@DePaul, Wed. Feb. 14, 9pm, CBS SN / Sirius & TuneIn (STREAM)

Gutty W. Happy for the guys. We knew Depaul's size would cause us trouble and it did.

I thoroughly enjoyed beating Eli Cain and watching him cool down in the second half. He annoys me.

The one thing that continues to bother me is Owens switching on defense, winding up guarding the guard outside while his man rolls to the basket. This most of the time leaves one of our guards picking up a foul.

I haven't read any other post but I'll bet most complained about not fouling with a three point lead. After a timeout Gillen was emphatic there should be an early Johnnie foul, mentioning his prior success at Xavier and Virginia. It's been obvious that this is not Mullins strategy. I'm still on the fence.

Can't ask any thing more from Ponds and Clark. Outstanding performances.

Glad to see Clark or Ponds getting the out of bounds pass at the end.

Onto Marquette!

Good win on the road. Considering DePaul had the lead for a total of 30 minutes in this game and we got pulverized on the boards (kind of expected that) they found a way. Clark was sensational in the second half and Ponds closed it out. That charge Owens took was huge and could of went either way Mr. Driscoll owed us one!! :D

Believe it or not but I really thought Driscoll called an excellent game tonight. Surprised you might say.

Gritty win. Ponds is looking like a legit nba player sorry to say. I know his defense but the nba doesn't do defense anymore from what I can see; that's why it's so boring and I prefer college ball. I'm praying he stays but if he has a chance to get paid what can you do. I might be in the minority but I think we can still have a good team next year regardless. Anyway I'm just enjoying the moment and I'm happy this season is relevant again. Would be amazing to make the dance this year.
Agree pro ball and it's seeping down to college is all about the 3 it's becoming just a shooting contest. Example: the post game show after the Providence win over Nova the two commentators were saying Nova outscored Prov in the paint by 24 points but that Prov defense was willing to give up 2s and keep Nova from hurting them from 3 point land. This is also why I don't understand why defenders still slough off on interior players to help out and leave lethal 3 point shooters open. Lou loved and always played a sloughing man to man and packed it in down low but with the 3 point shot nowadays players need to just stay out on the good shooters.

He called the BS foul on ponds in the Georgetown game (MSG) when the Hoya went over his back. So I think he owed us one. Lol

What a game that I didn’t see! TV down all day and then went out, but checked score continuously through 2nd half! I’ll happily take 1-point wins rest of the season! DePaul better than their record and knew we had matchup problems. Great win.
Let’s go Johnnies.

It's time for me to fess. SJU are winning now because of me, yeah true story.

I figured Duke would be a blowout loss, so went to do something, checked my phone around phone around 5pm, I was like wtf I was in conplete shock. Then was gonna watch Villanova but decide not to, just put it on the radio and keep an eye on the boxscore on the computer, W. So I figured just coincidence or is it me, so I didn't watch Marquette and boom 3-0 now.
No worries, I won't watch tomorrow night and 4-0 guaranteed.

So we're gonna win the last 5, sweep 4 games in 4 nights, and winning the NC. It's already a done deal, we got this.

I take responsibility for Ponds too, I stopped watching and all of a sudden he's the best in all of college basketball, he's going for 50 tomorrow night.

I'll be accepting ThankYous after we win the NC. :p

Right on cue baby, 4-0
You yous guys, no worries we got this

The roll continues. The progress of Clark and Simon continues. The extraordinary performances by Ponds continues. Really hard to fathom how/why the light switch went on. Too bad we could not have stolen 2 or 3 of the earlier close ones. NIT firmly in sight if we can keep on going. Would be a HUGE coup and something to build on for next year.

A gritty game we would not close out during funk. Going small out of necessity has its challenges like allowing a ton of second shots. However you you have to play the hand you have. Amazing the amount of time the core guys play, iron men!

Looking back it was more or less not a team funk but a Shamorie funk caused by having to take up the slack for the slacker Marcus LoVett. Anyone even remember him? Somehow Shamorie settled down and started playing his own game with numerous drives to the basket instead of 30 foot threes. The staff may have played a role in his shot selection process and he began to remind me of the kid I watched in his senior year at Jefferson where he would take players one-on-one to the basket.
That is one key aspect of his game that may suffer should he go to the pros too early as NBA front lines average 6'10. He needs to now focus on his outside shooting and point guard skills and that is where Mullin and Richmond can influence his decision if it is not made up already. It is going to be an interesting couple of months to say the least.;)

Agreed Dan, but I still think he stays one more year. He’s not on any of the first round draft boards that I’ve seen. There are a lot of good guards coming out this year who have NBA size in addition to skills. Chandler Hutchinson at Boise St is one that comes to mind. There are also a few European kids I saw on the board. Not diminishing what Ponds has done, he’s been amazing! I just think it behooves him to stay one more year. He has to play PG in the NBA , he has to show that he can efficiently run a team and distribute the ball consistently in an efficient and effective manner. Last night I believe he had 10 assists so he’s beginning to show this now which is why I agreed with your point. But, based on how the draft is shaping up , I think he stays.

Us not being able to rebound puzzles me we have some HT 6-11 owens 6-7 amend and between them they can not get an offensive rebound What gives with that, Unless they just do not like to fight and get tough

Agreed about the puzzling aspect or rebounding. More often than not they are out of position or looking to block a shot and land out of position. They need to be more disciplined around the basket...Rebounding is a desire and instinct. As you've noticed, Ponds has an innate instinct for where to be at the right times.

Shamorie has been fabulous during the win streak and deserves all the honors/kudos he's been getting. Another encouraging development is that Clark, aside from shooting well, has started to rebound (averaging 6 per game over last 4 games). Hopefully that will carry over to next year, which along with the newly eligible bigs, should eliminate the rebounding disparities that have hurt us this year.

Gritty effort. For all the negatives on the stat sheet, this team found something to pull out a win on the road.

Making more plays down the stretch has become this team's calling card. The growth has been remarkable. And this is essentially a six man squad.

For all the crap this staff received earlier (and most was justified), they deserve credit for remaining calm. Maybe Mullin's "lack of fire" was instead the reassurance the kids needed. That kept the team together. Not many teams would remain this close knit while losing 11 in a row.

And, I know some new posters joined just because they had an ax to grind with Mullin. They wanted him fired. They are silent now.

Enjoy the ride. Pride is back in the program, for all of us. Sure this sets us up nicely for next year. But this year's story is not completed yet. And it is quickly becoming a page turner.

We are...

It's frustrating to watch our guys shoot from 3 and not move in afterward to get in the rebounding mix. Also true with many 2 point jumpers. Trimble is a good case in point, where he shoots from 3 and follows through and watches or retreats back on D. What happened to shooters following their shot getting in the rebounding mix.

I thought Gillen was way too repetitive . If I heard Brooklyn and Jefferson HS one more time , I was going to scream . That, plus , Cardinal Hayes and Iona Prep , who could figure out what he was talking about in seeding for HS playoffs . I liked Lappas better.

They could have taped Gillen's comments from the first five minutes and just put them on a loop, he is the worst color guy I've heard this year, not only is he repetitive but his voice is grating.,:p

Listening to Pete Gillen was like sitting next to an old alum at a game in CA. Didn't care that he repeated himself, as long as he wasn't rooting for DePaul. He's an old Brooklyn guy who obviously has a fondness for the program.
