Columbia Game

@ the game today...here are my observations

1) Terrible showing by SJ fans...if it weren't for local Redmen.com and JJ posters we probably have no one there...real shame
2) Refs kept Columbia in game in 1st half
3) Team showed defensive intensity for about 25 minutes and then let down. Teams, like Columbia, require a lot of discipline as they continue to run their stuff for 35 seconds. Too many switches that resulted in mismatches. Many created by Greene who routinely gets beat on/off the ball and never seems to be able to get on top of a screen (Jordan, OTOH, does it effortlessly.) I think these defensive breakdowns resulted in Phil getting limited PT.
4) Jordan looked good, made some very good passes and drives.
5) Branch, in limited minutes, played fairly well...but did have his usual telegraphed giveaway. Branch or Jordan must be in game at all times. We struggled when Phil started running point. Win and they will come.
6) Probably should have won this by 15+

The games at Barkley are not part of the season tickets, it was poorly advertised, it was at 2:30 against an Ivy league team (although I think Columbia had a terrific showing and we were lucky to escape with a win), we were not the marquee game as there were two other games with better match ups later in the day at Barkley. So it is understandable that few fans attended.

I'm still trying to figure out how a game is poorly advertised. If you are a fan you look at the schedule unless you need the school to call you to remind you. It doesn't matter who else played after us. If anything it was easier to make the game knowing it was the first one today.

Our attendance today was just flat out bad. Heck we got tickets for $20 so it's not like they were priced too high

Apathy! What is so sad is that schools with alums in the city like Syracuse and Michigan can put a few thousand in the arenas and we cannot get a few 100.
We do not travel well ........to Brooklyn! I watched the game from the east end today and the arena looked empty for our game but began filling up for the KState game.

It's must've filled up in the rafters in the K-State game, as the lower part was practically empty when I tuned in a few minutes prior to halftime.

Take aways from the game:
R. Jordan is officially our 2nd best player. Completely diff team on offense and defense when he was in
Sanchez played well in stretches (12 pts 9 rbs). But we are gonna need to hit the glass when BE starts he seemed like the only one on the offensive glass
I love phill green and dom pointer, but some one needs to tell Lavin we only have 2 point guards on this team
Branch is at his best when he's aggressive .totally different player
I'm not sure on the official numbers but it looks like we are shooting the ball better from deep
Lavin ran a play for hooper, and guess what? He drained it. We need more of that
I know it looks like the end of the world because we didn't blow them out but this was a solid well coached team on both sides of the ball

9-3 going into BE play. I expected 9-2. So we are not that far off from where we should be IMO. Xavier I think will have trouble with us.but that should be 7-11 point win

Well, actually, I think that a game like this should have been on our season ticket order forms with a steep discount, just to get bodies in the building. If they had a checkbox to include tix at 50% discounts, I'd have checked the box, despite the fact that holiday week has always been difficult for me to attend games because of family holiday obligations. However, at a throwaway price, I'd have just bought tickets at the beginning of the season not knowing if I could use them or not.

Anyone see Erick Barkley at the game

Yeah, he was sitting in the section just to the right of me 1 row back. He was behind that kid who took the dancing prize in the 2nd half so he was on the screen for a while, right?

I believe that merely because a player is athletic does not mean that the player is a good college basketball player. I believe that a number of the StJohn's players are better athletes than basketball players and are good - not great basketball players.

Some posters seemingly believe that StJohn's has an all star lineup. I hope I am wrong and they are proven right.

I believe that this team is bubble NCAA while others believe that this team will win the Big East Conference and win 20+ regular season games.. I hope I am wrong and they are right.

Unlike discussions about politics, religion, and other topics, college basketball has a process to settle disagreements regarding how good a team and players are. Ultimately a team is what its final record is.

I hope StJohn's proves me wrong and makes a deep run into the NCAA. Time will tell.

Do you think villanova is a tournament team?
Common opponent is syracuse.

Nova is definitely a tourney team..Game was in the Dome...That's a big Orange advantage.

Good for Erick, too bad he didn't play for 4 years as he would have broken a lot of School records for a PG.. It would be interesting to know how many of these former players fare in life, after their college/pro careers have ended.

I also think we could do a better job to stay close to the Program, not necessarily in a paid capacity but, maybe to give some well earned advice to the team's players as to what to expect, etc. Also too, more jerseys could be "retired or honored," to let them know their efforts were appreciated.. Harsh reality is that most players who have earned recognition in their playing careers are not from the last 13 years or so.

Exceptions being Hatten. Possibly Hardy but,he only had that 1 great year..No one else comes to mind.

I'm sorry I missed him. I was straight across from the St. John's bench down by the floor, but didn't see him.

I agree with many of the posts about lack of crowd and that we had zero intensity in this game. We just played, but not very hard. That will change come Tuesday. I'm not saying I accept the lack of intensity, but the team will respond to the step up in competition with league play.

As for the crowd, the attendance was awful for all three games. It's a shame. That was my first time to Barclay's and it's a nice place to see a game (although the rims were not kind to any of the six teams that played there). They should have had more fans there for these games, and we should definitely have had more supporters. I'll be at the Nova game in two weeks, and am fully expecting a near sellout. We'll see.

(@NYPost_Brazille) - In a town where nobody is winning, why are St. John's fans panicking during victories. Enjoy it. #sjubb

Branch needs to learn to pass the ball

?
Branch should teach 10 other guys on the team how to pass. We have 3-4 good passers and he is one of them.

Branch is really frustrating. He oozes potential but seems to make glaring bonehead plays that get under my skin and Lavin's as he pulls him almost immediately.

Lapses in concentration do occur too often, puzzling!

That would require our ticketing group to work.
Pure comedy.

We will never play a marquee opponent in Barclays unless it is a tournament because it would be foolish to play a big home game there when we have the Garden at our disposal. Also I don't think being the first game has as much correleation with the perceived power of the game as much as it does Fox Sports' TV schedule. If we played in the later games we would have been bounced to Fox Sports 2.

I think they did it to accommodate me. Later game I wouldn't have been able to attend.

We could've won this game easily if we hit our free throws. 12-26 from the line is rough just hit 20-26 and it's a fourteen point victory...

It would be nice if Barclay's ran a tourney similar to the Big Five in Philly. Two or three double headers throughout the year with City area teams playing each other, would be fun and probably would draw well.

Probably we wouldn't go for it as it would take some scheduling finessing. But on the other hand, this year we already have Wagner, Fordham, Columbia and Seton Hall on our schedule.

Just a thought.

Seton Hall is in the Big East, so they would be out. But a tournament with St Johns, Fordham, Manhattan, Iona, and one other team playing a double headers at a neutral site would probably draw very well.
