@DePaul, Wed. Feb. 14, 9pm, CBS SN / Sirius & TuneIn (STREAM)

I thought Gillen was way too repetitive . If I heard Brooklyn and Jefferson HS one more time , I was going to scream . That, plus , Cardinal Hayes and Iona Prep , who could figure out what he was talking about in seeding for HS playoffs . I liked Lappas better.

They could have taped Gillen's comments from the first five minutes and just put them on a loop, he is the worst color guy I've heard this year, not only is he repetitive but his voice is grating.,:p
he sounds like Jimmy Durante or something

It was the Shamorie Ponds show again, but he doesn't have a chance to shine at the end unless Clark brings us back late in the 2nd half, he's the player of the game for me.

Listening to Pete Gillen was like sitting next to an old alum at a game in CA. Didn't care that he repeated himself, as long as he wasn't rooting for DePaul. He's an old Brooklyn guy who obviously has a fondness for the program.

I'd change seats.:)

The turning point, IMO, was the charge Owens drew on Strus with about 4 minutes left (I think we got the benefit of a bad call there).

We were down 4, then about a minute later (still down 4), Clark his two free throws, then Depaul has that miscommunication on the inbounds play, and Ponds makes them answer with a big three pointer to put us ahead.

BTW, good job by Ahmed to let that ball go out. I was killing him for not going after it, but of course, the TV can't show you that there was nobody else in the back court to get that ball, so he had everything to lose potentially, if he did touch it.

Anybody notice we caught a nice break from the refs. Shamorie drove right baseline, jumped and kicked it to the other side for a corner 3 from Justin. It looked like he stepped out before making the pass. The cheerleader tried to bring attention to it too. That broke a 56 all tie. Check 3:13 on the clip

With 6:45 or so left in the game, Gillen said, "St. John's by one," for the final score. Behold, The Profit from Brooklyn.

Looked at the replay (14:15 2nd half), Simon was out, but stepped back in before ball left Ponds' hands. Then put up the 3.

just for the record I prefer my lobster rolls Connecticut style with melted butter. I eat Maine style when they don’t have ct style

Say three Hail Marys and ten Our Fathers. Now go in peas my son and season no more.

Yeah, I heard him say that once , before he went back to Shamorie Ponds from Thomas Jefferson HS in Brooklyn for the 1000 time ! That and his constant reference to Cardinal Hayes and Iona Prep for HS B.B. Playoffs . Gillen was a good Coach , not a great one . What I remember him most for was he sweated profusely during games and his shirt , Suit and tie were drenched . Guys who knew him from Brooklyn said he was a good guy . He needs work in the Broadcasting booth though . Just too repetitive .

Gritty win. Ponds is looking like a legit nba player sorry to say. I know his defense but the nba doesn't do defense anymore from what I can see; that's why it's so boring and I prefer college ball. I'm praying he stays but if he has a chance to get paid what can you do. I might be in the minority but I think we can still have a good team next year regardless. Anyway I'm just enjoying the moment and I'm happy this season is relevant again. Would be amazing to make the dance this year.

Agreed Dan, but I still think he stays one more year. He’s not on any of the first round draft boards that I’ve seen. There are a lot of good guards coming out this year who have NBA size in addition to skills. Chandler Hutchinson at Boise St is one that comes to mind. There are also a few European kids I saw on the board. Not diminishing what Ponds has done, he’s been amazing! I just think it behooves him to stay one more year. He has to play PG in the NBA , he has to show that he can efficiently run a team and distribute the ball consistently in an efficient and effective manner. Last night I believe he had 10 assists so he’s beginning to show this now which is why I agreed with your point. But, based on how the draft is shaping up , I think he stays.

NBADraft.net just updated their mock draft and even after this great run, Ponds is not listed in the first or second round for this year. They still have him 2nd round next year. They're usually pretty accurate. Of course things could change.

Us not being able to rebound puzzles me we have some HT 6-11 owens 6-7 amend and between them they can not get an offensive rebound What gives with that, Unless they just do not like to fight and get tough
Owens is our only tall guy and we have a 6 man rotation. Ahmed is really like 6'5". We have been a weak rebounding team since game 1; I don't know why it keeps being brought up over and over again. We can win despite being outrebounded because we force turnovers. Enjoy the good times man you never know how long it will last.

Agree with you Dan. Actually we held our own in our previous 3 wins on the boards. Depaul beating us on the boards was no surprise. They their front line pushed us around. We did a better Job in second half. Glad we pulled this one out. Gutsy

Just a couple of comments Dr. Fun (1) It was not a "late start" as you misinformed Mrs. Fun as it was an 8 pm game. Chicago is one hour behind Albany. (2) Pete Gillen was one of the greatest coaches in Xavier history and in his 9 years went to the NCAA Tournament 7 times. He took Providence to the Elite 8 in 1997. His time at Virginia was average because UVA actually used admissions protocols in his time there. They, like Duke and Carolina, now are a little more liberal when it comes to being competitive to get recruits.
Nice of you to be reminiscent about Lent and your family. Your dad was a great man.

Agreed about the puzzling aspect or rebounding. More often than not they are out of position or looking to block a shot and land out of position. They need to be more disciplined around the basket...Rebounding is a desire and instinct. As you've noticed, Ponds has an innate instinct for where to be at the right times.

When I coached a high school team one of my rebounding drills was to have the team line up facing the basket while I shot from outside. The idea, of course , was to have them fight for position and box out. The losing side ran laps around the court at the end of practice.

You're hired! What are you doing July and August?;)
