Wally was a ball boy for the team when he was in middle school, or earlier. Old FB coach at SJU, Dutch Ouderkirk, was good friends with his family and would drive Wally to the games. And yes, he idolized Mullin and wanted to come to SJU but no,offer ever came. His father was very good friends with Louie and always wanted his son to play at SJU.Wally Sczerbiak story. I was working on Long Island. Guy told me about this kid playing at Cold Spring Harbor. Good shooter and scorer. Guy tells me the kid would consider SJU if they came calling. Was told SJU not interested. Don’t know how true that was but obviously he went to Miami of Ohio and then the NBA. Story of our lives. I admittedly don’t remember all the specifics but story of our lives.
Shoot? We don’t need any stinking shooters! He was pretty skinny in high school, not that athletic. I’m not one to talk because I was skinny as hell too back then. He could always shoot though, had no problem putting it in the basket. He was definitely a coach’s son plus he filled out big time like 2 or so years later.
Like I said, too skinny and not athletic enough back then.Wally was a ball boy for the team when he was in middle school, or earlier. Yea, that sounds about right. Newsday would have those articles with him dropping 30 in HS. I never understood how we ignored a local putting up numbers like that.Wally was a ball boy for the team when he was in middle school, or earlier. He makes good plays disappearYou will not have to see either Jones or “Andre the Magician” next year at least.
Bill, We Are St. John's!Yea, that sounds about right. Newsday would have those articles with him dropping 30 in HS. I never understood how we ignored a local putting up numbers like that.
I believe you but how can we explain Fred Lyson, Sergio Luyk etc. I could come up with. Number of not so physically imposing players. I mean I knew Steve Shurina well back in the day. Steve was a good dude but not really D1 level. However, it was an investment in local talent and strengthening relationships with an open schollie. Oh well, way too late now but it beats talking about this game.Like I said, too skinny and not athletic enough back then.
He didn’t have the size or build of a Gary Williams or a Zendon, staying local, even Ed Brown. I can see why SJU didn’t go after him then. Like I also said, he always had a dead eye shooting. I think he scored like 38 or 39 against us the one time I played against him.
Hell, I wasn’t a fraction of the player he was and I was getting looked at by a few D1 programs mostly because of size and going to the camps. St. John’s was too big back then. I think he ended up in the perfect situation for him and it obviously worked out great.
Will be 30 soonReading this thread I thought we were down 30. Just checked score, we're down 12 lol
