Depaul Game Thread

depaul was favored by one on the betting line to win this game. we won. that's all you need to know. good win on the road against a pretty good team.

Depaul wasn't a bad team in the least. They played and shot quite well. We just played better. Good and tough road win.

Correct. they beat Pitt and Rutgers......I hope we do.

I am a realist, and lets be honest, beating DePaul by 6 on the road isn't something to write home about. While we won a BE road game, and got to 4-6 in the BE, there are still problems. I am very hopeful for the future, and I love Lavin, but not everything is perfect. I hope you are not a Mets or Jets fan, with your attitude.

So, let me understand your position from the above:
We won on the road BUT big deal. We should have lost as we we were not favored. Check!
There are still problems. I agree! We start 5 freshmen and have one "playing" sub. That is a problem. Check!
Your love, love , love.....BUT seek perfection from 5 freshman. Check!
I am a Mets fan. Check!

I think I underestimated you.

Well it is good you are the one of us who is a Met fan, bc you seem to be able to handle it. First off, I am happy with the win, it was a big win for a young team to win a BE game on the road against a team they should beat. I understand we start 5 freshmen and they are learning and I do not seek perfection. However, by February, 5 freshman all rated in the top 100 except for 1 should be playing well. Kentucky had all freshmen last yr for the most part and went to the final four. DePaul isn't exactly a good veteran team.

I don't really understand your logic. I have never not supported the team. I love this team and all I do is talk St. John's bball too anyone who will listen. I am sorry that I don't think your relative, Mike Dunlap (you have to be related to him), is a very good game coach. Doesn't mean he doesn't know bball and doesn't mean he isnt a very good assistant, but he is not a good in game coach. There is a reason he is a career assistant at the D1 level. I am actually a Dunlap fan for what he is, but I don't think he is a competent game coach that is all. We are all entitled to our opinions.

And the problem I have with this St. John's fan base is everyone is sensitive and passive. I go to the games and yell and cheer and stand up when we get on a run, only for about 100 other people to do the same. Its quite frankly embarrassing. I am not even an alum of SJU and I care more than mostly anyone but the few hundred die hards.

I don't completely agree with upstate,
But there are problems beyond our inexperience and lack of depth. Potentially fixable things, but certainly more could be expected from Dom Amir and gift. They've each contributed immensely at times, so i certainly appreciate what theyre doing right, but all three are a liability on offense minus a tip-in, or fast break dunk. In the half court they have shown zero ability to create and turn the ball over way to often for guys that get limited touches. Dom alone had 5 turnovers against depaul I think.

Take nothing away from the win. But there is work to be done. And I'm sure the staff and players look at it the same way. If we want to be a team that doesn't just compete next year, but is a real force - then there's quite a few things we need to tighten up amongst the guys that are on the roster right now.

Are you really questioning Coach Dunlap? WOW. Coach Dunlap has won two national championships. His last championship team, while at the D-2 level, led that nation in scoring margin and AVERAGED over 90 points per game.

There are so many things Coach wants to do that he can't because of lack of depth, experience, and size. Nobody should be playing more than 25-28 mpg if Dunlap had his way. We'd trap all over the court...baseline, coffin corner, mid court traps all game, and pressure every inch of the floor to force ball-handlers to the sideline, setting up predictable cross-court passes. If we played that way now, we'd lose every game by the under 12 time out of the first half.

I look at the sideline and I see a coach that won 2 national championships, coached in the NBA (and was called the most knowledgeable basketball person alive by George Karl), and led Arizona the Sweet 16. I see another coach that won SIX National Coach of the Year awards. I also see a coach that has personally trained several NBA all-stars.

We are in good hands.

 Very good road win!
D'Angelo with a career high 29 points! Phil had a great homecoming. GG was a man off the bench. Moe injured but toughed it out. Great distribution of minutes by coach D!
Enjoyed the intermittent comic relief provided by the "sky-falling-falling" crew ......... Funny no closing comments after a win from the "keep-it-positive" crew. LOL!! Sorry we won guys! I am sure you will be in top form Saturday.

here's a poster that is just lost....

Not really, the only lost posters are the doom and gloom crowd.
For the millionth time we are a 7 man rotation and only have 2-3 players that were slated to start on the roster. All the rest were supposed to come off the bench for a season or two until they got their feet wet.
Class of 72 is spot on.

A great win for this beyond young and inexperienced team.

A road win vs. DePaul. Should we be elated? No. But this was one of those games that THIS team has to win. All teams have games on the schedule that they SHOULD win if they want to meet and exceed their potential. For us at this juncture, it was one of those games. After battling Villanova into overtime and losing, beating WV, and an impressive second half vs. Duke, this was a game that they really had to win if they were going to count the last three games as signs of their improvement. They won, it was a good win, and going forward they have some business to take care of in order to make this campaign a good season for this team.

The most impressive this about this game wasn't who we beat and where but that we voted 59 points in th second half. When's the last time st johns had an output like that in a half? It's also that once again we pulled into the lead and didnt allow the other team to come back as we had a few times previously. The team is growing and putting together more consistent performances. IMO that's what made last night impressive.

