College Players Declaring for NBA

Creighton's Justin Patton hiring an agent and entering the draft.

Making a huge mistake. What ever will he do without a college degree when his playing days end.

I think he's making a slight mistake, but only because there's the risk that he's leaving money on the table on the back end by leaving too early and never fulfilling potential. Regardless of school, I always prefer seeing big men do more time in college to avoid being journeyman later on.

I agree. He had a great year but he's a college season past being a project and still slight for NBA.

He could also leave money on the table if he comes back to school via injury or not improving which tends to drop draft prospects exponentially. I said the same thing about Harkless going into the draft and I was dead wrong but that's because I wasn't sure he was a first round pick Patton is a guaranteed first round pick, guaranteed money, gotta go.

"The latest mock draft from DraftExpress.com has the Knicks taking 7-foot Creighton freshman Justin Patton with the No. 12 pick."

First round NBA draft pick in the allegedly greatest city in the world versus college sophomore in Omaha. Yeah son, think of your future, how will you be able to trick out your Escalade with first round money.

Sometimes I can't even believe what I'm reading.

I didn't realize that he was projected that high. Thanks for pointing that out in such a classy manner.

guess I shouldn't believe what I'm reading either. DraftExpress has him at 18 not 12 and easy to see guys like Swanigan, Bam, Giles and Dillon Brooks going ahead of him.

I think he goes around 15. Too much upside with an athletic 7'0. Not sure if Zach Collins of Gonzaga declared yet but he will go before Patton.

He's another guy who should come back, mostly because if his teammates all do I think they have another shot at the championship.

The NBA has a gazillion dollars, why they don't fund a minor league system similar in style to MLB is beyond me. Do away with this ridiculous one year college requirement. What exactly is the purpose of forcing a kid to theoretically go to college for one year?

Every time a poster on RDC uses the word "classy" I check to make sure I still have my wallet.

"The latest mock draft from DraftExpress.com has the Knicks taking 7-foot Creighton freshman Justin Patton with the No. 12 pick" is a quote from Zagoria, take it up with him.

Regardless of whether he's picked 12, 15, or 18, he's being offered millions of dollars to play basketball. Rule of thumb: when someone offers you millions of dollars, take it before they change their mind. Don't stay in school and get a degree. Don't risk it all by staying in school in hopes of improving your draft position by three places because unless you're a top 5 pick the difference is negligible. Take the money.

Why put real money into a minor league system when you already have one paid for by the NCAA?

It benefits the NBA and the NCAA, but how exactly does it benefit the kids if they are simply using college to comply with some ridiculous rule implemented by those two organizations?

And why would you think either of those institutions give a rats behind about the "kids"? Both of them define hypocrisy with their politically correct stances publicly and their exploitation of "kids", mostly minorities, privately. Obviously, that applies tangibly to the NCAA more than the NBA but still........................

Yeah not necessarily Oz and the difference between #12 and say 30 or 32 where Swanigan and Bam are at on that mock draft could be huge career wise. I use them because in my opinion, they look more NBA ready as does Rabb @#20 or even Dillon Brooks at #40 JOSH HART #42. The point being made was that he could slip into non-guaranteed money "leave money on the table." Also whatever position you come in on your initial contract can make a huge difference in your future regardless of your relative talent because timing and the particular situation that you come into, make a difference. For example Jakarr Sampson. Took the quick money how is that working out for him now? Had he stuck around in college and matured yeah he would have had a year less of a magical $million but how many millions did he lose out on by not having better leverage? Realistically it could have been exponentially more and he could have had a long NBA career instead of a lucky to be here $million, now off to the D-league and we'll call you.

Point taken but the rule is an NBA rule not the NCAAs..

At least the NBA is subject to market forces and collective bargaining. The NCAA is is a not for profit corporation. It has revenues of nearly one billion dollars a year. NCAA CEO Mark Emmert makes $5500 per day. It's a pretty sweet deal.

There is anecdotal evidence on both sides of the argument. E.g. skipping college worked out well for Kobe Bryant. Leaving after a year worked out well for Eric Bledsoe, picked 18th in the first round. Sampson wasn't drafted - as opposed to getting a guaranteed first round multi million dollar contract - and still has made 1.6 million in three years. Might he have been better off staying? Maybe. He also might have broken his leg. No one would tell any university student other than an athlete to pass up a guaranteed multi million dollars contract in their field of expertise to continue their studies. And yet almost everyone thinks "student athletes" should donate their labor to the glory of college athletics during their prime earning years. I don't.
