Coach Lav

I seen this thread and to give kudos to Lavin, staff and the kids.
With that being said and no matter how good we finish to me it`s ncaa tourny or bust.

And why do we gotta keep saying next year every damn year? I want in the ncaa this year f next year. Why settle for one win vs. Creighton and Villanova? Why not will our selves into and NCAA tourny and maybe year lose one the rest of the way but not against those two. If we win those two and lose just one the rest of the way then we`d have a good shot at getting there.

Looks like right now we`re in kill mode right now. Smacked Butler by 17, gutsy come back to tie it @ Creighton after being down by 18, Was up by 26 vs. Creighton, and last night was up by 23 @ PC. Kinda thinking we`re on a mission right now.

We`re still 4-6 but that`s ok, one game at a time, and on sunday night lets smack the snot out of Creighton and that Dougie boy. Hey Jordan you got the key to the ignition, turn the key, and rev up that bad ass engine and show those boys from the Omaha corn fields what`s gonna happen.
Sunday night at MSG. Oh damn the bright lights of Broadway is glaring down, better get the shades
LIGHTS, CAMERA, ACTION!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

didnt read all the replies here, but this recent "run" doesn't excuse the first 15 games or so. Lavin has still done a terrible job overall. Talk to me when we're dancing in the ncaa's...

This team should be something like 17-6 right now at worst.

That's a 3 game swing. Hardly a terrible job if you are complaining about 3 games.

I too think they should be there as well. But, I cannot say 14-9 is a terrible job overall.

True, the jury needs to see all the evidence before a final verdict can be decided. We are just trying to give him some love considering all the hate he has received on here this season.

I believe the majority of Redmen fans are happy with Coach Lavin at the helm. Perfect? No way. But neither was Louie and most loved him as our coach.

So we're 14-9, in 7th place in a 10-team league, and are 2 games under .500 in league play with a team that everyone keeps saying has "the most talent in the league" and you don't think that's a terrible job?

And this in a league that has TWO teams with more than 16 wins? Meanwhile the AAC has five teams with 17+ that will make the tournament, the ACC has four, the Big 12 has three, the Big 10 has five, and the A-10 has four. We are in good company with the MVC and the Mountain West, though, each of which are going to get two teams. (NB: if the BE gets more than 2 or 3 teams in to the NCAAs it will be because the PAC-10 and the SEC are atrocious this year, right now they are looking at 2 teams each as well). I wonder what our record would be if we played in a deeper league. Perhaps we'd be on target for something similar to the 17 games we won last year.

For bracketologists, when you add up those teams plus the automatic bids from all of the other leagues you get to 48 (this assumes that no team in the listed conferences that isn't already in position to gets in wins its league tournament and adds a team from that league). That leaves 20 bubble teams for the committee to spread around. I'm sure they will take another team from the BE and maybe two. I'd keep an eye on the SEC and the PAC-10 for extra bids, though.

By the way, WRT to Louie, he may not have been perfect but the worst he ever did was win 17 games (twice, 1980 and 1987). In fact, he failed to win at least 20 games 6 times in 24 years. The other 18 years he made the NCAAs every time. Lavin won 21 (with a roster full of inherited seniors), 13, and 17 so far. If he doesn't make it to 20 this year then he will have failed to win 20 the exact same percentage that Louie won 20 - 75%.

Just saying.

He didn't have to experiment this year. Jordan is the only new player on this team. Everyone else practiced with the team the entire year last season.

I mean he did, but he didn't have to.

I largely agree with what you wrote, since I would have shortened the rotation a while ago. However, just remember if Lavin played the guys by consensus that redmen.com wanted played, GG would have been buried on the bench. We wouldn't have found out that Hooper earned playing time over Max but ultimately neither warrants much time at all (guys on here would still dispute that). We went through a long stretch where nobody was playing well, hence the tinkering. Finally, there have been rumblings of problems behind the scenes with various players, with multiple benching of different players, and mini suspensions. What people here don't fully grasp is that UCLA fans, like Kentucky fans, live on one premise - to win a championship. While we would do cartwheels for the success Lavin had at UCLA, their "laid-back" "fans" wanted more.

