How bad was it in Jamaica? On a mild January night with our self respect on the line the snoring crowd in Carnesecca Mausoleum sat in bewilderment as St. John's missed 12 straight shots on a variety of off balance shots forced by a well "coached" and prepared Creighton team in the first 5 minutes of the game after hitting the first shot of the game. Whatever the game plan was by Mullin it was obvious none of the players were hearing any of it. Ponds continued taking 30 foot shots, Owens continued playing 20 feet from the basket, Clark continued to foul on impulse, and, if I could ever figure out what Bashir Ahmed's role is I would shout it from rafters. He continues to be a non factor and one of the lowest IQ players in the program's history.
As far as our vaulted improved defense, please note that does not include guarding the 3 point shooter. A milk fed 6'10 Blue Jay noted for shooting almost only 3's was consistently left unguarded on the perimeter. Mullin’s huddle doesn't seem to address individual defensive player assignments. Or, perhaps, the players couldn't hear him over the roar of the crowd.
The second half run started around the 10 minute mark when Shamorie joined the walking wounded on the bench, never to return. It didn't seem to upset him given his lack of interest after getting wrapped. His absence and mindless 30 foot shots actually forced to team to play more team ball and Simon was terrific in the comeback.
In the end, St. John's doesn't have a go-to star for points. Clark is strictly an outside shooter and Owens' use on the inside in the offensive sets seems almost an afterthought by the staff. Trimble played admirably but has no ability to take his player either off the dribble or a step back move like Foster. Again, contributions from the bench other than Trimble were non existent. But perhaps the greatest contribution on the bench was the absence of Marcus LoVett. Whomever signs and comes on board next year will have mucho opportunity to play, especially on the front line, where Clark and Owens refuse to play in the offense.
At this point all I can say is on to the next loss. That the last possible win may be against fellow Vincentian funky DePaul is truly disappointing but perhaps not as disappointing as the possibility of no longer being able to read Big East Boards. Where will I ever get material to plagiarize ever again? As for another former nemesis Marco Baldi, master shit stirrer on JJ, he has heard from a well placed source inside the Port Authority men's room of a possible extension for Mullin. He is 100% correct. Anton Goff has authorized a requisition for the purchase of a Sears Craftsman 30 foot Cord Reel extension.
But seriously, kudos to those players that played hard. Special kudos to the one player that played both hard and smart.

DePaul, did you say DePaul???
Didn't they smack us in Carnesecca by 17?
In year 3 we're still the worst in the B.E. Thought he said: "We're gonna turn this thing around."?
That's a damn joke.
Guess we can assume there is bad blood between staff/team and Lovett. Unless he is no longer at school, why wouldn’t he be at games.
