Dominic Pointer

I loved Willy Glass but at this stage Sir Dom is a much better player.
Fortunately, I believe he has just started to scratch at his potential.

I'm with you, redmannorth. Really liked (though never loved) Willie Glass, but I think when his time at St. John's is over, Dom will have shown himself to be a very special player.

Redken, Glass was very good a good defender and could attack the glass like few could.

Let’s not sell Willie Glass short. He had no outside game, but his inside game was superb. He was a monster on his “moniker” the Glass. And a player who hustled every play.

Now only if Willie had an outside shot and a handle, .....maybe Carmelo Anthony reincarnate, without the thick body.

I was reading Marcus' back and forth with the UConn guys and it brought me back to something. Folks don't give Dom enough credit nor understand his full potential. The kid is a beast who can do it all and is the team's best defender. I think it's going to be pretty hard to get him out of the starting lineup.

I will also reiterate a previously held contention of mine that he's got the same potential that Victor Oladipo did coming out of his Sophomore year. Look at the stats:

Dom: 26.9 mins, 6.9 pts, 5.5 rb, 2.5 asst, 1.4 stl, 1.8 TO, 51%/33%/66%, 9 made 3's, 1.4 PPS
Oladipo: 26.7 mins, 10.7 pts, 5.3 rbs, 2.0 assts, 1.4 stl, 2.1 TO, 47%/21%/75%, 10 made 3's, 1.35 PPS

Same size, similar frame, both hard workers and very coachable. I'd say Dom is a slightly better athlete. One difference is Dom was much higher rated out of HS. But Oladipo took a big leap between Soph and Jr years. Dom has the potential for the same. Tighten up his handle (dribble a ball everywhere this summer young man) and his FT shooting and he has all the potential in the world.

It is very close statistically. Dom's is the better athlete--which is crazy to say for anyone compared to Oladipo--but Oladipo has a much better handle. If Dom increases his skill level, he'll be a monster.

Disagree. Think Oli is the better athlete. Dom may be a slightly better leaper and his athletic numbers may be better but when Oli makes athletic drives to the basket he is much more able to maintain body control and that is an impt aspect of athletism. dom is like a young wild colt while Oli is the experienced thoroughbred. Maybe as Dom develops he can get there.

I agree completely.

Good point, but how much of that is skill and experience? Most young kids think they can drop their heads and bully their way into the lane like they did in high school. It takes a lot of skill and experience to jump stop and/or avoid defenders looking for the charge.

Personally, I never liked Willie Glass. Yes, he was a pretty decent rebounder and always gave effort. But he had a zero handle, couldn't shoot at all, couldn't pass, and was horrible from the free throw line. I thought his inclusion as a regular player cost us the National Championship (that and Coach Lou's insistence on playing Ron Stewart as the first forward off the bench). His compromised size was never more glaring than in those games against Georgetown, where he was hardly a factor. The Hoya press was absolutely daunting for him. Shelton Jones, who had far more skills, and would have weighed a huge difference on the boards as well as ball handling, should have been starting from day one. Coach Lou's failure to use that asset in my opinion coast us the NCAA Championship. Not coincidental that Glass' name is mentioned alongside Amir Garret...in my mind, a similar player. Too small for the Big East, no pass, no handle, one dimensional, predictable, and a poor free throw shooter to boot.
Sir Dom, on the other hand, will be the real deal before he departs. His apparent initiative to improve will no doubt be the difference. I've never been a fan of his ball release, but he showed marked improvement last year. We are lucky to have him and he will be a fabulous senior.

We won't have to wait till he's a senior, Dom will be a very good player as a junior.
I disagree with those who think he'll be the first man off the bench next season. I think he's a lock as a starter, and very well could be our best player.

Don't bogart that joint my friend ...... Pass it over to me!

True, and hopefully Dom will work on that this summer. I was perusing some season preview articles to see what folks were saying about Oladipo coming in to the season.

ESPN/Grantland called him a Big Ten all-defensive team selection who can get to the rim and bring the house down with earth-moving dunks.

CBS Sports simply called him an athetic freak wild card.

My point is no one saw Oladipo as a superstar coming into the season, he was just a guy who did all the things Dom did as a Soph except for being a far poorer shooter.

I'm not saying Dom will definitely make the same jump but I'm saying that to think he can't is to have not watched him the last two years and seen that he obviously has the potential to do so. He and Obekpa are the two guys who have the potential to make great leaps from one season to the next.

I can't explain it but I've always been optimistic about Pointer. I just see him continuing to improve, and I already think he does a lot well now, so it's not that far fetched to think he could be among the best in the conference.

I'm probably critical of enough parts of the team that drinking the koolaid on Dom brings some balance to my life

Dom went from my least favorite to favorite based upon his attitude and developing maturity. Although a work in progress, his decision making developed 100x and you can see he developed a conscious role for himself rather than trying to do everything as he did earlier. If he continues to mature at the same rate and keeps up the lunchpail mentality and his emotions in check, he'll be a key to our success. Some more body control and handle on offense and of course FT shooting.

I only disagree with the part that he could be our best player. He is nowhere near Karr yet and it remains to be seen if Orlando, being the best player in practices, brings it during games.

There are things Dom does better than Jakarr but scoring is not one of them and on this team with its offensive deficiencies last year Karr's scoring was vital. Will that be the case in 13/14? Time will tell.

Never gave much thought to the pro potential of Pointer, but I recently saw him listed as the last pick in someone's 2015 mock NBA draft. Given his incredible defense and athletic ability, maybe he can be in the league. It looks like he can almost defend at the NBA level already, and he also looks taller than he did as a freshman. What say you?
