask Moose. I understand the frustration of coming on the board and reading the same posts over but your posts are also very predictable. The truth is this is the same team we have seen for the last 4 years, hence the same opinions. Doesn't mean we aren't rooting. just means we comment on what we see, just as you do. We just see the same things as you only differently.

I realize I am as repetitive as the naysayers, but this is a community to support St. John's basketball. That is what I am doing. Am I a model poster? Clearly not. I was banned in more places than HGH during the Norm years.
haaaaa. there was a time when marillac went batshit crazy because of Norm. Those were funny days. Well maybe not so much fun being a st johns fan but it was funny reading the boards

Hahaha

We know where you and 90% of the board stand with Lavin and this team. These guys are not smart enough, skilled enough, they have poor fundamentals, etc. Who disagrees with that? I don't. They aren't going to change this year. If they have to win based on that criteria....they are toast. Lavin isn't going to be fired mid-season. If we don't make the tournament this season, I would be all for a change, but this team is 3-0 right now and I don't feel like it is the proper time to obsess over it. Keady is giving quotes about fan bases beating in the brains of coaches. Why make it harder on the staff, the players, and the fans by posting the same negative junk? Being critical and offering critique are completely acceptable on these boards, but you and several others have gone so far past that line. E.g., not a single one of Otis' posts alone have ever crossed the line, but, taken as a whole, that dude is simply unreadable as a poster. You know his message before ever reading his posts.

I have a problem with Dom...this is true. My biggest problem with him is that he is so insanely athletic and has so much potential that he was flat out wasting with his style of play last season. I write over and over how the kid should be putting back two dunks a game off the offensive glass with his special talent. If I didn't think he had the ability to change, I wouldn't be so critical of him. He was the #35 ranked recruit in the country in 2011. That makes him one of the highest ranked recruits we've EVER had. I want him to see what I write. I want the staff to see it. Maybe I'm being naive, but I think sometimes they do (not just mine).

I could write a book on the things I don't like about Lavin. In terms of basketball philosophy, he and I couldn't be any more different. I like physical, structured basketball predicated on defense, rebounding, and ball movement. Players should play to their strengths and avoid their weaknesses at all costs. I would never allow Pointer and Sampson to make a bad play on offense and then run and foul someone immediately and stay in the game. How often did that happen last year? He lets the inmates run the asylum. Without completely sacrificing my anonymity to the masses, I was named after a relative that led the nation in rebounding with a staggering total. That tells you a little bit about my approach to the game.

You deserve to be outed for such a long missive Marvin.

you'd have banned yourself after a week :)

I'm going to the Garden on Friday fully expecting that we'll be playing Gonzaga, and I'm sure as hell not expecting us to lose. The Zags look very good so far, but this is why they play the games and why we're fans. Because we're good enough to have a chance.

Our team has talent, has played well in big games before, and while we may be flawed, so what? We can't change that now and I won't root for them any less because of it. I'm looking forward to next week to see how we step up and how we fight; to see if several guys can put together a good game at the same time instead of the inconsistent play we've seen so far. I trust that we will because these same players have had big games before. Those are my expectations.

Amir was one of my favorite players over the last 10-15 years. The kid brought it every single game...hit the deck harder and more often than anyone since Postell. I actually feared he would get hurt with the way he crashed the glass. Perhaps this is another reason why I t'd of on Dom so much. It was clear it would be one or the other. This team could have really used him these past two seasons. He would have looked really good with Harrison and Jordan and their take no prisoners approach. He would have been good for 1-2 corner treys ala Horne, 2-3 nifty lefty drives, some board, and tough versatile defense. I was looking forward to seeing him play this year before he blew up on baseball. You can't place a value on kids that are willing to be that selfless and do the dirty work.

I wonder what the rules would say about him coming back in December since he never played for Cal St. Northridge and wasn't on a scholarship ;)

It's funny you say that. I've given that a thought several times over the last few weeks and just figured it was a pipe dream. Do you need to sit out again to transfer to the team you just transferred from? Regardless, Dom has the ability to do many of these same things if he can keep his focus and give max effort. Wednesday night was a good start.

