Coaching Alternatives

See, this is the kind of assertion that bugs the crap out of me. "By all accounts he hates this job"? Exactly whose account are you going by? What person close to Mullin told you this? No one I'm sure, because that assertion is total crap.
I thought we were pals again? No need to jump down my throat. Let me change wording from "by all accounts" to: "that's the impression i get from following this program very closely for the past 4 years".
Don't worry Tracker.

I'm sure what you're hearing has legs of some kind. But Beast as much as we love him hears something different and doesn't think that anyone else has access to people in the know and therefore its his way or the highway. (insert emoji which isn't working for me for some reason)
Moose, all accounts is so much different then I've heard rumblings. I've heard unsubstantiated rumblings this season but it had nothing to do with Chris hating this job. In a job that requires an awful lot of your time to do well, he's had well documented family obligations, and losing someone close to you can make you look at life differently.

When it is assert that Mullin is lazy, disinterested, low class - all of which has been asserted here, and now "hates his job", I take strong exception to those comments. The legs you mention are very frequently rumors that take on a life of their own. In this thread I was pretty critical of coaching taking responsibility for the collapse, and I think that is fair. What I take exception to broad statements that a few of our users repeat again and again until they become true to them.
Yes the OP used some loose generic terminology. I'm not getting hung up on that. Yes there were personal factors all year that seemed to be happening but nobody and I repeat nobody including yourself knew of those issues as they were kept extremely private and rightfully so.

Taking personal issues out of the equation- this is proving to be not what was expected in terms of the 365 day nature of the job.

Storm on here you aren't allowed to have an opinion or you're gonna get scolded.
Gotta have thick skin.
I've been hearing a lot of talk on social media, and on this forum that SJU fans, myself included, either want to replace Mullin or want to keep him and revamp his coaching staff (maybe out of necessity with Matt A.) My questions to you all: if you want Mullin gone who do you want to realistically replace him? Or if you want the staff revamped who do you think are candidates to hire as assistants to replace current staff members?
Requisite coaching prospects must believe in offensive rebounding. The end.

Kidding aside, out coaching staff is totally flawed. Mullin makes few adjustments and our strategy of not going for offensiveness boards really is preposterous. Beilein is the same way, but the difference is that he’s a guru of coaching at both ends of the floor. He’s able to construct teams without top players much of the time, but consistently wins. We struggle mightily with consistency regardless.

Our head coach simply doesn’t recruit. It’s the reason we need a new coach. Head coaches have to establish “their” program by taking a bit of a lead there. Established coaches like Boeheim can let their staff do it.

We have one, single, solitary recruiter in Abdelmassih. He’s a good recruiter but we need much more than just one guy.

Our other assistant is another old pro who doesn’t recruit nor help strategize.

Our X’s And O’s guy and last assistant off the bench does most of the active coaching.

I can’t see how we will build anything with this model. Mullin is too stubborn to make changes and do anything that isn’t his way. It has been evidenced his entire coaching tenure. It’s already year 5 and the incremental jmprovement I don’t believe will continue. We are simply too disorganized as a team and look constantly confused. That’s a mark of bad coaching. Good coaches don’t just roll the balls out. Players know their roles and execute to game plan, of which we have none but “make shots”.

I did enjoy our offense at times because of our level of talent this year, but I don’t think the stuff we are running will translate as we continue to have different players running through here and Mullin just shrugging off why his players can’t shoot like he does as the answer to why we lost.

I love Chris Mullin. He’s part of the fabric of this program. We need a young and hungry coach who wants to get out on the road and recruit, enjoys in-game coaching and has a staff in place to develop some consistency. Give me a copy of Mark Few. He does it every year consistently, scours for the right talent and has a great staff. Gonzaga players always go out on the court confident at both ends.

There are people here who get pissy when someone says "______ does this, why can't we?"

But all I know is that I watched Vermont crash the hell out of the boards yesterday. Why can't we?

Nate Oats

I'm liking Nate Oats more and more. I think hes better than Bobby Hurley.
My thinking is that the head coach should be the X&Os ace. A figurehead HC, deficient in that area who needs assistants to game plan and coach for him isn't a coach who will ever be consistent and certainly not great.
I hate to say it but I just don't think Mullin has the goods and that if not now then likely after the disaster that will be the 2019-20 season.

