A very good choice to interview. The guy has been everywhere. He's been in the pros, college HC, assistant under Louie, Valvano, Wnba. Just about everywhere.

Interesting...because he is a recruiter...I think he dragged Louie out to see David Russell

Nothing wrong with having recruiting ability as well. Interestingly enough, Abatemarco seems to be a candidate that bridges the interests of the people who want a "recruiter" and those that want an X's and O's guy. Seems Abatemarco can provide quite a bit to the national recruiting dynamic quite a bit, yet be relied on for X's and O's as well.

Abatemarco also discovered Spud Webb and landed him at NC State.

Nice article on Abatemarco. Still recruits and says he's one of the most connected guys in all of basketball. He has NYC roots and 30 years of experience. Another really great candidate. Sounds like he's really been under appreciated at Colorado and would jump at a chance for SJU. He had tons of high profile offers. Pretty funny that Wake Forest told him he "wasn't welcome" at Wake when Bzedlik went there due to the fact that he was assistant under Valvano. Talk about a grudge.

Agree. He seems like an excellent candidate, and having been a broadcaster for the Kings.. you know he has a personality too, and is probably well spoken. I'm a little surprised because he seems like more of a recruiter than a sidelines or practice coach... although clearly he can and has done both. But I trust Lavin on this, and Abatemarco brings a lot to the table. Interesting, if this indeed ends up being Lavin's choice.

Everything I've read about him seems to imply that he certainly is a sidelines/practice coach. From all accounts, he was just better as an assistant than a head coach from some commentary I read. I dont think it had anything to do with him not being good. He was heavily sought after by a lot of big time head coaches as an assistant. He was successful in the WNBA where you really DO have to be able to coach. Guys like Blaney and Willard were never über successful in D1, yet are heavily relied in as assistants.

It seems his forte is really his experience at all levels of basketball. He apparently is a wiz at talent evaluation and recruiting. I don't know enough about his coaching ability, but I know enough to say that none of us new much about Dunlap either. Dunlap never had any real successes in D1 ball. Interesting candidate for sure. He sure wouldn't hurt with all his far reaching connections, recruiting ability and coaching experience.

Trying to figure where the Lavin connection is - Steve usually goes after guys he knows personally. I'm sure Carnaseca was approached for input before the feelers went out. Abatemarco WAS head coach at Sacramento State while Steve was at UCLA, so they likely crossed paths during those years.

Read a tweet that Mo Hicks going to the Bobcats.

Interesting.. so maybe we're looking to bring in 2 people. Any chance Lavin could be going after Abatemarco as DOBO ? It seems like a step down, but in some ways it makes sense ... from what we've heard his best attribute is his roladex and his connections in the basketball world. That's kind of what you're looking for in a dir of basketball operations no? But can our DOBO really be a better paying gig than pac12 assistant coach?

Possible I guess.

How did Steve know Dunlap again CR? I know they say they've known each other for 20 years or more, but what was the connection there?

Mike was head coach at D-3 Cal Lutheran University during the time Steve was assistant at UCLA and they definately knew each other from that - but the real connection (I believe) comes from both men's close connection to Pete Newell. Pretty sure they both worked Newell camps. And I'm also pretty sure that Mike guested at the Lavin Basketball Camps in the Bay area. The Lavin family camps were extremely successful in developing young talent (middle school) for literally decades - His dad started them in (I believe) the 60's, and Steve worked them his whole life growing up until his head coaching gig. That's why Cap Lavin is still a bigger name in northern California than is Steve :) And of course, Cap played for Pete Newell - so there's another link in the chain. A lot of Steve's recruiting strength in Northern California is due to the fathers and uncles (in some cases even grandfathers) of todays recruits who were "Lavin kids" when they were young.

One of the things Bruin fans never seemed to understand is the level of skill at social networking that Steve Lavin possesses - from a time before they even CALLED it social networking. What they'd see as time spent "goofing off" instead of coaching, I saw as stockpiling ammo for future assaults - like having a Dunlap card in his deck to pull out a decade and a half later....Hang out with a D-3 Head coach when you're already a UCLA Assistant? How was that NOT a waste of time? :)

I personally would think that Dunlap would want more of a seasoned coaching staff... With all due respect to Mo, being a HS coach and a DOBO in college doesn't seem to fit. Pretty much anyone else on the current staff would make moe sense than Mo

Remember a former Hicks pupil is in Charlotte as well.

True, and if you told me a few Weeks ago that Dunlap would be HC for the bobcats i probably would've said no way...so i guess anything could happen....i just couldn't find a peep about it on twitter

This is the tweet in question. Looks like an STJ student

Maybe it's not a coaching job... Moe could probably fill a couple different front office positions... basketball ops for one, scouting?, player or personnel director? NBA teams have a million different titles, and I don't know what half of them actually do.

No problem if Moe leaves, and it opens a spot for Morton to take the DOBO job. I thought he wanted the Associate HC job, but as DOBO, tiny would be just fine.  I had an issue with tiny lobbying for the AHC spot, but at DOBO i thk it's just good local PR. As far as Hicks goes, it is GREAT PR for SJU if local guys like Hicks are getting NBA jobs.

If Hicks does leave, I am sure it has a lot to do with Lavin and Dunlap's relationship. It really cements SJU's spot in the NYC basketball community by sending local coaches on. Local AAU and HS guys will love us as is already evident with Morton swooning. I'm not sure most people realize how powerful a message it sends, but I'm certain Lavin knows every bit how powerful it makes him in NYC circles as well as nationally to send Dunlap and Hicks to the league. I can't help but admire the work that Lavin does etching his way into this spot at SJU. Truly artful.

CRgreen. One article mentioned that Lavin knows Abatemarco from Sacramento State which is a question you had asked.
