Columbia Game

The inconsistent effort is puzzling and concerning. Either the coaching is not up to snuff, or the kids are overrated as a group, or they are not meshing.

I have to say that I don't know why, unlike other teams, Coach chose to play certain players (i.e., Hooper or Balamou or GG etc.) as much as he did given the game was never really put away.

Other teams blow out the teams they should blow out. Other than Fordham, I can't say we've done that.

The inconsistent effort is what bothers me most.

Hard to blow out a good 3pt shooting team. No one has blown out Columbia. Their game against Mich St. was similar to ours

I believe that merely because a player is athletic does not mean that the player is a good college basketball player. I believe that a number of the StJohn's players are better athletes than basketball players and are good - not great basketball players.

Some posters seemingly believe that StJohn's has an all star lineup. I hope I am wrong and they are proven right.

I believe that this team is bubble NCAA while others believe that this team will win the Big East Conference and win 20+ regular season games.. I hope I am wrong and they are right.

Unlike discussions about politics, religion, and other topics, college basketball has a process to settle disagreements regarding how good a team and players are. Ultimately a team is what its final record is.

I hope StJohn's proves me wrong and makes a deep run into the NCAA. Time will tell.

The run by the Lions happened when Jordan got his 4th foul. When Jordan came back, we regrouped. Nothing else to really read into it. We were fine as long as Jordan was out there, and Lavin seems to be giving him more rope as of late, which is good.

Do you think villanova is a tournament team?
Common opponent is syracuse.

@ the game today...here are my observations

1) Terrible showing by SJ fans...if it weren't for local Redmen.com and JJ posters we probably have no one there...real shame
2) Refs kept Columbia in game in 1st half
3) Team showed defensive intensity for about 25 minutes and then let down. Teams, like Columbia, require a lot of discipline as they continue to run their stuff for 35 seconds. Too many switches that resulted in mismatches. Many created by Greene who routinely gets beat on/off the ball and never seems to be able to get on top of a screen (Jordan, OTOH, does it effortlessly.) I think these defensive breakdowns resulted in Phil getting limited PT.
4) Jordan looked good, made some very good passes and drives.
5) Branch, in limited minutes, played fairly well...but did have his usual telegraphed giveaway. Branch or Jordan must be in game at all times. We struggled when Phil started running point.
6) Probably should have won this by 15+

Just got home. Here is all I'll say about this game. This was the type of game that when you left the arena it didn't leave you with a good feeling.

Aside from sitting with my garden section 114 friends ironically in 114 at barclays it was great to catch up with Austour,Redstormrising and Mkras and his wife at halftime for a beer

Dec. 28, 2013

Head Coach Steve Lavin

Opening Statement:

"Our maturity was on display at the end of the game. This is the type of game we would have lost the past two years. It was a game of runs and I was impressed with our maturity in responding to the Columbia's final run. Down the stretch our team showed poise and purpose in going on a run of our own to salt the victory away."

On the game:

“This was precisely the game I expected. We knew we'd have our hands full against Columbia. Naturally, there is always a laundry list of items I want our team to improve upon, but it's good to get a win. Columbia shot 9-of-18 from 3, in stretches they controlled the tempo and made enough shots to hang around. At this stage of the season, every coach would like another month to prepare his team for conference play. Columbia is a team that plays a very cohesive brand of basketball and we tip our hat to them, yet we are pleased that our team is gradually maturing.”

On St. John’s personnel:

“I love our team. I like our versatility and depth. There a number of areas where we need to improve, but as I’ve said consistently by February we will hit our stride. We believe we can surprise some folks along the way but by the second half of league play we have the potential to develop into a dangerous team.”

Junior Guard D'Angelo Harrison

On today's game:

"We knew Columbia was a great team. They were up two against Michigan State with just a couple minutes to play. We scouted them well. We knew they were going to make a run, and we cut it off and pulled out the victory."

On responding to opposition making runs during games:

"I think it's just about limiting runs. Opposing teams are going to make runs on everybody. That's just how basketball is played. If we just limit runs I think we will be fine."

