Cluess

If cluess gets offered the job at sju, no way the school would or could block him. They would end up with egg on their face , and have an unhappy guy on their hands , a situation that no one wants.

Pretty much because it's the one job that cluess would leave for, iona has to lower the buyout. It will hapoen.

Cluess has a chip on his shoulder and wants to be here. At this point that’s more than enough for me. he’s a real coach. Something we haven’t had in a while.

I will refute this claim in the a.m.

I once thought that and it's why at one point I couldn't stand the guy.. until I met him and asked him about the incident that would support your claim
What is the issue with him on the part of SJU? His age? The MAAC?
The issue seems to on the part of SJU. Everyone thinks Cluess is the best available candidate, only the morons making the decision can’t see that. We are the only high D1 school currently without a HC. WTF???

Cluess is a good guy with solid coaching credentials. But he is a 60 yr old coach who has never been a high major coach or assistant. Nobody is beating down his door right now to hire him.

If SJU turns to him and he rejects them then he is OK with staying af Iona for rest of his career because that is where he is headed. Not to mention his alma mater. He isn't some 40 year hot young mid major who will have multiple opportunities. He's 60. Duke isn't calling...

Bold statement. I’d stop short of calling Cluess a “home run” hire, but that doesn’t mean that he’s not the best available hire, and a very good one at that. If it’s age thats the concern, they are making a huge mistake. Not sure what the concern is, just think they’re all F’d up over there.

Cragg didn't deserve that.
Moser I can’t comment on, you are right on with Hurley; in fact it was way worse than that.
Details?
Hurley was a very done deal, I heard that from a great (non SJU) source a good few days before Mullin’s announcement, so much so there was no Plan B. I got similar info from a different source after Hurley’s “change of heart”. IMO, he played Cragg from day one.

Exactly. When you consider his record, there must be a reason no program has snagged him. I know he lacks style and charisma, but perhaps ADs have also wondered if his style of play will translate? I couldn't care less about winning the press conference, but he would absolutely have to adjust on the defensive end.

THIS!!!!!! This is it. He left for Hofstra and there are some people who can’t forgive it. Can you believe that this is the reason they won’t hire him!?!?!

Let's get this done. I'm getting seasick jumping around reading this board, twitter, newspapers, etc.

Tim has been my #2 choice through most of this HC 'search' grind.
It seems very strange that there's been no movement by the Administration on his candidacy at this point, following the school being rejected by two other HC 'choices'.
And with Zach's earlier tweet that 'St. John's will continue its HC search beyond known candidates', I'm doubting he'll ever reach the finish line.
Too bad. He's well-qualified for the HC spot imo and seems to be a very good guy.
It seems more than SJU knows 'he's a 60 yr old HC and not going anywhere'.
It's foolish imo to ignore a qualified candidate who would quickly 'hit the bid' and meanwhile 'chase' long shots at this late date in the recruiting cycle and look pathetic in the process as our 'lead' choices decline our offers.

I asked the same question and was told that he has no interest in leaving the area, so that severely limits which schools he’d leave Iona for. As for his defense shortcomings, the guy has a .700 winning percentage with a rep as bad defensive coach. Moser has a slightly over .500 winning percentage with a rep as a great defensive coach. Just win baby!

I hear you. I actually think his defensive shortcomings are more a product of his offense and less about him not being able to coach defense.

In the end, Cluess just doesn't do it for me. But I do also realize we need a coach, like, yesterday.

What a mess this became.

Well, I won't continue to argue that Moser's winning %-age over the past 5 years should prevail since it's a moot issue, but you make a great point Monte that Tim's .700 winning %-age does seem to defang loud boos about his defensive 'lapses'.

And yet we are a catholic school that teaches “turn the other cheek” and “hate the sin love the sinner” What a bunch of hypocrites!

It is moot CD, but I do hear what you’re saying. Although his last 5 years have been far from consistent. I just have this thing for guys who are proven winners for a lot of years. It’s like guys who are successful at business for a lot of years. While past performance does not guarantee future results, it’s a pretty damn good indicator.
