Just a thought re Joel’s struggles. How many times this year have we felt overmatched inside? Like, couldn’t hold our own on the boards or physically in the paint?

Yeah Joel’s offense has taken a hit, but we take for granted how much his size allows for us to matchup with anyone. And when we make it to the tourney we better be thankful that a bad matchup with a 7footer isn’t a death blow like it basically would have been for seemingly every sju team I’ve followed previous to Joel’s arrival. If he averages 11 & 7(more than solid BTW) the rest of the way and we win 3-4 more games I’ll still remember him as the 16 & 12 double double machine.
Agreed. Only game I remember getting abused underneath was the one with Oduro.

If we make the tournament it is a good year for ST John’s obviously. But this HAS NOT been a great job by Pitino. If we do fall short, to me squarely on the coach.

Forget the whole blowing up the roster, it took Rick way too long to figure out his roster and rotation. This seems to be a yearly thing for ST John’s for some reason.

Outside of Jenkins, every other player on the roster pretty much regressed from their previous years. Jenkins is playing very well now but the over reliance on him early and the mind games/ odd use of Dingle and Soriano is a main reason we are on bubble and not squarely in. The yo yo -ing of Taylor also was strange.

Lastly that calling out team was not strategic or motivational but came out of frustration and pettiness. All the credit goes to the players for moving past that and trying to salvage the season.

I cannot agree with some of these points. With roster "blow-up"- the best players (Storr and Jones) he tried to keep and they wanted to go elsewhere. We would prob have at least 4 more wins if they were here. The other players that Anderson had other than Joel were not great at all and may have held us further back. Other players were essentially dismissed by the school. For example, no excuse for bad grades (especially at SJU) or pushing managers. Those were bad locker room guys.

So with a short-period of time and not much recruiting runway (and yes dealing also with this new NIL silliness), Pitino had to throw together a team - the best he could for what was out there. He knew most of the players had "reached their max growth" but he wanted to try and be competitive with all that college veteran experience. Similar to Lavin's first year. He has a few development pieces that played well this year Zuby, Brady and Wilcher that more fit his system.

I would say the calling out-of-the team actually seemed to work if you look at their Win/Losses since that game. It was outside the box but clearly it did what was intended after some very bad play. The players knew it was motivation and have for the most part responded. We want this momentum going into Big East Tournament. We have a decent shot at NCAAs and for sure at minimum NIT. Which is more post-season then we had under Anderson. It is a testament to his coaching that you can throw together a team in a couple months with all new chemistry from coaching down to players/transfers and have it ready to contend in post-season.

Welcome back Larry! Your adoring fans missed you.

But just so you are aware, in your absence, Boo Harvey found another backcourt mate he found chemistry with, who is a fiery defensive menace, Marillac.

Beware, you may have been Wally Pipped. 😁

You do realize we won BIG. Plus we beat creightin , on a winning streak. It's march and our season is totally alive (first time that has been said in Many years). Dingle now the player we all were expecting. Even after a great game people find something negative to say
We aren’t that good but we also aren’t bad. You guys are insane getting too high and too low.

Dingle isn’t suddenly the player we expected. That’s beyond wishful thinking. He’s the same player offensively he’s been all year…defense has improved substantially.

90% of the shots he’s taken all year have looked great…even his misses. He just gets completely cut out of the game for huge stretches no matter how he’s doing.

We cannot stop any guards from driving but we cover the three point shot very well. So if we get matched up with an unathletic team that lives with the three, we can win that type of game.

Agree.
Just think. —
6 of the 12 loses should have went our way and their was a possibility we could be 25 - 6 at seasons end and in the top 10. Not so far off.
Pitino did what all was hoping for - playing exciting meaningful basketball in March and fielding a competitive team.

I have to push back on this idea that anyone other than Jordan Dingle is to blame for his lack of production. It is a make or miss game, and he has started to make shots instead of missing them. There is no drastic change in the way he is being used, he is just playing more confident and aggressive, and actually making his shots.

I do agree the usage of Taylor this season is the biggest head scratcher of the year. For a team that has struggled defensively, his insistence on keeping him in the doghouse was odd.

Crazy. You need to get those heels out of the ground before you start growing roots!

Outside of Jenkins, everyone has played below previous year.
Pitino is a great coach, just thought was uneven job to say the least to date.
Thought early on if had given Dingle at least half of the leeway gave Jenkins, team would have jelled sooner.

Not sure where I went?

You do realize we are now expected to make the NCAA tournament? If we were not that good we wouldnt even be considered for the NIT! How about just enjoy the ride?

Dingle (with the staff's suggestion or on his own) stopped almost exclusively shooting the 3 and went to an almost exclusively mid-game. That has made all the difference, IMHO.

Why is Dingle playing below how he played last year automatically Pitino's fault?

Dingle is on a better team with more talent, in a tougher league against better competition.

“I hope he doesn’t get mad at me for saying this. Coach Masiello said something along the lines of sharks don’t climb trees and squirrels don’t swim,” Dingle, averaging a career-low 11.1 points and shooting 29.6 from 3-point range, recalled with a laugh. “Do what you do. Be a shark, go swim. Be a squirrel, climb a tree. Don’t try to do things outside of yourself. That’s just what I’ve been telling myself. Instead of trying to be out there making a whole bunch of home run plays, do the simple things that I know how to do well. It’s been a good mantra to say to myself.”

Jordan told us straight up that he has changed his approach down the stretch here. Pitino wasn't the one in the game, forcing/missing threes and playing timid for 2/3rd's of the season
