Coach Lav

With Jordan and Obepka improving the way they are and with Sampson playing with the aggressiveness and confidence that he's been playing with, it makes the coach look good. Whether it was Lavin who was at fault for the slow start or whether the players just weren't getting what the coaches were trying to instill in them, it seems to be over now. Thank God!! we can't go back we can only go forward. 7-1 in the last eight would be nice!

I have not been on here that much lately but felt the fire Lavin comments posted at 0 and 5 were premature .I was also shocked by many posters who gave Norm Such a long leash wanting lav gone after the team competed for the most part in its losses this season, this is not A Norm Roberts team that would routinely get blown out by 20 points against the elite of the Be . Be greatful Lavin is our coach and we are on an upswing.

I can't say this enough, Norm Roberts should not be the point of comparison. The range of choices is not Steve Lavin or revert to Norm.

Cookie for competing!

I don't think 1985 was comparing Lavin to Norm but, rather, pointing out that the same posters who were eminently patient with Norm are now prematurely calling for Lavin's head. Subtle difference.

I supported Norm for a long time but I am perplexed that people aren't ecstatic about the direction of the program since Lavin took over. I guess I generally don't look for instant gratification. I'd rather be patient and give the coach a real chance to turn things around.

When you buy a crappy cheap car you don't get that upset when it breaks down so soon.

When you spend more for a car and the salesman touted it as the best car ever, and it doesn't live up to the expectations you will get more dissatisfied and quicker. (Was trying to use a car analogy for no more recruiting too but couldn't come up with one.)

I'm certainly not a Lavin fan either, but he deserves credit for the recent run. I truly believe some of the personnel decisions he's made were obvious, and that's not second guessing because plenty of us said so back in November. But I think he deserves credit for holding the team together. That's a big component of the job, and a few weeks ago Obekpa looked completely lost and disinterested, Jakarr was struggling, and Rysheed looked to be hitting the freshman wall.

He held them together and apparently convinced everyone to buy in. Thats a big part of coaching, keeping the team together when things get tough. He deserves credit for that.
It's not the first time we have witnessed Steve holding guys together. Some of those guys were crying a couple years prior after the Marquette beat down, so that senior year was nice to see. Players gatta play.

I'm just proud of all the humility being shown on this thread and on redmen.com in general.

I remember during our losing streak there were alot of posters speculating that Lavin no longered cared and wanted to leave the University. Now although no one know whats in his heart and mind ( Except for maybe Coach Keady and the Mrs) but the way he reacted when he couldnt get that Time out to sub in DLO. He certainly looked like a coach with alot invested in the Redmen.

Last night was his best coached game this year. It's not even close. Shortened the rotation and his guys played aggressive, smart basketball

well i don't blame anyone for being pissed when we started 0-5. heck i was mad too. However I feel the anger was more because we knew the team was better than it was and that we cared.

Wake me when we start recruiting again.
That thing he's good at.

Not sure if this will cause you to wake up or hit the snooze button but at least it's something :p

That right there shouldnt even garner a response :)

When you consider last game our staff picked up and walked out of the gym after he got tossed. Not like Rawle Akins is any good or anything

"According to the Daily News, De La Rosa is currently serving a two-game suspension for a flagrant foul against Rutgers-bound guard Mike Williams of Bishop Loughlin."

Our kind of guy. :cheer:

He didn't have to experiment this year. Jordan is the only new player on this team. Everyone else practiced with the team the entire year last season.

I mean he did, but he didn't have to.

I largely agree with what you wrote, since I would have shortened the rotation a while ago. However, just remember if Lavin played the guys by consensus that redmen.com wanted played, GG would have been buried on the bench. We wouldn't have found out that Hooper earned playing time over Max but ultimately neither warrants much time at all (guys on here would still dispute that). We went through a long stretch where nobody was playing well, hence the tinkering. Finally, there have been rumblings of problems behind the scenes with various players, with multiple benching of different players, and mini suspensions. What people here don't fully grasp is that UCLA fans, like Kentucky fans, live on one premise - to win a championship. While we would do cartwheels for the success Lavin had at UCLA, their "laid-back" "fans" wanted more.

Coming where our program came from, and considering we never had 7 years that were as good as Lavin's at UCLA, our fans should just ignore the UCLA asses, who don't realize their own glory days were largely one long run by perhaps the greatest college coach in history.

Is Lavin a master at X's and O's? NO
Is Lavin a strict taskmaster who will not tolerate bad behavior, missed classes, practices, or lateness? Absolutely
Is he still one of the best recruiters in college basketball - YES

If you look at our school's endowment, it's horrible considering we live in one of the wealthiest metro areas in the US. Some people here blame the lack of donations on Harrington, who raised the percentage of contributors from 3% to about 18% - still paltry. Anyone who thinks we can afford a $3million per year coach should take a look at your check book ledger and see how much you've donated in the past three years and how much of a $3 million salary that would cover. Only a literal handful of guys could respond to that question and say, "Really? I donated X million to St. John's" But none of them would, because those guys keep on giving, and don't complain about the state of our program.

Those that want the team to succeed, despite their criticism of Lavin, continue to post. Those that just want to see us implode have disappeared altogether.

I have noticed that, too. Makes you wonder if they are really fans and what their true agenda is.

I have been a big Lavin supporter, especially during the past few months when he was getting destroyed on here. I didn't agree with or understand a few of his moves with the roster, but still think he has done a great job here.

You cannot possibly know this to be true.
