Coach Anderson
Notable to me that 13 games in we do not have a technical foul called against anyone on the staff or the team.

Another indication of the culture change others have posted about.
CCM says F that! ;) :)
I was ecstatic when we hired Anderson and nothing he has done has changed that opinion. However, through all the coaching changes for what seems like forever, I have preached judging a coach after 3-4 years. Still believe that. And one word of caution about “higher ranked” recruits. Not all the time, but frequently that type player does not necessarily want to come to a situation where the most minutes are a wee bit more than half the game, it’s hard nosed defense or the bench, and the ball is shared by design; just saying.
If I’m not mistaken LJ played 33 min vs Arizona. So if the talent is there ,he will play more minutes.

This is a great point about recruiting. I think many probably overlook this
Agree Logen--CMA probably wants players that leave the ego at the campus gates--he preaches family and TEAM. This tempers who he will recruit.

It's still extremely early in Anderson's honeymoon period at St. John's, and not only this season but his tenure can still go one way or the other.

I'll say it again.... What gives me confidence in him is his nearly two decades without ever enduring a losing season, and what I believe is someone who has a chip on his shoulder after being fired at Arkansas. He may not admit it, and his smooth personality doesn't display it, but I bet he wants nothing better than to prove the naysayers in Fayetteville, Arkansas wrong.

I sense he's reinvented himself by bringing in Van Macon and Steve DeMeo. Valuable coaches who are known to be quality tacticians and teachers AND solid recruiters. Then you add a special assistant in Paul Pressey, who brings many years as an NBA assistant coach, to the fray and you have yourself a solid cast of coaches (I didn't mention TJ Cleveland on purpose as he came with Anderson from Arkansas). Pressey's presence may be invaluable.

Looking forward to what the rest of this season has in store. Enjoying the ride in the early going.
"He may not admit it, and his smooth personality doesn't display it"

This is cma:
you haven't seen smooth until you see Eddie Murphy play Velvet Jones on SNL this past saturday :)

That, and the other two that gives me confidence is his and his staffs recruitment (no being lazy then waiting till April to fill out the roster), and the player developement.

CMA is the real deal.
Agree re: player development. So far, so good, particularly when you're getting contributions from Roberts, Earlington, and Champagnie.
During a conversation yesterday with a highly respected poster, he said to me “if Iron Mike can do this with these kids, imagine what he’ll do when he starts getting the higher ranked kids here”. My reply “sometimes it’s a lot harder with the higher ranked kids(bigger egos, etc)”. There were no expectations this year. There will be moving forward, especially since CMA set the bar so high right out of the gate. To your OP, so far so good but still very early.
Wait I thought we talked about Porn ?

Agree with everything that has been said so far but the one thing that is currently new for CMA is that he is finally at a school where recruiting will be much easier for him. There is s far greater amount of high school talent in the area than anywhere he has previously been. I was in Birmingham this past summer for the Adidas Gauntlet and took a drive and the campus of UAB makes SJU look like UCLA. The states of Missouri and Arkansas, like Alabama are not basketball recruiting hotbeds. There is not an abundance of talent. For the first time in his life he is at a school where he is surrounded by talent within a 90 minute drive from campus. The guy is a very smart guy and c’early Plays to the strengths he has and does not try to fit a square peg in a round hole. As opposed to playing 5 starters 30 plus minutes a game he can offer very good players 25 mi utes a game and good bench players 15 minutes a game to start. I see his recruiting being very strong at SJU going forward. I am very pleased with his first class and only see the level of talent improving in the future as kids see the winning, that 10 players all play each game, that the players seem to have fun and like one another and the staff and that there appears to be a great family atmosphere.
Now if we could only get more seats filled.

Great points RN. As for the empty seats, 2 things; the school shot itself in the foot by raising ticket prices so much in what was supposed to be a down year, and the buzz has not really gotten out yet with the non-hardcore fans. If the winning continues, hopefully the buzz will start in the next few weeks. We’ll see.

Players who have tasted success help set the culture for new recruits, it becomes our way or the highway and you hope you hear it from a teammate and not the coach.

The SJU fan base has to feel that Anderson was a Christmas gift dropped in our laps last spring. He will continue to be successful because he puts his heart and soul into the job as do most college coaches.
Unfortunately SJU's two prior coaches, for whatever reason were unable to do that.

Coach Mike is an absolute godsend. Listen, we all love Chris Mullin. He is St Johns. But he wasnt a coach. Like Magic Johnson coaching the Lakers. Just wasnt a fit.

Mike Anderson is the real deal. i love this guy.

I keep having this recurring nightmare about our 11 game loosing streak(after a 10-2 start) of 2 seasons ago. That will not happen with CMA and this group of kids, but it’s entirely possible we hit a slump at some point. Especially during the toughest part of our schedule. I hope the board can stay positive about CMA and the kids if and when that happens.

I think you know the answer to that Mark. :)

If they do, it certainly won't be a result of coaching or effort by these players.

I've been a St. John's fan and attended games for almost 30 years. One thing that's held true since Lavin is that the non-hardcore SJU fan or even the casual NY sports fan will generally show up when we have any semblance of a season. Mullin was a bit of an outlier in that his mere presence generated so much buzz, eyeballs and interest that we seemed to do fine either way. Hope there is a good crowd on NYE and if we get off to a good start in conference play I fully expect the attendance to follow. One thing SJU has always been able to do is attract the casual NY sports fan that follows professional teams, has no real rooting interest in any collegiate team, and is desperately looking for a bandwagon to hop on during the January - March period before baseball starts.

Given the BE's depth this season, that's a very legitimate worry Monte. Just hoping that with CMA's coaching, the style of play, and playing 10 - 11 guys squeezes out a couple of extra wins in a brutal schedule.
Thinking 6 - 12 and be v. happy with 7 - 11.
We shall see.
Merry Christmas to all fellow Redmen fanatics.

I feel that with this hire, we are finally getting out of the “mom and pop” school of basketball management. Much, if not all of that has to do with our AD Mike Cragg. I think I’m years past, we may have not taken on CMA, because he’s not a NY guy. So much for that, the guy can flat out coach, and I am very excited to see what he will do in the years to come. I feel like we have finally won the coaching sweepstakes.Good x’s and O’s, a positive outlook, and the heart of a winner. It seems the kids play their heart out for him!

Nice comment by Vaccaro in today’s NY Post

FWIW one college hoops voter said we will likely be in with a Butler win, but added "But they could follow it up with a loss or there could be other massive results that change things. I'd say yes right now but I don't want to assume the landscape next week". This is from a guy who didn't vote for us in the recent one. Interesting...

It seems our recent past haunts us a bit with this stuff and they don't take us as seriously. I think top 25 should be about right now, not what you did within the past 10 yrs. You can't say most of the teams in the top 25 right now have better signature wins. We will need to work twice as hard to get ranked as Arizona and the like. At the end of the day though, even an NIT trip would be an awesome first year ranking or not.

AP poll is irrelevant for what's important. From an era when analytics were less relevant.

Glad there is NET or similar tools vs. perception of a handful of sports media who likely don't watch more than a few games or follow a few teams.