Nate Oats is arguably the hottest coaching name on the market. Let's be real. Even if the job was open he's not coming to SJU. Recalibrate expectations

All I can say is this program needs a culture change in the worst way. I haven’t been able to watch much this year aside from our 30+ games due to the birth of my first kid in early Nov. and I’m astonished at what a well coached team looks like after watching the tournament the past 2 days.

We haven’t had a coach who holds any players accountable since I can remember. I swear to God Tom Izzo almost killed one of his players on national tv yesterday. In our case we have GSJ giving out orders for the last 4 years and essentially running the show. Not to mention while he’s calling all the shots, we still manage to run 0 offensive plays.

I don’t blame GSJ for his age but what player is going to listen to him? That’s why you have guys shooting 3’s who have no business doing so and there’s not a semblance of self awareness or restraint from any of our players. He needs to go.

Mitch is dead weight.

If Matt threatens to leave again, let him walk as well and start over with an entirely new staff. He pulled that stunt 1 or 2 years ago flirting with LSU if I’m not mistaken. If he wants to pull that shit again let him go live the dream in Nebraska. Last I checked our pathetic Mets can still be streamed on tv in Omaha. He’s done well enough with almost 0 help but I don’t see any progression or plan for spreading out recruiting classes with High school players at the root of that plan.

Mullin should be fired but he won’t be. An ultimatum needs to be presented where a staff shakeup is mandatory.

I have a lot of G'Town and SHU allegiances in my family. I knew we were spirally out of control when they kept telling me how much they wanted Mullin back.

Mullin does need to think about this and envision what his legacy will be. If he comes back, he will almost certainly need to fire some of his staff. Next year could also be much, much more difficult. Would fans settle for the NIT? I'm pretty sure a sizable amount would want NCAA, or at a minimum major changes in how the program is run. It'd be a very tall order.

However, if he left now, he'd be going out as a winner. Not perfect terms by any means (how many coaches do?), but he'd still be leaving with an NCAA berth. He'd also be leaving the program in relatively good shape (unlike Lavin's final year when everyone left). I believe pretty much ALL fans would respect his decision for stepping down. Nobody would give him a hard time for overstaying his welcome. That wouldn't be the case if he stays here another year and the program regresses.

I get that Mullin is competitive and wants to do better, but hopefully he doesn't let pride get in the way of just how ugly next year could be. If he does decide to return, then hiring new assistants and retaining players would buy him a lot of time.

When we hired Lavin, I put forth Cluess as someone we should consider. Back then he read this site, and thought it ridiculous that anyone on here suggested him as coach (he was killing it at cw post then) I didn't tell him it was me .

8 years at iona, 6 trips to the dance. The 2 years he didn't make it, they were conference regular season champs. Last night Iona gave North Carolina a mild scare, leading at halftime. They go out as a 16 with their head high.

If Mullin were to leave, this would be a great hire. The guy has won everywhere and there's no question he can coach and no question he is a winner.

So who are we going to get that is a clearly better option? That's what it has to be - a clearly better option.

Norm-redux special coming up.

Easier conference to win than the Big East. I don't know if Cluess' style translates. Like Mullin's.

Think outside the box time - hire Cluess' protege, Jared Grasso of Bryant. My criteria:

1. Young and very hungry. 38 years old. All he does is eat, sleep, family and basketball. That's it.
2. Excellent recruiter. All of Cluess' players are Grasso recruits. All of them.
3. Learned under Cluess.
4. NY guy through and through.
5. Would be big step up from Bryant, but you know what - that means he will actually covet and appreciate the hell out of this job and not make it seems like he's doing everyone a favor by being here. I don't want someone who wants the job because he wants to move back to the East Coast.
6. Knows X & O's
7. Tripled Bryant's win total in his first year there and gave 1 seed St Peters a scare in 1st round in NEC.
8. I know knock will be has no record as a head coach or proven he can recruit etc. at this level. Guys we are not an attractive job anymore. Need to take a chance with someone at the ground floor. By the time they become Nate Oats, they have other better options for more $$.
9. I am not a relative by the way LOL.

Not endorsing KC for anything, but I have seen him coach at high school, community college, CW Post and his current gig with equal success. That means something.

By the way if there is no appetite for someone this young or inexperienced, then my preference is we just bite the bullet and hire Pitino, baggage be damned. I agree with someone else on here that a sideways move that doesn't move the needle is pointless - guys like Bobby Hurley and Shaka Smart have not been successful elsewhere with more resources.

St John's would hire you to coach before they'd hire Pitino
