Depaul Game Thread

Forget bringing in bigs..... We need shooters, this team can't shoot.

Melvin is taking Mo to the cleaners..... Perhaps Dunlap should wake up and put someone else on him. He is single. Handidly being the Johnnies with Mo guarding him. Wake up coach.

Are you and illwill related?

definitely not two rocket scientists

Oh wait I forgot...... if you are critical about anything here, you are either stupid or wrond. Thanks for the enlightenment Willie.

I don't think anyone is calling you or any fan stupid here but knocking the team or the coach on every other play with a negative comment, is comical, as Austour put it:)
If a few members here say Will is wrong for calling out coach D after every missed shot and blaming coach D for turnovers it is because they are seeing the game differently as it is progressing.
We only have six players, all inexperienced, so what you see is what you get without junior of senior leadership on the floor. No team in the country has the youth that we do in the first five players who start for their team. Not one is a McDonald's AA as they are at Kentucky or UNC and even there, they have upperclassmen to balance the roster.
Enjoy watching the youngest team in St. John's history! It will never be seen again in our lifetime.
Think like those players are one of your own kids. You will appreciate the games much more. :)

No, it really is some pretty stupid commentary. Very much akin to calling out Steven Hawking for not knowing his physics or Eddie Robinson for being an incompetent coach because he never coached at a BCS school.

Stupidity is contagious i guess considering what i've had to read on this board. If you don't think coach dunlap should have had a talk with deangelo after his first half performance, then i won't call you an idiot but ill just say you don't know too much about basketball.

D'Angelo had the best game of his career. Dunlap actually was quoted as telling the guys to keep shooting the way they were and not change a thing. Everybody kept shooting and we shot the lights out in the second. Btw, the guy that doesn't know basketball is the one who would tell his best shooter and scorer to reel it in. If Dunlap listened to your advice we would have lost by double digits. We rode out Harrison's performance and the rest stepped up in the second half.

So, according to you, dunlap knew that d'angelo would be lights out in the second half and go on to a career performance?

You can't make this stuff up....

No, not at all. Good coaches NEVER tell their best shooters and scorers to back off, even when they're slumping. It's the worst coaching move one can make. Not sure you know much about this sport, but it doesn't seem so. Good coaches ride out their best players, even when the shots not falling. The worst thing Dunlap could have done was messed with D'Angelo's confidence. It's not just with D'Angelo. We weren't going to win that game if we stopped shooting and took the air out of the ball.

I believe John is "realfan," as maher stated about a week ago.

I am a realist, and lets be honest, beating DePaul by 6 on the road isn't something to write home about. While we won a BE road game, and got to 4-6 in the BE, there are still problems. I am very hopeful for the future, and I love Lavin, but not everything is perfect. I hope you are not a Mets or Jets fan, with your attitude.

So, let me understand your position from the above:
We won on the road BUT big deal. We should have lost as we we were not favored. Check!
There are still problems. I agree! We start 5 freshmen and have one "playing" sub. That is a problem. Check!
Your love, love , love.....BUT seek perfection from 5 freshman. Check!
I am a Mets fan. Check!

I think I underestimated you.

Well it is good you are the one of us who is a Met fan, bc you seem to be able to handle it. First off, I am happy with the win, it was a big win for a young team to win a BE game on the road against a team they should beat. I understand we start 5 freshmen and they are learning and I do not seek perfection. However, by February, 5 freshman all rated in the top 100 except for 1 should be playing well. Kentucky had all freshmen last yr for the most part and went to the final four. DePaul isn't exactly a good veteran team.

I don't really understand your logic. I have never not supported the team. I love this team and all I do is talk St. John's bball too anyone who will listen. I am sorry that I don't think your relative, Mike Dunlap (you have to be related to him), is a very good game coach. Doesn't mean he doesn't know bball and doesn't mean he isnt a very good assistant, but he is not a good in game coach. There is a reason he is a career assistant at the D1 level. I am actually a Dunlap fan for what he is, but I don't think he is a competent game coach that is all. We are all entitled to our opinions.