Spot on, Marillac!

I have concerns. I leave games feeling somewhat disappointed---even after a win. I just can't imagine coming on this board everyday to say the same negative things about a coach that has brought drastic improvements over where we were before he got here, albeit not as much as I would like. I could never come on this board and tear down players (as opposed to honest critiquing) because they are getting more minutes over a player that I like more. This place is getting ridiculous.

Who tears down players besides Marillac?
Otis? Me? Monte? Simmons? '72?

While I agree that there is a lot of negativity directed at the coach, almost everyone on here roots for the players.
The worst you'll hear is a complaint about Dom's rebounding or a critique that we'd be better if Phil drove hard off pick and rolls.

Everyone needs to recognize that a sizeable contingent of posters likes to come on the board and vent the frustration they have watching the games. If you don't want to read it, then dont. But 40% or more of the fan base feels that way. So get used to it.

Garrett was such a great teammate. It's absolutely true how selfless he was.
And he played d. I remember when we were undersized and asked him to guard jack Cooley in the game against nd at msg. He shut down a potential BE POY

I don't think you have to sit out if you return to the team you transferred from. I also don't believe that you have to sit out a second year if you transfer to any team without playing. Plus, he was never on scholarship (although it counted against the team's #). He'd be fine with the NCAA, but the question is whether the Reds would be willing to wait 6-8 weeks for him during spring training.

I was kind of joking around, but I would never rule anything out the way things have gone with this class. Guys have come and gone and come back more times than I can count.

It's not going to happen, although I would love to see AG back in Queens.

The Reds also added him to their 40 man roster this past week.

As I understand it--from listening to Sandy Alderson--that is done to protect players from getting nabbed by other reams and not on how close a prospect is to making the team. As a 6'6 lefty with a 96 mph fastball, it seems likely that he would have been protected. I can't see him in the majors any sooner than September 2016 if EVERYTHING went his way. He only pitched at class A last season and has quite a few guys ahead of him.

Garrett is ranked as the 18th best prospect in the Cincy organization, but he he is the 15th ranked pitcher. Most of the guys ahead of him are the same age or younger with experience at higher levels.

Knowing that, maybe they would give him the time to get it out of his system? He's on an innings and pitch count anyway. Very long shot, but would that honestly be the oddest thing that has happened with this group? It seems like everyone has left at least once.

Not happening.

You wrote the same exact two words when I posted that I thought Obekpa would decide to come back after he announced his transfer ;)
I suggest you go back and look at your track record of predictions. You let your emotions get the best of you a lot. This latest, I guess, is a dream, so dream on. Hold on, Antoine Mason is at the door. :)

I have 2 expectations for this season. 1. Hanging with Weatherman,OLV72,Paultz&Ralph and hopefully Kranmars and the rest of the 114 crew at msg games. 2 sampling the bronx pale ale there

As far as the season I have low expectations so I'd rather keep them that way and hope to be surprised on the upside and hopefully see D'lo make it to the tourney

Hey couldn't read all your post Mar, but I assume you are like me are eternally positive. Here are my expectations, I expect that this team will be a lot like the 2010-2011 squad. There is no reason this senior laden team can't get to the NCAA tournament.

DJ Kennedy and Paris Horne came to play their senior years and I expect Dom and Greene to do the same. There is no reason this team can't win 20+ games and make the tourney.

How did they get Marillac from Denis Rodman? :)))

This is probably the funniest thing I've ever read on these sites beside the Joe3 t-shirt thread. Great job!
Happy to be of service!

The list would be 5 pages long.

I never predicted Antoine Mason would come aboard...just hoped like hell he would until Niagra blocked it.

You want the negativity to stop? No problem. Just have the team play 40 minutes of balls to the wall basketball against Minnesota, and, win or lose, their will be sincere praise for the team.