We shot over 70% in the 2nd half. Also, we won had such a big free throw advantage. Very sloppy first half but two impressive runs to close the gap to end the first half and, ultimately to take and hold the lead in the second. To be able to win when Moe has such an off night is a good sign. Growing pains but you can definitely see an increase in overall confidence.

Forget bringing in bigs..... We need shooters, this team can't shoot.

Melvin is taking Mo to the cleaners..... Perhaps Dunlap should wake up and put someone else on him. He is single. Handidly being the Johnnies with Mo guarding him. Wake up coach.

Are you and illwill related?

definitely not two rocket scientists

Oh wait I forgot...... if you are critical about anything here, you are either stupid or wrond. Thanks for the enlightenment Willie.

See you Saturday...I sure you will posting on here about how can't we beat Syracuse and Lavin is at fault for not getting a big man to guard Fab Melo..big day for Mr. Negative

I don't think anyone is calling you or any fan stupid here but knocking the team or the coach on every other play with a negative comment, is comical, as Austour put it:)
If a few members here say Will is wrong for calling out coach D after every missed shot and blaming coach D for turnovers it is because they are seeing the game differently as it is progressing.
We only have six players, all inexperienced, so what you see is what you get without junior of senior leadership on the floor. No team in the country has the youth that we do in the first five players who start for their team. Not one is a McDonald's AA as they are at Kentucky or UNC and even there, they have upperclassmen to balance the roster.
Enjoy watching the youngest team in St. John's history! It will never be seen again in our lifetime.
Think like those players are one of your own kids. You will appreciate the games much more. :)

I assume you are referring to yourself. We have a 6'8 future lottery pick, a SG that is going to break the single-season trey record as a freshman--and probably the all-time career points record before all is said and done, a combo guards that shows flashes of being unguardable and a huge competitive spirit at all times, we have two top 75 RSCI stud defender athletes, and a stud PG in street clothes itching to get on the court.

This team will be insanely good. You are foolish if you think otherwise. At least you will be able to revel in the Syracuse loss this weekend, but you'll be in for it next season when these kids make the Sweet 16.

I was referring to that poster alluding to other posters rooting for this team to lose. "Sorry we won guys!!!"

Clearly we all have the same goal in mind: to cheer on a winning team.

No, it really is some pretty stupid commentary. Very much akin to calling out Steven Hawking for not knowing his physics or Eddie Robinson for being an incompetent coach because he never coached at a BCS school.

Great post. It's mind-boggling how so many people here are just positive 100% of the time, and then start crying whenever there is even a glimpse of negativity posted.

Yes, these kids are young and very talented, but that doesn't mean they should not be critiqued. And that goes for coach dunlap as well.

At this point in the season they should not be the same players they were in november. DeAngelo was AMAZING in the second half, but he was embarassing in the first half. I can deal with missing shots, but the kid was just hogging the ball on every posession. Dom Pointer is still lost offensively. And GG can be a great rebounder and defender at times, but his offensive game if he's not tipping the ball in leaves a lot to be desired. I also cringe every time Amir tries to create his own shot.

It was a good win, and yes the future is bright, but this team is still under .500. Let's stop painting the town red and take off the blinders for a second...

Stupidity is contagious i guess considering what i've had to read on this board. If you don't think coach dunlap should have had a talk with deangelo after his first half performance, then i won't call you an idiot but ill just say you don't know too much about basketball.

Let me just close my thoughts on this win with the most insightful comment made by mjmaherjr:

"Dunlap not doing a good job of stopping Harrison from shooting. 7 3's now "

That is why he scored 29 points!!! That is why he came within one field goal of a 3 point record!!

D'Angelo had the best game of his career. Dunlap actually was quoted as telling the guys to keep shooting the way they were and not change a thing. Everybody kept shooting and we shot the lights out in the second. Btw, the guy that doesn't know basketball is the one who would tell his best shooter and scorer to reel it in. If Dunlap listened to your advice we would have lost by double digits. We rode out Harrison's performance and the rest stepped up in the second half.

You can't make this stuff up....

At this point in the season they should not be the same players they were in november. ....

Dude, this is NOT the same team we saw just a few weeks ago nevertheless November. They are visibly MENTALLY STRONGER than they were a few weeks ago. In games a few weeks ago, once someone got into foul trouble or something didn't break their way, the team would often implode. The last 2 games, the team has dealt with being down huge on the road (with Moe playing with foul trouble) and coming back and yesterday won on the road with Moe injured the entire game. This team is dealing with adversity MUCH better and not getting discouraged as easily.

And there has absolutely been player development. Phil Greene is playing OUT OF POSITION right now as a PG and has really transitioned pretty well into this role in the last few weeks. You're also seeing Moe doing a much better job of being active around the basket and dealing with contact a lot better. Yesterday, God's Gift showed improvement in terms of not trying to do too much on the offensive end and he kept his role simple.

And if you REALLY think Amir hasn't improved over his month and a half here, you're lost. The kid has been more and more comfortable each game. Remember that this team has 7 scholarship players, 6 of them first year players AND we lost our PG during the season. That is THE toughest position player to lose. If you disagree with certain moves Mike Dunlap has made that's fine, but the man has won national championships on the college level. 4-6 in the Big East considering what we've gone through is pretty OK and the growth is visible. I think Dunlap has done a DAMN good job moving these guys forward.
