Coach Anderson

“Coach Sutton’s legacy will continue on. He was a game changer in the lives of many through basketball. HOF coach and great man. #WellDone #RIP“
CMA reminds me of Coach Lou when he speaks, he always says the right thing or nothing at all. The man is just a real class act and 13 months after his hiring I can’t believe how far we have come and how fortunate we are. Finished last season with a winning record, a very good recruiting class, zero drama, the implementing of a new culture that was so desperately needed, and the highest team GPA ever. If I was a parent ( Monte Riley ) I would certainly be taking note.
What's mind boggling to me is he wasn't our first choice.

+ Mrs A....not just showing up...she is all in

St. John's second summer session begins July 6. Only will have workouts and players on campus if Gov. Cuomo allows students back on campuses across the state for a hybrid schedule by then. Remains uncertain. #sjubb

Per Zach
"Those guys will have to come in right away and impact our team." -- Mike Anderson on juco recruits Vince Cole and Isaih Moore.

Mike Anderson talked about LJ Figueroa in the past tense. Would seem like any thought of a return is not in the cards.
#sjubb (No surprise)

Mike Anderson said during "The Last Dance" he frequently texted his players about the show, and wanted to hear their thoughts about it, and what they learned. #sjubb

Mike Anderson says hoping to get players back on campus soon. Second summer session begins July 6. Uncertain, if school will be able to open by then, though. #sjubb

On Web-ex, St. John's coach Mike Anderson said his players were really upset that Creighton game was called at halftime. #sjubb

"Creighton was in trouble." -- Mike Anderson. #sjubb

"I anticipate we're going to have college basketball." -- Mike Cragg. Said plan is still to play games at MSG. #sjubb

"I am encouraged every day we're getting to a better place" -- St. John's AD Mike Cragg on state of college athletics. Said tell-tale sign will be college football.

Obviously so many things have happened since March so it’s easy to forget about...

But of course St. John’s is 20 minutes away from the semifinals of the BET for the first time in about 2 decades and the game gets called off.

You truly can’t make it up. On the bright side we didn’t have it as bad as teams like Dayton who was in the middle of a dream season with a stud like Obi Toppin and never got to see how it ended

Yes they were coach. Yes they were.

You can also add Rutgers as the Scarlet Knights was about to receive their first NCAA Tournament bid in nearly 30 years.

Another great example. Even SDSU, who often have pretty good teams, were a projected 2 seed maybe even a 1 seed in the dance. They won like 30 games.

At least it happened now when CMA is just starting to get rolling and not year 3 and 4 where I’m confident we will be a force

Cancelling the Creighton big east game at halftime didn't seem to be a big deal at the time because the season was going to end that afternoon but now I realize a win that day would have been a big confidence boost for the returning SJU players and could have benefitted Anderson's recruiting efforts.

In my mind we did win the game.

Yea, that's what makes the ending nice for sju fans. We played well in the BET, and didn't go home w a L. Something to build on and it keeps hope alive.

Posts like this aren’t going to win you any popularity contests around here buddy, we have a fragile psychological make up regarding that particular state of the union. :)

Hey that was my first NM!

StJ’s has a proud history of advancing the rights of minority students and athletes which it should promote.

Recall In 1951 at a time when many US colleges did not even allow African American students to attend classes, and fewer US colleges allowed African American athletes to compete on their athletic teams. St. John's did.

In 1951 St. John's played at Kentucky. The University of Kentucky attempted to renege on its agreement to play St. John's because the St. John's roster included Solly Walker who was black. Before the game the St. John's team was refused a place to eat dinner because there was no restaurant that would serve a "colored" man. The St. John's version of events is a bit different from those included in the below linked NY Times article. The entire St. John;'s team refused to eat dinner without their teammate Mr. Walker. It has been alleged that the injury that knocked Mr. Walker from the game was the result of a cheap shot purposely delivered by a Kentucky player. I also understand that the hallway that the St. John's players were required to walk to the basketball court was under the bleachers of Kentucky fans and when Mr. Walker and the St. John's team entered and exited the court the Kentucky fans spat down on them. (The allegation of spitting on black players by Kentucky fans during that era has been reported as the norm by other sources.)

The actions by the University of Kentucky and its fans were disgusting.

The conduct and courage exhibited by Mr. Walker, his teammates, coaches and St. John's University was meritorious and should never be forgotten or trivalized.

The memory of Solly Walker and his teammates should be memorialized by a permeant exhibit at Carnesecca Arena. The courage of Mr. Walker and his teammates and the trailblazing ways of St. John's University by providing opportunities to athletes and non athletes without regard to race should be embraced and celebrated by the men's basketball team and the entire athletic department.

Potential recruits and their parents/ advisors should be informed of Solly Walker and St. John's proud heritage of promoting and protecting the rights of all students and athletes. Recruits should be challenged to follow Solly’s example..

Yeah, I understand that Solly Walker has been previously honored by his induction into the St. John's Athletic Hall of Fame and also honored at half time of a game in 2019 however during these times of racial strife the memory and courage of Solly Walker should be celebrated for more than a 10 minute ceremony at a game while people leave their seats at halftime.

This 2020- 2021 basketball season is the 70th anniversary of the Solly Walker/ Kentucky incidents. In my opinion Solly’s courage and St.John's leadership in promoting equal rights should be celebrated with a patch on the St. John's mens basketball uniforms (SW#20) that would both serve as a reminder to the current players and recruits of Solly’s courage and St. John’s pioneering efforts for civil rights. The parch would also cause the TV announcers to explain who Solly Walker was and St. John’s leadership efforts during telecasts of St. John's basketball games.

SW#20

When St. John's Law School began, the super elite law schools still didn't admit, or had quotas on, minorities including minorities and Jewish applicants. Jewish and other minorities and recent immigrant group students made up a significant portion of the SJUL student body and helped contribute to a well-earned reputation for academic excellence because these minority students were shut out of the more elite schools, primarily at that time Columbia and NYU.
