I've been a St. John's fan and attended games for almost 30 years. One thing that's held true since Lavin is that the non-hardcore SJU fan or even the casual NY sports fan will generally show up when we have any semblance of a season. Mullin was a bit of an outlier in that his mere presence generated so much buzz, eyeballs and interest that we seemed to do fine either way. Hope there is a good crowd on NYE and if we get off to a good start in conference play I fully expect the attendance to follow. One thing SJU has always been able to do is attract the casual NY sports fan that follows professional teams, has no real rooting interest in any collegiate team, and is desperately looking for a bandwagon to hop on during the January - March period before baseball starts.

However, through all the coaching changes for what seems like forever, I have preached judging a coach after 3-4 years. Still believe that. And one word of caution about “higher ranked” recruits. Not all the time, but frequently that type player does not necessarily want to come to a situation where the most minutes are a wee bit more than half the game, it’s hard nosed defense or the bench, and the ball is shared by design; just saying.
This is a great point about recruiting. I think many probably overlook this
Agree Logen--CMA probably wants players that leave the ego at the campus gates--he preaches family and TEAM. This tempers who he will recruit.
Agree with everything that has been said so far but the one thing that is currently new for CMA is that he is finally at a school where recruiting will be much easier for him. There is s far greater amount of high school talent in the area than anywhere he has previously been. I was in Birmingham this past summer for the Adidas Gauntlet and took a drive and the campus of UAB makes SJU look like UCLA. The states of Missouri and Arkansas, like Alabama are not basketball recruiting hotbeds. There is not an abundance of talent. For the first time in his life he is at a school where he is surrounded by talent within a 90 minute drive from campus. The guy is a very smart guy and c’early Plays to the strengths he has and does not try to fit a square peg in a round hole. As opposed to playing 5 starters 30 plus minutes a game he can offer very good players 25 mi utes a game and good bench players 15 minutes a game to start. I see his recruiting being very strong at SJU going forward. I am very pleased with his first class and only see the level of talent improving in the future as kids see the winning, that 10 players all play each game, that the players seem to have fun and like one another and the staff and that there appears to be a great family atmosphere.
Now if we could only get more seats filled.
Great points RN. As for the empty seats, 2 things; the school shot itself in the foot by raising ticket prices so much in what was supposed to be a down year, and the buzz has not really gotten out yet with the non-hardcore fans. If the winning continues, hopefully the buzz will start in the next few weeks. We’ll see.
