Embarrassing

Pitino‘s rant is just an example of what is coming in college basketball. Once the NIL money gets revealed to the fans the athletes are going to be open for criticism from both coach and fans. Then the player can transfer for being picked on.
How long before the average fan, not the posters, drops college basketball.

The best thing college basketball has going for it is how unwatchable the nba is.

Carnesecca had some good post game rants. I witnessed a few during my Torch years.

Would I like it better if Pitino was more toned down? Of course. But I also think he honest about being the worst year of his career. He didn’t just come here to lay groundwork for the next guy.

After being exiled to Greece and coaching at Iona, this is his last chance to win big, and he is in the process of losing one year. This offseason, whether anyone cares (and we all do, but it’s hard to think about it while watching what is currently going on) will be massive.

The NIL is firmly in place (even with this dud of season) and players have been targeted (like it or not these are the rules we are playing with), and Pitino himself could use this offseason to reset a bit since his singular focus is ensuring a season like this never happens again.
Lou was smart enough to retire before embarrassing himself and the school speaking to the press after a game. The closest I came to him was reading his post-game comments in the paper, and few coaches were as adept at it as him. Although, I did see him being dropped off in front of the Gym the morning after the 30 point loss to Georgetown in a packed MSG in 1982. He looked like he saw a ghost.

I know he was as passionate as any coach here, but I always felt that he had the humility to keep any negative thoughts about the school and players in the proper perspective and place.

It cannot be stated enough, but we are feeling like he basketball sky is falling because we are going currently through it.

Is Pitino’s post game presser more embarrassing than Pittsburgh? That was an embarrassment to the entire university. People were not wearing university apparel out of disgust.
Of course Pittsburgh was worse, but we only 3 or 4 years off an NCAA Tournament win at that time, so patience was more in order, at least for me.

2 decades later, and still no NCAA wins (and no threat to move into the second weekend, other than Lavin's first year, until DJ got hurt), and my tolerance for stuff like we saw yesterday is much less.

Look, Pitino is pissed off because despite this teams deficiencies, if they we willing to do the things that need to be done to win that you don’t need talent to do we would have three or four more wins. I’m talking about getting back on defense in the open court and grinding out every defensive possession in the half court etc. These players are just not willing to give that type of effort for whatever reason and it’s killing Pitino. I share in his anger and frustration and agree with him. He’s not wrong in what he’s saying he should just know enough to be more diplomatic in the way he says it.
What’s killing Pitino is he thought a return to the big east would be easy. He thought what worked for him 10 years ago would still work now. He thought that his name would be enough to win games.

He didn’t point in the effort and all the other Big East coaches are running laps around him. He’s lost the players, which were his hand picked group. Now he tried to publicly embarrass them and ends up just embarrassing himself and the school.

And before we get all a) his facilities are bad b) it’s a commuter school c) nobody could win with like this.

Rick is benefiting from a top four salary in league, a reported 2.5 to 3.1 million dollar NIL war chest and a multi-billion dollar benefactor that just wants to see his school win an NCAA game so bad he’s handed out several blank checks.

Somehow without any of this Providence and Seton Hall take us to the woodshed year after year. Oh and by the way their facilities are Alumni Hall and the Walsh Gym. Spaces so small and old that the Big East won’t let them play their home games there.

And it's not even close to Hiroshima. Well, maybe a little.

I don't have a problem with his post game pressers and actually enjoy his insight and honesty. Sometimes guys (e.g. Cureblo) need to be called out to get their attention. I think he could have made his point re: lateral quickness without calling out individuals and suspect or hope he would change his response if given a 2nd chance.

The most egregious comment is the one where he says that that this is his least enjoyable coaching experience. I find that this one is beyond over the top, unnecessary and hurtful - with zero upside.

With kids getting paid big $s, they will have to get accustomed to criticism and booing (and deservedly so). But these kids all talked up their love for his coaching - especially Soriano. Not sure if anyone else noticed it, but at one point Soriano was yanked for making a mistake and when he approached the bench, he touched Pitino’s arm as if to say “I’m sorry”. Maybe my misinterpretation. But at the point I really felt like Joel was sorry that he had let RP down and I felt badly for him.

If I can try and find some silver lining here. St. John's has been in the headlines this year more times than I can remember since I've been a fan. Each of the rants that Pitino has gone on during the past few weeks, has had their own headline on ESPN. Sure, it's not great subject matter, but in the 24 hours news cycle, people will quickly forget. And all that will matter is St. John's has relevance of some sort again. Just consider it foundational work for what's to come.

Sure, I'm embarrassed too, and I'd love to have the headlines come from better circumstances. And I really hope Pitino is able to look in the mirror and clean things up. Hoping for the best.

Respectfully I don't want to be in the press for being a joke though.

In the span of a month we went from a darling to an embarrassment.

Trust me, I get it, and I'm not encouraging this type of behavior. Just trying to add some (maybe overly optimistic) context. One thing I know, winning will cure everything.

“Do we have shitty facilities? Yes, we do. But, we’re doing something about that.”

Thanks Rick. Would love to hear your thoughts on Holloway's facilities at St Peter's when he took them to the Elite 8.

Wow a season that is being played by mid majors for a coach that had zero time to recruit. You guys are well umph.... Majority of our loses came from ranked teams that WE almost one. Give Pitino a chance, he never said it was going to be easy and said months ago this is not a great team. Lets be realistic folks.

Let's be realistic Moose.
We were darlings because of the Rick Pitino hype. But, in reality, any honest fan will say we are an embarrassment because of HOW WE LOST some games in February.
We were ahead or tied in the last 5 minutes of the last few losses. The lack of execution has been a big problem in that stretch both defensively and offensively.
Yesterday was the last straw for Rick Pitino. Watching the same players make the same mistakes over and over and poor offensive sets in the closing minutes is frustrating him.
Dingle......missed 3 point attempt
Ledlum .......miss lay-up on a drive
Soriano......invisible
Luis........turnover and a foul
Alleyne......missed jumper

Etc, etc.

When I spoke with my wife after the game I said "record the post game press conference ". I knew Pitino was going to go nuclear. The boos in the arena were not being directed at Pitino my friend. They were directed at players that were allowing the opposition to roll over them with aggressive play.
