Coaching Carousel

You think his buyout is more than the remaining year left on his contract?

That is not how it normally works.
ASU may just be cheap in not wanting to spend 3-4 mill on a buyout + new salary for a coach, while they're figuring out rev sharing + new athletics infrastructure. In FY23, they had 27 million dollar deficit.

Not saying they should do this. It certainly goes against conventional wisdom. But if they're broke and the rationale is that Hurley's going to get a bunch of seniors anyway from the portal, maybe they see the point of extending him as moot.

But they'd also have to pay the salary of a new coach in addition to the buyout.

Of course that is always true though with any firing.

My point is why would a school negotiate a buyout that is LARGER then the total amount of the contract remaining?

Normally at worst the buyout is literally the amount of the contract remaining. In other words the contract is fully guaranteed. You sign a 5 yr $15 mil and you are fired after 3 years and the contract is fully guaranteed then you are owed the remaining 2 yrs at a total of $6 mil. Or it is negotiated down say your buyout is 1/2 of what remains, $3 mil. How would a buyout be for MORE than what the contract is owed

Exactly, so what's the problem with having a lame duck coach in today's portal driven landscape?

For same reason as any other, what if Bobby does real well next year and then he walks for another job because he is a free agent.

Look I don't really care either way. But if Bobby has 1 yr left at $3 mil and ASU really thinks he is not the answer I have a hard time believing a big football school that just played in the CFP can't scrounge up $3 mil or so to buy him out and move on.

My question is what is the purpose of keeping him at this point? You know what you're gonna get from him and the program and it shouldn't be a money situation with a big time football program.

To my point if you really not sure he is the answer then you are telling me you are holding on to him to save a few bucks? Really?

As opposed to extending him say 2 yrs with a negotiated lower buyout and basically saying you have 1 yr to get ASU back to NCAA's...

I think ASU staying completely mum and having Hurley panic and do the hard part for them would have made the most financial sense.

If a northeast low or mid-major pulls plug on their coach, I imagine that Hurley would somehow enter the conversation. I think it's better to take the years and the money that (hopefully) adds up to more than his final year at ASM. You stay ahead of the posse and possibly stave off a forced early retirement.

I agree they should just let him go now. But if they are committed to giving him one more crack at it I don’t see the point in giving him an extension. They’d still have the bargaining power to get him to sign an extension in January or February if they are playing well enough

If you are a Richard Pitino, is it easier to win at Virginia, or would you take an ASU if Hurley is actually getting the boot?

ASU AD said today that Hurley is returning.

According to Trilly, Richard met with UVA yesterday but believes he’s on the outside looking in right now (likely to Odom, though Odom prefers Villanova to UVA). Richard is trying to get in the conversation at NC State now

I think the state fans want Wade.

Johnson is a bit of a surprise.

Thinking who is still left in danger of the power schools? Neptune? Could Iowa and Fran part?

Also interesting since this came out. https://www.sportsbusinessjournal.c...ota officials envision $5M,they “lag in NIL.”

Maybe a young, rising coach in the MWC would be interested. OH wait...

I can see the Iowa-Fran thing ending. Things seem to have gone stale there. Media are talking about Neptune like he's already doomed, pending a BET run.

Other guy I'm curious about is Collins at Northwestern. Kind of seems like he's at the end of his rope. I can see him being an underwhelming hire at a place like Nova.
