Curbelo (Possibly) a Johnny

I mean....that's about as "half empty" as one can get. Hang in there, Fran.....better times ahead. They'll at least tease us with a mini-run.
"Better times ahead." Unfortunately, we have been hearing that for twenty plus years. At least previously, some of the University's other sports were pretty good, But, for example, has anyone looked at the baseball team's record this season? The current regime has taken St. John's athletic programs backward, not forward.

A

Aside from posh, most all our other backcourt guys are more wings than guards. Smaller guys like King can get into the paint on O and get underneath guys on D. Not trying to tell you anything you don’t already know but if Posh was out, not only did we miss his pg abilities, we missed his breakdown ability. Plus I think King is more combo than point guard and Posh will be a Junior. Good programs, and we know we aren’t there yet, don’t wait until starters are seniors to recruit their backups.
I remember McGriff giving the team some good minutes during the one season that he played here. If King is willing to accept his role, let's hope that he improves during his time here.

Fans used to complain about blue bloods and the abuses of under the table deals that gave them a huge competitive advantage in recruiting. While schools like Kentucky, Kansas, UNC, and others were getting away with $100,000 deals, schools like St. John's were being investigated for giving kids lunch money or waving at a recruit at the wrong time of the year.
Now some are openly condoning schools paying college players in football and basketball hundreds of thousands dollars because they have alums lining kids pockets.
This unlimited payola firmly establishes the haves and have nots of "amateur" college athletics.
Why you or anyone with an ounce of respect for the sport would not be opposed to financial caps is bewildering.
Folks here and at other non-state funded schools should then reevaluate the metrics for measuring the success of coaches at less endowed schools like St. John's.
One of the supposed restrictions of an NIL is that it cannot influence the decision of a high school student as to what college to attend.
The whole process is now a complete cluster F.

NIL is not going anywhere or getting a cap. If anything, the $$$ gap will probably widen. Trying to fight it or argue against it is fruitless because its not going anywhere. I equate it to small market teams and large market teams in baseball. Unfortunately we are the Pittsburgh Pirates of college hoops. We need to strive to be the TB Rays. Doing more with less financial resources when it comes to NIL.

Possibly 1 other poster raised the issue of how does Curbelo coming here affect Mathis ? In addition to King ? Let’s face it , with Champ , Wheeler and Coburn gone , who is going to shoot the ball ? At this point , I would say , CMA still needs 2 shooters to come in . And , they better be given decent minutes , not jerked around .. I have only seen Curbelo once for Illinois and it wasn’t a good game for him . But , it seems his body of work indicates otherwise . He’s quite small too, as I recall . Small boned and light in weight . But , we will see how this all fits , if he comes here . I hope he’s everything people are touting him as being .

Mathis will be largely unaffected if Belo comes. We are very active for shooters and stretch 4.

When Belo is right, he’s one of the best phs in the country. Can affect the game in many ways without even scoring.

I think Posh will score even more, as he is a playmaker. I expect Wusu to improve, and become an even better shooter from deep.

Don’t know how freshmen will shoot. But seems potential is there. Posh/Belo slashing defenses all night to open shooters or dunks for Soriano/Nywie/Stanley/Traeore.

Two menacing defenders on the perimeter. Can’t just let the other person bring it up.

We won’t have to press as much, because those two will be able to disrupt full court.

Staff is very active though, as I said earlier.

I am hoping Posh and Curbelo could be a poor man's version of the backcourt we had with Boo Harvey and Michael Porter. Obviously the 3 point shooting and the speed of play is dramatically different but they will be exciting to watch and hopefully will make the players around them better with their passing skills and tenacious defense. That's all you can hope for at this point. It's up to the staff to find shooters to incorporate so we can get back to the NCAA and win a game which hasn't happened since 2000.

Not going to get excited until this is a done deal and like I said yesterday nothing is a done deal here.

That team was 17-12 and limped into the tournament before getting beaten by a Florida team without its best player.

But the key here is they made the tournament, something most of us thought we would this year!!
I guess but that was not a successful season and hoping for a poor man’s version of Harvey and Porter would portend a worse season. Arguably competition was better back in the 80s with kids staying in school for four years so who knows. Bottom line, we need to hit some home runs in the portal, and while there is clearly risk with Curbelo, I think he would be a great pickup.

And even if he comes, he will be poorly coached by a guy who is about two seasons away from being shown the door. Then the whole process will start over again while we give the next guy a "few years to build his team." You'd think that once in awhile this athletic depart would get something right just by accident. But, no such luck.
