Embarrassing

Does anyone else think this season was an embarrassment to the university? I am a huge Pitino fan and support him being hired even with coach Anderson contesting his own contract and payment.

With coach Pitino my expectations were raised immediately and most here probably thought the same thing. I truly thought some good basketball players were brought here and the results would be different. Boy was i wrong.

I want to believe in coach, but what will be different next season? If players aren’t getting along now as previous messages indicate then how will the team get along next year? How does coach not replicate the same issues when hitting the portal regardless who leaves or comes back? My optimism has turned to pessimism.

Pitino needs athletes to get easy points for this whole thing to work.

Load up on athletic guards and everything will look completely different.

I think he will be very dangerous learning from these lessons.

I agree....and that team will be even better if he learns an important leadership lesson: demonstrate accountability
and poise under pressure and your players will do the same. Humiliate them individually and collectively publicly and your ROI likely will be negative.

Get athletes and there won’t be any need for accountability either 😂

Easy points and easy press conferences.

Well, I think the rumors about the players who don't get along (if true) are about the guys who are leaving anyway, after this year. That's what I gathered from that.

Told myself if we lose today would look forward to recruiting the portal and next season. This game so sickened me I am no longer excited about who we may get because winners won’t want to come here only mercenaries after a payday.
Let's get real bamafan, how many kids at this level want to go anywhere for any reason at all except for a payday? With rare exceptions, it most certainly ain't "school pride" or wanting to get a degree from a certain school.

It's a sad state of affairs and you know who the biggest losers are? The fans that are being asked to fork over their hard earned money for this NIL bullshit. But hey, if you got money to burn, go on and keep pissing it away on these kids, just STFU and don't tell me do it.

Monte,
Let’s be real all of us do what we do (or in the case of a retiree like me did) for a payday. That is what capitalism is all about and nothing to be ashamed of.
I do think we tend to paint these college basketball players with too broad of a brush. Sure they are going to the highest bidder but many of them are good kids who also take advantage of their degree in a life after bball and would be crazy not to maximize their earnings.

I still enjoy watching college hoops as long as it’s around and really have no problem with these kids getting a decent piece of the pie. Agree there needs to be some boundaries put in place but it’s not up to the athletes to do it.

I sat next to the Aunt and Uncle of one of the players tonight. Lovely people. Their Nephew played hard but it was a very frustrating game. Unfortunately nothing that happened surprised me. You can't put this all on one player but the guy Marillac talks about incessantly is our biggest problem. You can't win with him at that position. Just look at the free throw disparity.

Agree NCJ, but we didn't ask for donations to pay our salary. IMO this system doesn't need some tweaking, IMO it's a completely flawed. It's a farce. We used to root for kids who were invested in our school. They were one of us. Now, as Bamafan referred to them, they are paid mercenaries.
.
I gradually lost interest in pro sports, and no longer follow any pro sports except for football, and that's only because I like to place small wagers on the games. I am gradually loosing interest in college sports. I rarely bother to watch any college basketball team but SJU, and am slowly loosing interest in SJU basketball as well.

It has less to do with 20+ years of SJU futility, although that doesn't help, and a lot to do with the current state of college sports.

Let’s face it, if we would have ran this season back with Anderson and last years team plus Yaxel , Gardner and whoever else we might have portaled in , we would have had a much better season. It’s embarrassing to admit but it’s true. What a complete and utter F’ing dumpster fire this program has become. I blame to players for not at least giving defensive effort for 40 minutes a game which takes nothing but grit and determination. But, I blame Pitino also for the way he’s handled this. You realize you screwed up and brought in the wrong type of players, just take the high road , ride it out and bring in the players you need next year. Instead Pitino has just exacerbated the dysfunction of this team with his statements.

I guess the way I look at it Monte is the players didn’t create NIL and they are not asking for donations to pay for it, their employer is, much like companies essentially ask for stockholders to pay their company’s employee salaries.
As long as the game stays the same, I’ll enjoy watching it but understand not everyone feels that way.

The players did not create the new system, but they are part of it and they most certainly are benefiting from it. Good for them. But let's be real, both higher education and D1 college sports, especially basketball and football, are multi-billion dollar industries. No reason anyone should be having to donate to a multi-billion dollar industry.

Like any other industry, if it can't sustain itself then either it changes how it does business or it goes out of business. But again, it's your money and if you choose to donate to a multi-billion dollar business, it's your right to do so. No matter how much I think it's ridiculous 😉

This!

Take the money we already pay to enjoy the product and share it with the talent that makes it possible.

Monte, not sure we disagree that much unless by donating you mean going to games which I will continue to do because the enjoyment I get is worth the price of admission to me. NIL is something else entirely and while I don't resent the athletes getting it, other than an occasional t-shirt or event if I am in the area, it won't come from me.
Only other thing I'll say is no industry is a multi-billion dollar one unless someone is making it so by paying/donating lots of dollars in one way or the other. That's capitalism at work and while not perfect I don't care for the alternative.

But they are not getting “a piece of the pie”, that Is staying where it always was, NCAA, schools, coaches, etc.
Players NIL is coming from fan “donations”, the difference from the old “bag o’ money” being that it has moved from below to above table so now the “average Joe” fan can join the mega donors to fork over even more than the attendance, parking, concessions, etc. to just enjoy the games to “help” pay for these guys “salaries”. Another sweet con by the NCAA and schools to rival the old “student athlete” soft shoe.
Let’s face it, between NIL and free agency, and AAU and the “me” generation the game many of us grew up loving is pretty much gone. After, to quote Looie, they “put the balls away”, we will have a month or so wondering who is going and who is coming, and that is almost as depressing as being a Johnnie’s fan and watching the last 24 minutes of their games.
One last comment, when I got done with college, I spent about a dozen years chasing and working to become a “Rick Pitino” level hoop coach, even though I abandoned the dream a year before he got the Providence job. But after reading the quotes from his press conferences, I am glad the way things turned out because I would hate to think I could have turned out to be such an a$$hole. Unless the quotes are somehow taken out of context, that’s not honesty or openness or frankness, that’s just being completely classless without starting with critiquing the poor job he has done himself. And if he had the integrity and balls to do that, having the wisdom to stop then, that’s what REAL leaders do. Maybe that’s what he once was, but that’s certainly not what he is now.

The players all angled for more money and sell themselves to the highest bidder.
He is telling the truth about effort and their athletic abilities. These are hired guns. Who will not run back on defense. He should call them out. They’re not college students they’re basketball mercenaries.
I do not think doing it publicly is helpful but he is being honest.

I missed your point. I thought you were talking specifically about the NIL. Sorry bout' that.

I too will continue to attend games, purchase merchandise, etc. After that it's up to the powers that be to figure out how to divy up the billions.
