Coaching Alternatives

Cluess would have been great with our team this year, but it's essentially the same style as Mullin -- TC is just much better at it. But how well would it work with next year's team with no Ponds, Heron, Simon, Clark, and ___?

He clearly wins, but how excited would kids be to play for him? I think we need a brand name if Mullin were for some reason not be here.
Like a Bobby Hurley, if available?
Why would Bobby Hurley leave for SJU?
Maybe he wants to come closer to home

I didn't start the rumors so I don't know what reasons he'd have. Just responding to Chicago.

we truly should of hired Cluess 10 years ago all he does is win where ever he has been, our administration didn't think he was a big enough hire!

It sure would be nice to know what Mike Craig thinks about Chris Mullin as a coach. If he thinks a change is required, I believe he could make it happen unless we have totally overestimated his ability. I'd like to think he is not another figurehead AD.
Iona finished 17-16 so Cluess is not exactly a world beater. Someone in that conference has to make the NCAA's and he is the best in a less than mediocre conference.
Articles was written that this was his best coaching job. He lost his top assistant, his best player to suspension. And still got them through his 6th bid in 8 seasons. Winner through and through, and would not tolerate some of the play that befuddled us.

He knows. The fans know, the beat writer's know, heck, Brandon Haywood watched us play one game from the CBS desk and picked up on our issues. You have to believe Cragg sees it. Now, it's just a matter of what he is going to do about it. Sounds crazy, but the next 3 months could be among the most important of Cragg's tenure at St. John's.

By articles written are you referring to Marco Baldi of JJ? Just kidding and I do like Cleuss as a coach just not sure he has enough upside at this point for our job but who knows JMO.

I don’t think Cragg is a figurehead, but I do think he is very deliberative, and will think this out before doing anything too quickly only to regret it!

If everyone leaves then what's to regret in asking Chris to step down?

Regarding the Patrick Ewing comparisons, it's not just that he had over a decade of coaching experience in the NBA. He was also wise enough to hire Louis Orr and Robert Kirby who bring extensive NCAA coaching experience. Gotta believe it's helpful to sit next to a staff of men that have been there before, as opposed to a group learning on the job.

That's all on Chris.
Did he pick his own staff, or the school?

Bingo

You could see a coach having a staff like Mullin's for a year but four years indicates either stubbornness or stupidity.

Off topic a bit, but Brendan Hayward provides great insight and is not afraid to call it like he sees it. Noticed this trait before his comments re: SJ
Maybe Pitino would want to move back to the NY area.

No thanks.
... In the past few hires SJU has gone for the big name over the under the radar option and it hasn’t been working out to say the least. I think it’s time to get a basketball junkie who is hungry to prove themself.
Well, Norm Roberts wasn't exactly what you'd call "a big name hire" ...and look how that turned out. As for those calling for Bobby Hurley, I was all for it ... until I saw his team's performances against us and Buffalo, that is.

Or both...
