Dominic Pointer

Dom's got the best all-arouind game on the squad.

You are kidding, right?
I love the kid and I think he'll be awesome the next two years, but he does not have a handle and he cannot shoot the ball well.

Check out his stats from last year and find somebody else who's scoring, rebounding and apg compare, and then factor in his defesive toughness. That's why he's the best all-around player.

His handle and shot improved as the season wore on and they'll probably continue to improve for the next two next years.

His role in the half court offense was pretty much to stay out of the way and get the ball to Harrison. If you just look at stats they aren't going to tell you the whole story. Yes, Dom was much more efficient than last year, but that is becuase he was aware--just like anyone that has ever seen him dribble the ball more than three times--of his obvious limitations. We are in trouble if we have to rely on Pointer to create offense for us.

Harrison, Branch, and Sampson are all more well-rounded. Does that alone make them better? No.

more well-rounded maybe and I agree about stats but I think it works the other way too. That being the team plays better with Dom on the floor and that doesn't necessarily show in the stats.

I would agre to that. I want Dom on the floor at all times...kind of how I felt about Pari Horne his senior year. Horne also had gaping holes in his game, but he made everyone around him better and whenever he was on the court there seemed to be so many more steals, deflections, loose balls, and fast breaks. Not all of that stuff shows up in the stats.

He has next level talent

He has next level athleticism. If by talent you mean next level skill, not true. What would his position be? Can't shoot good enough to be a 2, and not big/strong enough to be a 3. If a NBA team can afford to have an energy guy with limited offense that can guard big and quick 2's, then yes.

I love Dom. Love his toughness and determination. He makes plays that many others on our team can't and I really think his most understated skill is his finishing, he's probably the best on the team around the rim.

With that said, when I think about our best lineups this year I'm often leaving Dom out of it. I really think that by BE play our best lineup will have Branch, Dlo, and Rysheed on the court at the same time.

I have written about this before in other posts . Like I said already sir Dom has 2 years left if he works on his jump shot there's no doubt he can play at the next level. Dom is a lock down defender scouts love that , athletic ability is obvious. Think of Dom as a tony Allen , both. 6'5-6'6 both can't shoot but both play great defense. Lucky for Dom he has 2 years to be putting up 3,000 jump shots a day.

It's funny you write that, because my favorite lineup going into the season is probably the only one that leaves Dom out. It is Jordan-Branch-Harrison-Sampson-Sanchez. I would definitely be interested to see how Dom would play in that lineup as a substitute for Sampson or Sanchez. The defensive pressure would have to be extremely heavy, because I don't love a backline of Harrison, Dom, and Sampson/Sanchez in a 2-3 for too long in the half court...but damn would that be some kind of press. Trap half court, trap baseline, everytime.

By next level does not only mean NBA Think this yr will tell if he has improved his shooting and handle He is then suited for a guard or giving a small forward a break at the next level . Feel he has much more to offer IF he was on a team that had 1/2 our talent he would be a go to guy and his stats would jump . I am going to stand by him this yr because I think he could be very good

If Dom were to make the NBA, hlis position would certainly be a slightly undersized three. He'll never possess the scoring ability necessary to play the two in the NBA. He will be able to defend the two, though, as well as the three.

+1 on all points in this thread. Think Dom makes almost every lineup permutation he's in better because of his versatility and unselfishness, but it's very possible our best lineup is the one you guys mention. Think Jordan, Harrison, Sampson, and Sanchez for sure, with it being between Branch and Dom for the last spot. Would also be interested to see what that Branch/Harrison/Jordan/Pointer/Sampson lineup would do in short spurts. Light on size but overwhelming quickness. Maybe even with Obekpa anchoring the middle instead, and everyone else applying max pressure. Great to finally have depth and options.

I think Dom is like DJ Kennedy. And we saw how we played after DJ was injured. He is the glue guy.

College basketball preseason: 10 'glue guys' to watch

Sir'Dominic Pointer, G/F, St. John's (Jr., 6-5, 196): A freak athlete who can play multiple positions, Pointer is referred to by Red Storm coach Steve Lavin as "Costco." Why? Because he gives you a little bit of everything. The 6-5 wing may be the key to St. John's reaching the NCAA Tournament for the second time in Lavin's tenure. When Pointer produces, the Red Storm are awfully tough to beat.

I keep thinking that the most improved player for SJU will be Obekpa and that Obekpa. Sanchez, Sampson, Jordan, Harrison will crush opposition spirit at which time the smaller quicker subs take turns stripping the carcass.

Don't expect to see the three bigs in there together often.

How can you not like Pointer. He plays hard, is a good sportsmen and is always smiling. I would take ten of him on any team.