And the problem I have with this St. John's fan base is everyone is sensitive and passive. I go to the games and yell and cheer and stand up when we get on a run, only for about 100 other people to do the same. Its quite frankly embarrassing. I am not even an alum of SJU and I care more than mostly anyone but the few hundred die hards.

Great post. It's mind-boggling how so many people here are just positive 100% of the time, and then start crying whenever there is even a glimpse of negativity posted.

Yes, these kids are young and very talented, but that doesn't mean they should not be critiqued. And that goes for coach dunlap as well.

At this point in the season they should not be the same players they were in november. ....

Dude, this is NOT the same team we saw just a few weeks ago nevertheless November. They are visibly MENTALLY STRONGER than they were a few weeks ago. In games a few weeks ago, once someone got into foul trouble or something didn't break their way, the team would often implode. The last 2 games, the team has dealt with being down huge on the road (with Moe playing with foul trouble) and coming back and yesterday won on the road with Moe injured the entire game. This team is dealing with adversity MUCH better and not getting discouraged as easily.

And there has absolutely been player development. Phil Greene is playing OUT OF POSITION right now as a PG and has really transitioned pretty well into this role in the last few weeks. You're also seeing Moe doing a much better job of being active around the basket and dealing with contact a lot better. Yesterday, God's Gift showed improvement in terms of not trying to do too much on the offensive end and he kept his role simple.

And if you REALLY think Amir hasn't improved over his month and a half here, you're lost. The kid has been more and more comfortable each game. Remember that this team has 7 scholarship players, 6 of them first year players AND we lost our PG during the season. That is THE toughest position player to lose. If you disagree with certain moves Mike Dunlap has made that's fine, but the man has won national championships on the college level. 4-6 in the Big East considering what we've gone through is pretty OK and the growth is visible. I think Dunlap has done a DAMN good job moving these guys forward.

A pretty, sound post. Rack it!

fair point(s) but it wasn't the missed shots that got me upset it was the shots he was taking. First time all season i had seen D'angelo literally acting like he was the only player on the court. I thought a minute or two on the bench would have been appropriate just to calm him down.

Yes, the team as a whole is better but i really dont think Dom and GG have gotten any better. Amir, i'll give you, but he's still limited offensively at this point.

That's not the point tho: this board seems to be incapable of handeling adversity, or negative comments. No matter how young this team is, when you are 10-12 you are prone to criticism. We all know this team has the potential to be great, but that doesn't mean we can't access the current team and their flaws. You don't get any wins for having a team full of potential...

Here's the bottom line to me with this team.

They may not go far into the BE Tournament. And they probably won't make the NCAAs. But it is an absolute joy watching this young team develop and grow right before our eyes. Seeing the likes of D'Angelo and Moe blossom like this is well worth the price of this year being a challenge. But next year: Watch out!

I agree but I think we have to acknowledge the fact that Greene has become a completely serviceable PG at this point. That's good because I don't think there are going to be a lot of SG minutes available as long as Harrison is around. Greene deserves to play and his ability to man two positions is a very positive thing. If Branch is good enough to keep him on the bench that's OK but I have to see that to believe it. In retrospect going into this season with Nuri penciled in as the PG was a rather significant mistake and we owe Phil big time for picking up the pieces of that.mess. Same story with Hardy last year. Hopefully the SJU PG saga will be over for awhile now. Thank God (and Phil) for that. Now I think we have to proceed as if Moe is leaving and celebrate if he doesn't. Meanwhile some beef is needed ASAP regardless of rankings. Under the radar kids emerge and play in the NCAAs every year. It's a numbers game and the more prospects we have the more likely we are to find one. God knows there's room on the roster. I hope we're not putting all our eggs in some wrong baskets.

