They’re a bad matchup for us in my opinion. Their two 7 footers who start will cause problems. They can knock down threes also. Not the most athletic team though , maybe our pressure defense levels the playing field a little. We have to run them off that 3pt line. I think we lose this game but then win our 6 remaining OOC games. As everyone on here knows , basketball is all about matchups. I just think this is bad one for us.

Agreed about them being a bad matchup for us. Just hope the matchup problems they cause for us with size, we can counteract with athleticism.

IMHO, Wilcher, Ojiafor & Alleyne need to get 15 more minutes PT between them (at least) at the expense of Ledlum & Jenkins. Win or lose tomorrow Coach has to develop a bench and nothing we saw from those 3 guys yesterday indicated they weren't ready for more minutes. No way Jenkins & Ledlum should be playing 72 minutes between them.

Agree on Wilcher and especially Zuby getting at least 15 more minutes per game. IMO we are not going to have a successful season if we don't get Joel some help down low. Zuby really the only possible option at this point. Gotta ride with him now and hope for improvement by Jan. Not sold on Alleyne being more than a shot in the arm off the bench.

Monte just to be clear I was suggesting that between the three of them they get at least 15 more minutes than they collectively got last game. With respect to Alleyne, not sure we disagree that much as I believe he should get a good 15 mpg as opposed to 9 he got yesterday.

Yes! Completely agree, particularly on wilcher and alleyne. I think it should be rare for both of those guys to be on the bench at the same time. They both give us shooting on offense and speed on defense that is otherwise very lacking.

Wilcher’s time has been so limited so I don’t want to go overboard on the freshman, but wouldn’t mind if he played 15 mins a game at the point, can even slide Jenkins over to the 2 for some of that time. And alleyne just seems like exactly what we need on defense and offense. He moves his feet well and he’s so much more active than dingle on defense—we need him to guard other teams’ scorers and try to hide dingle a bit more—everyone blows by him; plus alleyne hits the outside shots too. If we eliminate the bad theees from Jenkins and ledlum and let Allene shoot 6 a game, I think we’ll be much better off.

Also, on zuby, need to see more, but if ledlum gets down to 25 mins a game (which probably better suits his game and conditioning), zuby can take some of those minutes at the 4 as well as Taylor/luis. I say zuby at the “4” but I think he should just guard the other team’s PF, since Joel has been in the high post a lot, zuby can bang down low on offense. And given the good size of our guards, we could probably also play a but smaller at the 4 to get some more skill on the floor occasionally with Joel then operating in the post.

ETA: I think Rick is also still figuring out what he has in these guys too. He’s a HOF coach so I expect that whatever he does will be best for the team. Unlike in the past, I doubt we’ll be banging our heads against the wall all season for bonehead coaching decisions (eg mullin Anderson norm etc)

Disappointing start to the season and this is now a must win to avoid digging ourselves into another annual hole - only this time it would be dug in November rather than January. This should be a Quad 1 game (assuming Utah finishes top 50), and most likely it'll be our only remaining Q1 OOC game. Win this and we'll be in solid shape.

Probably gonna be dogs by about touchdown and maybe an XP or 2 Pt Converstion too
Here is a synopsis of teams' last games from site, Winnersandwhiners.com
St. John’s was dropped 88-81 by Dayton in their semifinal matchup Friday afternoon, sending them to the third-place contest, failing to cover the line as a 1.5-point underdog. Utah battled but came up on the wrong end of a 76-66 decision to #6 Houston in their semifinal clash Friday afternoon, failing to cover the line as a 9.5-point underdog.

The Red Storm shot 48.4% from the field, including seven of 18 from three-point range and won the rebounding battle 36-28 though they turned the ball over 14 times. Joel Soriano led the team with 21 points and nine rebounds before fouling out in the game.

The Red Storm puts up an average of 74.3 points per game so far this season, putting them 212th in the nation. St. John’s pulls down an average of 40.3 rebounds per game (106th in the nation) while dishing out an average of 14.3 assists (152nd) per contest. The Red Storm is below average on the defensive end of the floor as they are 275th in the nation in scoring defense by allowing 75.8 points per game.

St. John’s shoots 42.6% from the field as a team this season. The Red Storm knocks down 8.3 triples per game while shooting 36.7% from beyond the arc on the year. St. John’s is below average at the charity stripe, sinking 69.7% from the line as a team.

Utah started hot but had long cold stretches in the game, which ended up costing them the contest against #6 Houston in the semifinals. Against Houston, Utah led 12-4 early and was tied at 26 with 5:57 to play in the opening half before getting outscored 13-4 the rest of the half to trail by nine at intermission. The Utes rallied to tie the game again at 56 with 7:09 remaining only to give up a 10-2 run over the next three minutes to trail 68-58 with 4:11 to play. Utah never got closer than six the rest of the way en route to the loss.

The Utes shot 35.8% from the floor, including 10 of 31 from beyond the arc, and turned the ball over 15 times in the game. Gabe Madsen led Utah with 29 points, hitting eight three-pointers, in the loss.
The Utes are 102nd in the nation in scoring offense as they pile up 81.5 points per game this season. Utah grabs 44 rebounds per contest (40th) while they stand 21st by handing out 19.5 assists per contest this season. The Utes are solid defensively, ranking 125th in scoring defense by allowing 66.3 points per game this season.
The Red Storm now have to try to slow down a Utah team that is capable of piling up points and who threw a scare of sorts into Houston Friday in the semifinals. St. John’s has been good on the glass but they are facing a Utah team that is the second-tallest team in the nation with plenty of size to work with in their rotation. The Utes have gotten huge games from Carlson and Madsen in the first two games of the tournament. Pitino has to get his team to actually commit to playing defense and keep Soriano out of foul trouble. I’m not sold that the Red Storm can do both of those things. Take Utah here as they put up enough offense to get the victory here.

Prediction: Utah Utes

Still can’t figure out what Soriano was doing guarding his man bringing the ball up court.
Wait a center was bringing the ball up? Where was Taylor or Alleyne to harass the crap out of him?

Surprised by Rick.

Couldn't watch 2nd half, but seems like the Dayton coach outcoached Rick there.

Maybe should have put in Zuby, and have him guard him?

Out of all the games we've played to date, this is the one I am least optimistic about going into the game. Of course going into the Michigan game we'd both only played once and Michigan appeared to be rebuilding also. Hope I'm as wrong on this one as I was on Dayton where I really thought we'd win.

Defense is probably biggest issue, but I really need to see a concerted effort to scale back Jenkins and Ledlum or guess just going to chalk this up to rebuilding year like I did with Mullin’s first year.

Ridiculous to compare this team to Mullin’s first year. Way more talent on this team and the coaching is far superior.
Coaching way better for sure, just meant my expectations
Basically gave Mullin a mulligan because he was Chris Mullin
On verge of doing same here.
