D'Angelo Harrison

FROM NEWSDAY:

St. John's D'Angelo Harrison older, wiser

August 15, 2013 BY JORDAN LAUTERBACH

Following Wednesday's practice, St. John's junior guard D'Angelo Harrison was mobbed by his teammates at center court. The occasion was a special one -- his 20th birthday. But for Harrison, the revelry was less about his birthday and more about being back in the place he loves.

"It felt like I'm wanted again and back in the mix," he said.

Harrison was suspended for the final three games of the regular season and postseason for a violation of team rules. Before the suspension, Harrison was averaging 17.8 points and 4.3 rebounds.

"I was hurt," Harrison said of the suspension. "I definitely wanted to play for the team. I told them right then and there that I wanted to stay. I'm back now and am looking forward to having a great season."

St. John's reinstated Harrison in the first week of July. He will be with the team on their upcoming "Taking Europe by Storm" tour, which runs from Monday through Sept. 1. The team will travel to France, Italy and Spain. While in Europe, the Red Storm will play five games against European professionals.

The NCAA allows teams 10 practices before a European trip, according to a news release. The practices have given St. John's coach Steve Lavin an early look at his 2013-2014 squad, including Harrison.

"What I noticed more than anything is that his temperament and maturity is on display," Lavin said. "That's encouraging. Like all kids, he's a work in progress. But to this point, I'm impressed."

After spending the summer training with former NBA guard John Lucas in Houston, Harrison believes he has shown the necessary growth to earn back the trust of his coaches and teammates.

"I've stuck with it and done everything they've asked me to do," Harrison said. "I finished the semester off well and made the Big East All-Academic team. I've talked to the team and the staff. I've done everything right."

Harrison credits much of his rehabilitation to Lucas' wellness program. As part of the program, Harrison worked out twice a day, saw an anger management counselor five days a week and also participated in yoga.

Harrison said the program helped him both on and off the court.

"I'm in a better place," he said. "I can honestly say I'm a different person."

All nice to hear, and I don't believe it's in his toolbox, but I would like to hear him express contrition, especially in the direction of those he publicly torched with his outbursts. His comments appear to be more about him than how his behavior affected others. That being said, he appears ready to be more mature about controlling himself, got some counseling and has initiated some behaviors like yoga that should help him control himself. Good luck to him. A lot of the team's success this season depends on him having the right attitude and performing well.

To which outbursts are you referring? I don't recall any. Who did he "publicly torch"? I don't recall him saying anything about anyone. I recall he rolled his eyes, stared off into the crowd, and was late for the bus. Perhaps he should apologize to Trailways. That'd be the classy thing to do.

The final event that precipitated the suspension was a very public profanity laced outburst against the coaches during the away game in which LAvin was attending his father's funeral. At least one redmen.com'er was there at courtside and was appalled that the language was tolerated without an immediate reaction.

No. Lavin missed the Syracuse and Louisville games. Harrison was suspended following the Pittsburgh game, which was after the South Florida game, which was after the Louisville game. So there were two games between the alleged "final event," in which Harrison played 70 of 80 minutes; that doesn't seem like he was being punished. If he "publicly torched ... the coaches" in " a very public profanity laced outburst" while TGAPL was attending his fathers funeral, that would have been around February 10th. According to the NY Post his transgression in Syracuse was that "he turned his back on a huddle." Harrison was suspended on March 1, three weeks later. Thus are you shown to be misinformed, as usual. I know you don't like his thuggish tattoos but there's no need to libel him.

Off your meds? I want to see him do well. Reading about his academic success is good news, and he appears to have taken steps to control his outbursts. If you are going to comments on tattoos in basketball, you may be better served to follow another sport. All I particularly care about is that we field a competitive team that represents the university well.

“@DickieV: St John's can be a major player in new Big East - key will be D 'Angelo Harrison-ppl say he has changed 4 the good @LennRobbins Lav excited”

Lavin on SNY yesterday talking about European trip and Harrison. Looked at trip as beneficial to team as they learn more about themselves and its educational benefits, plus how Harrison has become a good citizen.

Very promising - D'lo in a good frame of mind will be a major positive for the team.

Don't know if you guys follow D'Lo on instagram, but he's constantly posting pictures joking around with the other guys, signing autographs for kids, and it looks like he's loving it. Hopefully Lavin's tough love worked and he truly has changed for the better because we need his shooting prowess if we want to go anywhere.

I've watched every game DLO played for us and failed to see any misconduct directed toward either our opponents or the officials. There were no fights or prolonged arguments that I saw. The same thing was true about Sean Evans. All we've heard about these kids is allegations of unsatisfactory conduct which, in my opinion never reached the court. Then, in the Evans case Dunlap makes a statement that he would want Sean on his side in a dark alley and suddenly Lavin was presenting him with the game ball vs Duke and bragging that this was one of the finest reclamation examples in his coaching career. Odds are we're going to hear the same if DLO lights it up this year. The only thing that I can deduce from all this BS is that Lavin gets upset when players don't buy in to his " system" which is so obviously flawed. Sir Dom chose to take out his frustrations on the opposition and committed more mayhem than Evans and DLO combined. His choice of targets was wiser however but he did buy a suspension for it. After his performance he is still seen as a heroic hustler instead of a recalcitrant miscreant with rolling eyeballs. Sounds like a double standard rooted in insecurity starting at the top to me. DLO is a talented kid and I only hope he's allowed to create and take over when the situation calls for it. Here's hoping the behind the scenes temper tantrums are over and we finally have a BS free solid year.

I'm sick of hearing about D'lo and his antics. It's only an issue with us fans. The kid was 19...he carried the shooting and scoring of his entire team and he was frustrated with the losing and the performance of his teamates. He is an emotional player that needs to learn to channel it differently. He can still use those emotions, but he can't be a slave to them.

I expect a great season from him. Without him, we are like a muzzled pit bull in a dog fight.

Well said, especially the muzzled comment. I think this is just as big a year for Lavin. Just about all the excuses are gone and it's time to show what SJU basketball is really all about. I appreciate all the info from the guys who follow the recruiting trail but I look forward to seeing the real deal on this team and the ones to follow. I'll believe the commitments when they happen. I'll also be interested in what happens in Europe. The new injury news is a little disconcerting. I also found the coaches letter to be a little short on substance. We'll see what happens on the court and that's what matters to me.

Only an issue for us fans? Um he was suspended now is back and articles are being written about the situation. Wasn't the fans who suspended him or are writing the articles but we shouldn't discuss it? Tired of talking about it but than you talk about it. And to think I gave you a thank you and a post totally agreeing with you re Delgado/Sanchez (Marillac). As for bobre: Sean Evans? Anything else new? Anything about LeRon Ellis? Don't take this post to serious just busting you guys chops! :)

Even those like myself who have expressed that they aren't huge fans of his antics and posing hopefully understand, like I do, that he was the heart and soul of the team the last two years. Doesn't mean we have to squelch our opinion that he should probably grow up. Looks like that message was sent far more effectively by the staff. As long as he gets back on defense rather than arguing a call and costing the team points that would be a good start. Seemed to happen one or two times a game.
