Dominic Pointer

Really seems to be coming into his own. Hopefully he keeps it up, exactly what this team needs from him.

I watched the Lavin interview after the game. He was gushing about Dom and rightly so. He had an outstanding game and he referred to Dom as the glue of the team. Although, he was close, coach was a little off about Dom almost having a "quadruple double". But its good to see Sir Dom having good games. Going with 3 guards and Dom and Karr has been good chemistry and a winning formula, at least so far. I hope they keep it up. Certainly the SHU game is winnable. Go Redmen!

I do not think it has anything to do with level of competition. He is on a 4-5 game tear right now against BE talent. 13 points, 9 rebounds, 7 assisits and 6 steals? If it was that easy, Sampson and others would have the same lines.

He does it all. And is starting to hit a few jumpers. Super excited about his play. He makes us a much more well roudned, dangerous team.

I've taken some negative hits to my karma over the years, but think I deserve some positive karma points for starting this thread when everyone was lambasting the team following the grown game.

Btw -- interesting interview with lavin after the game. Lavin made a crack about being on the hot seat with some of the alumni after losing a few in a row. Wonder whether he reads this board.

People on staff and admin know of the site. Do they check it everyday? No. But they know its existence and I'm sure give it a gander once in awhile.

Certainly hope the players don't read this thread- Ha...with some of the comments that have been said, if a kid doesn't have thick skin, their confidence would be shot. That's why i am a big proponent of "constructive" criticism.

Put yourself in their shoes.

Would you google yourself?

Why not? They have nothing to be ashamed of. Some of the posters on this board and their sophomoric comments when the team struggles...well, that's another story.

On top of all the box score numbers, Dom drew about six charges last night, kid had an incredible game.

Celestand described Poole as a blue collar player who brings his lunch pail to every game. Heck, Dom drives a food truck to every game!

You know I was texting one of the other members here during the game when he drew one of those charges and I think it was my favorite play of the game from him.

Love when I see our guys draw charges

ok +1 to the karma from mjmaherjr

I love his hustle and I am really hoping he turned a corner, but I'd like to see how he fairs against some better competition. Rutgers, SH, and Depaul type teams are not the best baramoter. Those team aren't cupcakes, but they are teams STJ should beat every game.

Hustle, defense, drawing charges........like Matty Brust....another of my favorite Redmen.

Can’t beat the combo of all-out-effort, will, desire plus he had a bunch of assists and played great D.

Great game. Payback was sweet.

By the way, for those who have met him, they can attest to the fact that he is a real nice kid.
When I took my kids to the Depaul game in CA last season, they were allowed to hang out in the trainer's room and in Taffner for the afternoon prior to the game. Dom was great with the boys and played my older son one on one for an hour.
It is a real nice group of kids that we are fortunate to have.

Where did I say they wouldnt. Of course they would. Thats my point.

Forget stepping into their shoes... I google myself now. :)

Steveo is right. This has nothing to do with the level of competition.
Dom wasn't playing this well when we were playing Holy Cross and NJIT. Now he's doing it against BE talent.
Give props where props are due.
I'm the first to criticize when we play poorly. And there's still a lot f work that needs to go into our half court offense.
But Dom has stepped up his game when we've needed it most.
He's been our most consistent player since conference play started.

An odd stat

Over his last 9 games, 29-40 shooting .725

Sorry Stevo, but I believe you're off....Only 28-40...even 70%... :)

That's an unbelievable stat. And a testament to his great shot selection. Some posters have criticized him for his poor decisions. He's made some mental mistakes no doubt. All the kids have. But by and large, when the game is on the line, I'm comfortable with him getting touches and with what he does when he gets those touches. I may be overly optimistic here, but IMO the kid has the chance to be an impact player for us as a Junior and Senior. Especially if he can develop a decent outside shot.

Dom Pointer reminds me somewhat of Willie Glass. Willie was an explosive athlete!

No doubt... Willie is one of my favorite all-time johnnies because he did all the "little things" to help his team win... much the same way Sir Dom does!

"Dom Pointer's line tonight is one of the more unusual, exceptional lines of any player I've coached in my career," said head coach Steve Lavin. "Sometimes, I've had kids that dropped 36 (points), or have 18 rebounds, or have nine blocks... He was moving to a quadruple-double. That's very unusual... he's the straw that stirs the drink, or the energizer for our team. He has been the difference here in the last couple of weeks for St. John's."

As shaky as Dom's jumper can be at times, he's way better than Willie. But Willie and Dom do share a lot of those hard-nosed traits. I think Willie was more comfortable guarding down low while Dom tends to be outside disrupting things. Willie did the dirty work allowing Walter and Chris some leeway, while Dom's the same with this team.

Nice comparo Rcatalano.

Thank you Mr. Jones for finding the quote.
I was shocked when I saw Sir Dom's stats.
