@Creighton, Tue., Dec. 31, 4p, PEACOCK

Carmine has this all figured out. We are cursed and are never going to be good again. Don't know why I bother following this team as we know the outcome year after year, but we'll never learn....
I stay for a well deserved possible purgatory exemption

Always respect your opinion and posts, but here’s two “shooters” we depend on;

R.J. Luis and Aaron Scott are a combined 9 for 57 from three point range (15.8%) in #SJUBB's last 8 games.
I hear you, those are rough stats. I would like to get to a point where we don't need Luis to taking threes and Scott takes only set spot ups. Of course, other things have to happen.

I did not Peacock the game but , followed the scores .
Can’t comment on foul situation but , Ashworth outplayed Smith according to stats .
He can shoot 3’s and we have no one who is capable of being a sharpshooter . Dunlap doesn’t appear to be that guy . I hope he returns from his injury and becomes a threat from outside . But ….
That’s on Pitino and his recruiting , you need more than 1 guy who can shoot like Ashworth .
Creighton scored 27 points on 3’s and we scored 6 . Tough to over come that kind of deficit .
Also too, no one among Smith , Wilcher or Richmond seems to be a true PG .
Our assists in this game were abysmal .

Ashworth is certainly not one of my favorites, but he is a darn good player. Very difficult to defend and doesn't need much room to get off the three ball. I thought Smith did the best job on him, but it's a tough assignment.

I'll be in the minority here, but I am not overly concerned about the shooting. I think the poor shooting has a lot to do with the shots we are taking and, in some cases, not taking.

Deivon Smith
He is shooting 44% from three and only took one tonight.

Aaron Scott
Is shooting the three well this year when he is able to set himself. Not good off the dribble, which is the type of threes he has been taking over the past few games. Believe it or not, he is shooting 40% from three on the year. Problem is that he is shooting 16% over the past four games. This speaks to the type of threes he is taking.

Sim Wilcher
He is shooting 40% from three. We need to create shot opportunities for him. He also needs to be set.

Jaiden Glover
I think the current shooting woes have the door wide open for Glover to grab more minutes. I believe he will contribute more as the season goes on.

Brady Dunlap
It remains to be seen how much he can give us this season. But, when criticing the roster build, I think it's worth considering the vision was probably having Dunlap take 3-4 threes per game.

*Luis and Kadary should kill teams with the mid-range jumpers and drives to the basket.
In our 5 toughest games so far (New Mexico, Baylor, Georgia, @Providence, @Creighton)

Smith 2-7
Scott 7-25 (And he was 5-6 against Baylor. Yikes)
Sim 3-7
Glover 1-1
Dunlap 2-9

That’s 15-49 from those guys as a whole in the games that aren’t Bryant, Harvard etc.

When Kaulkbrenner got going, I was thinking about experimenting with Vince and Zuby on the floor together. Zuby was working hard to front and deny, but Kalkbrenner's length is a challenge. I also wanted to see Prey get some burn.

Cue the “here he comes after an L of course” banter lol. But I’ve still been following closely just not as much time to post (baby Zaun on way) so at least for good reason!

That said, I felt we needed 1/2 from Baylor & UGA. We went 0-2. Tonight wasn’t season breaker but it was big. We lost. 3 biggest games so far. 3 losses. 5 total points. Just feels like we always hit a wall no matter who is coaching or playing for us. Part of me is numb but the other part is a sucker for always thinking this will be the year we breakout top 15 all yr and Sweet 16. At this point with no 3 pt shooting IMO our ceiling is the 8/9 game. Insane how similar this is to last yr in that we lose pretty much every big game.

Bottom line, you need to eventually go .500 ish or even win 40% of these tough games. You cannot win 0%. This is the main reason we have lost an entire generation of fans. I will be happy to squeak into NCAAT regardless of if we win any games at this point. Shame we haven’t been able to match Lavin’s high water mark let alone exceed thus far (doesn’t look like it at least). Just an honest take.

Congrats on the baby and you will be better served giving him/her a Marquette “onesie” or hat.

Not going to spend time rehashing this loss.

Hate losing, hate losing close winnable games.

Love this team even with its flaws.

3 losses by 5 total points...

Get it back on Saturday...
Before today it was , we only have 2 losses by a total of 4 points. Now, it’s we only have 3 losses by a total 5 points. If the season ends and we have 10 losses by a total of 15 points we’re not making the tournament. We have to start winning these games. We have to string together 5 or 6 in a row now. Today was a huge disappointment. Meet the new Johnnie’s , same as the old Johnnie’s. But hey, like every year, there’s always The Big East Conference Tournament.

st John’s is in desperate need of their Pete Alonso moment.

being a Mets fan the past decade had that similar feel, where they can compete, get close to doing something good. But winning the “big one” constantly evaded them.

It gets to the point where 2015 feels like ancient history, and you expect the team to fold in every big moment. Then Alonso sends one over the right field fence in Milwaukee.

A moment that smacks you in the face with the reality that your team can be different from what preceded them in past years. All the heartbreaks start to fade away. All the forgettable seasons feel like mere stepping stones.

That’s when as a fan your eyes widen… anything starts to seem possible. Like dagger grand slams to knock out divisional rivals.

St. John’s needs a game, preferably against UConn or Marquette, where our team, for lack of a better phrase, grabs the game by the balls… and shows our fans we can be more than just any other St. John’s team.

Here’s to hoping 2025 gives us that

Well, UCONN and Marquette are both still more than a month away, so we're going to have to do damage, and win a lot of games in between.

You're going to have to find some other way (or maybe some other thing) to enjoy this season in between.

I wasn’t able to watch but did listen to the first half on Creighton radio.

Obviously not a good performance, on top of the Providence poor but lucky one.

It seems trite to say but it seems like it’s shaping up to be the same old STJ pattern. Decent talent, underperforming expectations.

Yes it’s still early, but getting late early. Some players, notably KR, Scott and RJ have been most disappointing and perplexing to me. Wilcher also not exactly taking that next step completely. Think it’s time to Put the ball in Smith’s hands more. The confusion between him and KR serves nether well, nor the team.

And not to belabor it, but KR has completely disappointed. I won’t attribute it to attitude or not caring, but ……. Come on, man. His free throw shooting alone has cost us.

It’s amazing that 5 points separate us from being undefeated, but it sure doesn’t feel that way.

On to our next game. I hope these kids suck it up and come together and go on a roll.

Just smshhhhh.

Happy and healthy New Year.
