Butler, Sat. Feb. 6, 4:30pm, MSG (FSN) & 570 AM

Without Rawle and/or Maker.

17 wins total, 4-5 in the B.E.
Is that reasonable enough?
Reasonable enough if we are only playing half of our BE schedule. What happened to the other 9 BE games?

I think he meant 4-5 BE wins. To get to 17 they're going to have to win probably 7 or more in conference. They're not winning 12 OOC. Atlantis will be tougher that Maui was this year. The balance of the OOC would have to be cupcakes to even guarantee 10 wins OOC.

I'm not surprised by these blow outs. WE DID LOSE to Incanrnate, NJIT, some division 3 school in a scrimmage . We stink . We have 3 nice players Yakwe, Sima and Mussinni. At the beginning of the seasons I thought 10 wins would be possible at best. The team has competed hard and but Losing wears you down. We can't put the ball ocean let alone a basketball hoop. Better days too come.

SJU BB a couple of years away. Will SJU lose any of the fan base? Tickets will probably be raised again next season. Should just play all games at Carnesecca and try and make a profit.

Two points. First, the old Big East had a minimum average seat capacity that all teams had to meet. I assume that requirement carried over to the current BE. The capacity at CA does not meet that requirement. Therefore, we have to schedule enough games at MSG to meet the average capacity.

Second, if we eliminate the Garden from our schedule, you may as well shut down the program. MSG/NYC is our #1 recruiting tool. If we don't schedule MSG, they would drop us forever.

Troubling that Mullin consulted the box score during that entire interview and used statistics in his analysis of what went wrong. It suggests that he doesn't know enough about basketball to learn everything there is about a game by merely watching it once live from a single POV, as so many redmen dot com readers are able to do. Is it possible he's in over his head?

Shhhhhh! You'll only encourage some posters to start a "Fire Mullin!" thread. ;-)

IMO, the only thing worse than watching that game was the ridiculousness of this thread. Yeah we played God awful but the last time I looked we are still playing with a roster devoid of D1 players. Credit to the players and coaching staff for not making this the norm, but it is the reality of creating a D1 roster expected to compete in a top echelon conference from scratch months before the season begins. Just the way it is; criticism would be more appropriate if the coaches hadn't worked their butts off to bring in legitimate reinforcements immediately.

Instead of complaining I hope some now realize just how far we will have to go just to be mediocre. We win 15-17 games next year and that would be a tremendous accomplishment. I don't care who is coming in. 10 game jump from one year to another is really hard to do.

Yup, good to have a little fun to deal with tough times, but reality for next year is exactly what you said man. The following year, talk NCAA T possibilities, not now. This is total reclamation project.

In wonderfull Aruba!
I know not as nice as sunny Janaica :)
Thanks for great posts..,
Did not see, hear, note the Butler game Til now.

I've decided one can only be repetitious on SJU, this season, the start of the new regime!!!
So here's my - optimistic realistic - repetitious take:

This season does not count;
There is a lot of losing and frustration;
Main blessings are experience for the current players
AND successful recruiting and notariery has already begun to wit: Ponds, RF, Ahmed, LoVett...
I think in Shakespeare's original draft (Julius Caesar) he wrote:

Friends, Romans, St John's ticket holders:
We have come here to praise Mullin & Company not to bury him.

all the best

Anyone know what the headline is referring to?. It doesn't mention anything in the article, there are many sad truths art the moment

talk about misleading headline or the reporter left out a whole section of his write-up

Just keep doing what we're doing. Playing hard and bringing the top talent to Queens.

If we eliminate the Garden for a few years I'd also recommend dropping to the Patriot League so we get more wins. I'm sure the Garden and Big East will let us back in eventually.

What can Mullin possjbly say at post game press conf. ?

Brutal...

He could probably mention that at one time in the game Butler had scored 27 points off turnovers and at one point we hadn't scored a field goal after nine minutes of play. Now either Butler has a great defensive squad or we ............

I haven't heard anyone yet complain about the weave---like they did incessantly under the previous regime.

Probably because we move better offensively with the weave. Balamou's drives against Xavier off the weave would be a good example.

First of all, this year's results are really on Lavinwood Period! He had 1 good Recruiting class and then mailed it in..Jordan proved to be more trouble than he was worth and Obepka quit on the School and team by getting suspended before the BE Tourney. Just think how you would feel if Lavin were still on the sidelines.. Maybe Samson would be here but, would that have made much of a difference? Maybe, a game or 2? Same thing with Lovett, if he was eligible, maybe win a game or 2 more.

I have no doubts Mullin and crew will get the job done! and, there will be reckoning for the blow outs we are seeing this year. Many of the BE Coaches have already offered that Mullin is suffering for Lavin's Sins. Mullin was and is, BB Royalty and everyone knows it. Sure, this Year we are competing with low D2 or, even D3 talent but, that will change.

In many respects Lavin left the Barn open and the cupboard even more bare than Jarvis did. It seemed like Steve lost interest after that first year and really didn't ;live up to his press clippings. He looks smug and pompous on TV and, it annoys me no end.

I still think we might beat DePaul.. Other than that, forget this season and chalk it up to future development. Most of these Players will be gone or, role players next year and beyond. You can't even get mad at them because, they don't have the BE talent. It would be like whipping a 100 to 1 long shot , at the top of the Stretch when American Pharoh has already crossed the Finish Line.

Takeaways from the game. I cheated because I was awake at 3 AM and saw part of the second half on TV after watching the game in person. Total glutton for punishment

1) Yakwe leads the Big East in blocks. Sima when injured was in the top 5 in the nation in blocks. If they can actually work in tandem, they could be a force. Unfortunately, Sima looked like a guy with a broken hand who hadn't played in more than a month, and both were ineffective defensively - not a real presence in any susbtantive way.

2) If Mussini really is a two, and they decided not to start him the part few games, it means that Ellison was playing the point. If they were going to start Ellison at the point, if they had a lot of faith in Mussini being the 2, why not just start him at the 2 to get him more looks? Size, speed? A look into the future as to where Mussini may figure in the rotation?

3) Odd meeting during a timeout. Slice spoke to the players, and Mullin was in an animated discussion with all of the other coaches, stat sheets in hand. I never saw anything like that before.

4) I cannot for the life of me understand the seating arrangement on the bench. Beginning with Linfonte closest to the scorers table, then all assistants (Richmond, Mullin Slice, Matt A) sit together, then 1-2 players then Zendon. Nobody talks to any of the players during the game, not to prepare them to go in, or to explain some aspect of the game to them. Considering all the coaches on the bench it seems odd to me, but maybe that's what college basketball coaching has become - no communication between management and workers.

5) The game itself? We played horrible defense, and gave them any open look they wanted.

6) Other than girls basketball, and boys CYO, I never saw a team that went to the hoop without being able to finish layups worse.

7) Felix goes 1-4 from the line, and then launches a 20 footer a minute later. I mean if you can't make a FT with no one guarding you, what makes you think you can hit a 20 footer?