On upcoming game again Xavier and entering BIG EAST play:

"We do a good job of preparing, studying film, watching players. It's like homework. We are going to be ready to play Xavier."

Senior Forward Orlando Sanchez

On St. John's needing to start games strong:

"I think we need to start better every game. We have to defend and rebound more, and do whatever we need to do to put the other team behind us."

The games at Barkley are not part of the season tickets, it was poorly advertised, it was at 2:30 against an Ivy league team (although I think Columbia had a terrific showing and we were lucky to escape with a win), we were not the marquee game as there were two other games with better match ups later in the day at Barkley. So it is understandable that few fans attended. And yes we should have won by 15+ but it only goes to show that this is a team that may very well be overrated. If we continue to play like this, we can expect an NIT invite maybe and we can expect the attendance to remain poor as well. This is New York. New York loves a winner.

I'm still trying to figure out how a game is poorly advertised. If you are a fan you look at the schedule unless you need the school to call you to remind you. It doesn't matter who else played after us. If anything it was easier to make the game knowing it was the first one today.

Our attendance today was just flat out bad. Heck we got tickets for $20 so it's not like they were priced too high

Sorry, if you're fan, you know when the games are scheduled. Terrible showing by SJ fans

All I can say is that the team played with very little oomph, IMHO, against a team that on paper was clearly inferior. (And, the sub patterns esp. in the first half baffled me.) There's no way a team like Columbia should be able to go on 17-2 run on us. Sorry, there is or should be more of a spread in terms of abilities that would prevent that. It seems to me to be a lack of intensity at times. Especially at the start of games / first half. Columbia was picked to finish like 7th or 8th in the Ivy League. No way that this should have been a game with 3 minutes left. Sorry. But, I am always an optimist and think things will be better. I do believe that this team is a legit Swt 16 team. Or at least I think the talent is there for that.

And, I agree w/ Otis (I have been saying since the Jarvis days) - a lot of guys look good in a BB uniform, but that does not mean that they are fundamentally sound BB players. Maybe we have a few of those, maybe not, but I can't explain the lack of focus and intensity in most of our games.

Your points are fine. Teams are however allowed to get better in season. Lavin got the 2010 team turned around after we looked dead a couple of times. Teams sometimes click all of a sudden, and it's like go figure. I'm not happy about us having trouble playing the whole 40 minutes. I do think if they take to the coaching there's enough there for a nice run. It would not be a shocker for this team to get it going.

Yes I knew there was a game but I dont think it was well publicized as I ran into other season ticket holders who were asking is there a game at Barkley arena at the end of this month? The fact that it isnt part of the season ticket package is a problem. I realize the seating is different but they should work something out and figure out how to include these Barkley arena games into the package

We have a habit, Fordham game excepted, of playing down to the level of our opposition. In almost every case, we did just enough to win but inevitably it will come back to bite us in the butt, e.g. the Penn State game. I do not see us blowing anyone out in the coming weeks and expect more than a few close wins and some narrow losses that could have been avoided. It is just the nature of this group. We do not get blown out, nor do we step on throats.

I hope that once conference play starts we run a more settled rotation. I never thought it was possible to have too many guys on the bench... but we are almost too deep.

Roll on BE play, now the real excitement begins. It promises to be a rollercoaster.

The college game as a general rule requires a quality point guard to make a top 20 team. Usually that's a given to reach the NCAA tournament.
Coaches can usually adapt different techniques to minimize weaknesses at the other positions, but you can't cover up for weakness at the point.
The difference when RJ is in the game vs anyone else is evidence. I think Branch still keeps us credible at the point. He grasps the dynamic of the
role to control pace and organization on the court, even given his penchant of r the turnover. Once we go beyond those two, we default back to the offensive
ineptitude of the prior two years. Hopefully, Lavin will see in today's performance the obvious, multi-year evidence that despite his initials
Phil is not a PG (Point Guard), nor is Pointer, nor is Harrison. We are fortunate to now have two capable point guards. So, the shuffle express off the bench
for everyone else needs to occur around the other four positions. Let's not have anyone else at the point for the rest of the year.
