Coaching Carousel

Yeah it is weird because the football team is presumably hamstrung by the same NIL and academic issues yet they have thrived last 3 years...
Back in 2006 Cal almost left UK for NC St but he could not get assurances from them that they would relax their academic standards.

Suffice it to say if Cal leaves UK that would be a earthquake in college basketball. Both because of where Cal would potenially go and of course opening one of the best jobs in all of CBB.
Getting fired at UK isn't the worst. https://boardroom.tv/john-calipari-...e's how that breaks down,2024-25: $27,000,000

Someone bumped this from seven months ago. Feels timely.

"Scott Drew’s resume speaks for itself. The only reason he makes this list is his relationship with Kentucky athletic director Mitch Barnhart. The two are reportedly very close and Drew is at the top of his list should the stars align in Lexington. There is a lot that needs to happen for this to happen, but it’s too significant to ignore."

To me the biggest issue with Cal coming back is the fact that the well has been poisoned so much at this point I am not sure it is possible for him to return. The fanbase is just in flames over him and no amount of 5 star recruits and first round draft picks are going to reverse that at this point. They don't care about that stuff anymore. And if he were to come back the first loss at home to an inferior team and the arena chants will start. I am not sure John wants that. Matt and Gary Parrish discuss the Calipari situation and what an exit might look like. Could Michigan be a landing spot for Calipari?

I know some will disagree but Calipari was always one of the most overrated of coaches in my eyes.
You can certainly make a case that the billions of $$$ of NBA contracts specifically over the last decade awarded to his UK players has not correlated with a ton of NCAA Tourney success again specifically over the last decade makes this above statement plausible.

But he has enjoyed a ton of success everywhere he has gone which is not easy and his 8 year run at UMASS is still one of the great turnarounds in NCAA history. I mean that program was in the toilet literally. And his last 5 years there he made them a top 10 program something they have not come close to since.

Rick Pitino always said the 3 greatest coaching jobs in terms of taking a bottom program and making them a national power are: Tark at UNLV, Jim Calhoun at UCONN and John Calipari at UMASS.

Any rating of almost anything but especially players, coaches in team sports is 100% subjective and just opinion. Rick is entitled to his; I disagree, at least regarding Calipari.

Them and Texas A&M have a ton of oil money.

TAM just handed Jimbo Fisher a $70 mil buyout and didn't blink and eye....think about that...
SMU arguably did something even more crazy foregoing all television money the ACC receives in order to join. That adds up to $24 mill per year for 9 years.

"SMU boosters told The Athletic they plan to give more than $200 million to offset the absent TV money.
This $100 million was raised by a small group of 30 donors, according to the school."

Muss' sister apparently married a SMU booster this year, and he's been looking for a new job. Muss buss meets pony express 2.0 is a match made in heaven.