Sometimes reading the posts on this board confuse me.
1) Coach Dunlap was placed in a difficult situation and has done a remarkable job. He has molded seven players into a cohesive unit, that has been playing well recently. He has dealt with the adversity of losing Nuri, a situation which could have caused the team to fall apart under a person with less leadership ability. He is not the head coach, and this can lead to players questioning his authority. To his and the entire staffs credit, the players have bought into the program. Coach Dunlap has won every place he has been. What scares me is that he has done such a remarkable job under difficult circumstances, he will definitely be a head coach somewhere next year if he decides to leave. I, for one, would hate to lose him.
2) Phil Greene has improved tremendously in recent weeks. This has do to with the coaching he has received and his willingness to listen and learn.
3) D'Angelo continues to be the heart and soul of this team, he gives his all in every game. What more can you ask of a player. Sometimes he gets out of control, but if you don't think that Coach Dunlap spoke to him about his shot selection during halftime, something is wrong with you. He is not afraid to fail.
4) Moe really impressed me last night by playing through pain and rebounding and playing defense when his offensive game was off. He is a future lottery pick. I doubt that many of us had him in the lottery after two years, maybe it is the coaching.
5) Sir Dom gives it his all night in and night out, what more can you ask of a player. Yes he is overzealous
at times but it helps more often than not. He will continue to get better.
6) Amir has been here less than two months and is contributing. He has gotten better each game as he has become more comfortable. He will continue to get better through the rest of the year.
7) Gift has done better than anyone has expected. His play last night was a major reason the we won. He is not a savior and we should not expect him to be one. The block at the end of the West Virginia game and his play in the second half last night show that he is able to make a solid contribution to this team.
8) Malik performs his role. He give the guards a break and plays defense and hustles all the time. His basket before half time in the West Virginia game was a bonus.
In conclusion, while this team has a lot more growing to do, if someone told me that we would be where we are after having endured Coach Lavin's health issues, three players not qualifying and our starting point guard quitting the team, I would have thought they were crazy. That they are playing so well is a testament to the coaching they have received and the character of the young men involved. They have been knocked down but continuously get back up and fight.

Good post, and i actually agree with a lot of what you said. but that doesn't mean that certain posters aren't going to critique the team moving forward. We're all fans, we all have the same agenda and same desires for this team. During a game, and in a game thread, negative comments are going to come out because at that time some of us aren't looking to the future. We are watching our current team play, whether good or bad. Some people are able to just sit back and think, "hey, he just threw the balls into the stands but it's ok...he'll get better" whereas others live in the moment and live for every posession. Neither way of viewing the game or team is right and neither is wrong.

Phenomenal post. You said it better than I did. Well done.

Panther, your excellent, objective post is very much appreciated in this instant gratification world we are living in.

Great game by Gift tonight.... ..but he usually does well against teams without a big inside presence. I hope everyone doesn't bash him when his shots get blocked and consistently gets out rebounded by Syracuse on Saturday.

What confusion? With a few debateable exceptions I think everyone would pretty much agree with your summary. I think Dunlap's done well but I think the Nova game got away from him and that will be a big one at season's end. Otherwise the guy can definitely coach and we're fortunate to have him. Regarding the players I think Sir Dom might have the most upside but I believe he was rated higher than Mo and D Angelo and he's yet to show that kind of chops. That might be a good thing going forward though. I worry about the NBA with Mo and the Phillies with Amir but we do have some gems. Now we have to go get more.

Dude, go back and read all of your posts here and on the Jungle. Your positive to negative post ratio has to be 1:50. On top of your incessant whining and crying and bitching about the team, the coaches , and the fans, you are consistently wrong about almost everything. Give it a rest already.

I hear Big East Boards is looking for new posters... good lord.

However sometimes that is a mistake as noted when Riley let Starks keep shooting the Knicks right out of the NBA finals. Sometimes two schools of thought, but I get your point.

Great post. It is nice to have well, thought out, posts to read. Too bad you don't post more often. There is far too much nonsense that causes one's eyes to bleed.