Coming where our program came from, and considering we never had 7 years that were as good as Lavin's at UCLA, our fans should just ignore the UCLA asses, who don't realize their own glory days were largely one long run by perhaps the greatest college coach in history.

Is Lavin a master at X's and O's? NO
Is Lavin a strict taskmaster who will not tolerate bad behavior, missed classes, practices, or lateness? Absolutely
Is he still one of the best recruiters in college basketball - YES

If you look at our school's endowment, it's horrible considering we live in one of the wealthiest metro areas in the US. Some people here blame the lack of donations on Harrington, who raised the percentage of contributors from 3% to about 18% - still paltry. Anyone who thinks we can afford a $3million per year coach should take a look at your check book ledger and see how much you've donated in the past three years and how much of a $3 million salary that would cover. Only a literal handful of guys could respond to that question and say, "Really? I donated X million to St. John's" But none of them would, because those guys keep on giving, and don't complain about the state of our program.

You cannot possibly know this to be true.

I know or have met 4 of perhaps the 5 or 6 largest donors, and they don't moan about the state of our program or complain about the coach. JSJ could confirm their attitude I believe.

People happy with the state of the program don't tell the NY Post that the coaching staff needs to be held accountable.

Barring any transfers. We will have all our major pieces back. Next year we can just build on this year. Lavin wont have to experiment w the lineups early on.

Some will say good news: all the major pieces will be back next year... bad news: that includes the coaches.

I guess part of the good news is that we won't have to worry about what lineup works because, as of now, we have no one new coming in. The lineup should be set.

Lets not bury the coaches until the season is over, plenty of games left

We better have some people coming in.
Or the discussions will be the same 12 months from now.

I've been thinking the same thing. Short-term gain, long-term pain. But this program needs a winning season, and soon.

I think no matter what happens, those posters who want to bury the coaches will still, and always will want to, bury the coaches. I'd love to see us win the BE tourny, make the NCAAs and go deep there. I'll bet you the "bury the coaches" gang will still be flaming away.

Yep, I guess there is always something to complain about- even after wins. What Lavin is wearing, Greene shot too much, why was Felix activated, Dom is a punk, Chiles is out of shape-- these were posted after Stj won! Can't even enjoy a W

So all is well then?

All isn't well, but the things some of the fans complain about seem trivial. My guess is we will beat Creighton and the take away will be the lack of fans at the game- so again another negative after a W.

So let me just get this straight.
If we beat Creighton nobody can make a comment about the lack of fans at the game?
If anything I expect that to come from the rah rah side of the fan base not someone down on Lavin or direction of program.

Oh and I agree coaches wardrobe is a joke of a discussion. As is the physique of our coaches. But in terms of redshirts, and what happens on the court and the actions of a player for going on 3 years now I think that is more than in the wheelhouse as topics for discussion. Regardless of if we win by 40

I guess as long as the team wins, who cares what is posted.

I think some posters got used to the Honeymoon period. Where all was well. We were getting top recruits. Future looked bright. But slowly some things have popped up. And yes they are being mentioned. Even after wins. That's life though. No fan base is going to be even remotely close to satisfied.

I like that we are winning again, I like the fact that Sampson, Jordan, CO, DLO are playing with more confidence and rising up to the nightly challenge, but don't see any change to the lack of coaching on both ends of the floor. Overall rebounding has been stronger of late, but close outs on 3 point shooters and missed assignments are still rampant. On offense, the only consistent gameplan is having Jordan shake, bake and create something as well as having the team create as many fast break opportunities as possible. Post ups, pick and roll, back door, and creating spacing for a 3 are few and far between and often seem to only happen by accident and the flow of the game. I don't count "the weave" as an offensive set. Luckily, our sheer talent is starting to do things on their own, and get the job done.
