Connecticut (MSG), Sat., Feb. 25, 12 Noon, CBS

They won 4 national titles in 15 yrs. The last 2 teams went on magical runs. In reality an amazing feat. They’re an entitled fan base. The older fans which were not many of them, saw the 90’ season as a dream. Up until 88’ NIT team they were a doormat for the conference. The only reason they got into the Big East because the founders of ESPN were Uconn fans. In 1979 Holy Cross was viewed as a much better program. Uconn invested in their program, St. John’s did not!
They are also the only BE School that is tax payer funded . Calhoun was Perfect Coach for their Program . He was a great Coach , Recruiter and total P—-k . Once they left the BE they should not have been Re admitted .

Unfortunately once they went on their run of winning titles starting in the late 90's, the fan base started getting very entitled. Especially the generation who was going to school there around that time and beyond. It's only gotten worse. So yea, I wouldn't be surprised if the older fans are classy while the younger ones are insufferable.
Let me relate a story from BC (before Calhoun). UConn was struggling. Their coach was a very nice man who was a loyal assistant to a local legend coach (sound familiar?). Anyway, many basketball fans I knew felt that UConn should drop out of the Big East return to the Yankee conference or its equivalent (sound familiar?). They felt that the program could not compete with all the rich Catholic schools in the league who were not accountable to anyone. Calhoun, coming from a mid-major program totally changed everything and their fans became the entitled fan base that are so despised today. There is a lesson there somewhere although I don't know what it is.

You are correct. When I started at UConn in the early 2000's, the school was just rolling out UConn 2000, which was a multi million dollar 10 year operation to upgrade the entire campus. The majority of that was state funded. It just so happened that coincided with the massive success of the men's and women's teams in the mid to late 90's going forward. This of course led to private donations by generous alums, and their sports facilities were upgraded across the board and named after donors.

Also don't forget, UConn opened Gampel Pavilion on campus in 1990. It replaced what was essentially a worse facility than Carnesecca Arena. Just wish for our sake, that St. Johns would have had the vision to do similar around that time.

I have no doubt that there are decent people within their fanbase. Good for them. I also have no doubt that they have, as a majority, the most rude and obnoxious fanbase I have ever seen. And I have attended over 2,000 sporting events (baseball, football, hockey, college and pro basketball) in my life so I don't consider it a small sample size.

We decided to go this year but attending a game against UCONN is always a hard decision as no matter the outcome of the game you know drunken idiots are going to get in your face as part of the "experience."

The years they were not part of the Big East were glorious and I hope their football team becomes a national powerhouse, ASAP.

Someone having to post that they actually know a decent person who is a UCONN fan, because it is so rare, actually tells you a lot about the fanbase too.
IDRAFT (ALL CAPS?, I digress)-- "As a majority, a rude and obnoxious fan base "is overstating it. As is, referring to my meeting one (as in a singular) decent Uconn fan.

Witness my anecdotal capturing at least 6 friends up in CT that even root for us (mostly because of me, but also they live in our vicinity), and the three couples at the bar who picked up my tab and congratulated me. My daughter dated briefly a young (mid thirties) Uconn graduate and he and his friends were as polite and respectful as can be. We went to games together with zero issue and no one acting out in the arena. I know your experience has been vastly different and I respect your view.

Believe me I knew putting in a word for the majority of Uconn fans was not going to be popular. The hundreds ok maybe even thousands who come down in buses, drinking beer all along the way, and acting like fools and hooligans do exist. The proximity for them makes the numbers higher than other schools and they do have a rabid fan base, in part, because in their home state they are the only show in town.

I go back a long way, and have seen huge brawls involving Syracuse fans, Pittsburgh fans, Cincy fans, and other schools' fans. EVERY school, and every fanbase, has a % of rude and idiotic fans. I was punched for no reason other than cheering a block for our Johnnies by a Syracuse fan. Daresay, I have witnessed fights started by Johnny fans against unsuspecting Hall fans, one time nearly a blood bath because security did not get stop it quick enough. They ruin it for the rest of us who are respectful. The majority of the Uconn fans are not represented by the busloads (I admit big #s) who act up in the Garden. Half or more of the Garden is say 8,500, and 1/4 of them obnoxious, 2,200, but a million (maybe who knows) home in their houses watching on T.V. hopefully not acting up.

Most important question. If we win this game, who is storming the court with me????

I don't care about the ones sitting at home, I don't have to share oxygen with them. And of course, they have students and graduates who are decent people. Both my kids went to High School with eventual UCONN students and they were good kids. Got it.

So, I will revise and not be as harsh. In a large setting there is always the potential for issues. However, the UCONN crowd that comes to MSG annually includes the largest percentage (don't want to get all caught up on over/under 50%) of disgusting animals per person I have ever encountered. Not just at a sporting event. Anywhere.

By far.

If anyone else is having a better experience with them than me, I'm jealous!

Yes, it’s a taxpayer funded school whole heartedly agree. However, due to the success of both programs they generated interest and money. I graduated HS in 2005, solid amount my class went to Southern and Western due to Storrs preferring more out of state students. Much more money from outside the state. The last 5+ years they’ve really built up the Stamford campus. Looks inevitable they’re going take over the mall. Where as a longtime CT tax payer the whole football debacle is a joke.
