While there’s clearly talent, the talent is not evenly distributed. Based on my observations of the early season, the fears that some had about Posh and Belo playing together have been borne out. Posh’s game has clearly suffered. I predict by season’s end that one of the two (likely Belo$ won’t be starting but we shall see.
The two transfers intoxicated fans, but so far there is nothing I see to indicate there will be much team chemistry. Early, but I think this group will produce a rather chaotic product with a lot of ups and downs this season.
I think DePaul is equally chaotic, so a SJ win, which I expect, will not convince me of anything. Games against the well coached, ball sharing teams also dedicated to defense will. Jury out I guess.
I think I’m probably Captain Obvious here, but what’s particularly concerning to me about this team is how much they’re turning the ball over. As chaotic as our prior teams coached by CMA played, I’ve always been impressed that for the most part we limited our turnovers.
This was particularly true of CMA’s first team who I think was the least talented, and incidentally, I think was CMA’s best coaching job here.
With Soriano’s emergence, this team is rebounding better than we have in a long time ,but the turnovers are killing us. Obviously our shooting issues have been well documented as well as the holes in our gambling defense, but the turnovers are maddening. Unfortunately, I think they’re a product of the transfers and lack of chemistry. Posh’s confidence is clearly diminished, Belo has been turnover prone his whole career, and Jones tends to be a black hole when he’s out on the perimeter playing “hero ball.”
Some of the deficiencies are a product of our roster and are likely not fixable, but others can be addressed with a particular style of coaching. Unfortunately, I don’t CMA’s style of letting these kids play free is working.
In the end I agree with Paultz that this is likely to be a chaotic team throughout the season. We will see glimpses in games and perhaps even larger stretches where we look incredible, but overall the style and core deficiencies are such that I think we’ll be exposed by good teams and will be a middle of the pack Big East team at best.
It’s very early and I really hope I’m wrong, but I’ve seen very little so far (save for the play of Soriano who has really been a pleasant surprise) that gives me much room for optimism.
