“I’ll take the bullet,” Obekpa told The Post after the game. “He hit me three times and I told the ref and nothing happened. How many times can I let him hit me?”

And with this quote, I hope he gets suspended for the Creighton game.
Absurd.

I clearly saw two of them. One was a hard body bang under the Butler basket, all body, but hard clean hit. Ref could have called something, but wasn't clearly a foul. The others appeared to be pushoffs with his arms to clear space for himself. Also could have called fouls, but nothing approaching or warranting the type of hit Obekpa delivered.

Precisely.

Welcome to Division 1 Men's Basketball, St. John's. There's banging, clean and not clean, every game. Faced with either, you bang back hard but clean. Taking a shot at the back of someone's had in transition is nothing more than a cheap shot. St. John's has made a near habit of responding with cheap shots instead of the right way. Lack of disciplined approach.

100% accurate, but let's try be totally fair, and I don't know if Obekpa's post game lack of remorse even warrants being totally fair. If Obekpa play's like that - bangs, and uses his arms to clear space, he picks up fouls in abundance that the team cannot afford. So, to be completely fair, he is kind of bottled up. He complained to the refs, and then foolishly delivered a shot in the open court that I'm sure was a bit of a surprise to him when the kid crumbled to the ground.

No excuses though. It was a shot that in retrospect may have killed the season chances in one swift blow. Consider this. We win, we are 4-5 in conference 15-8, and Butler is 6-4, 16-7. Look at that, a win and we aren't far apart from a 22 ranked team. However look at the outcome and both teams are on totally different trajectories.

Great points.

Butler won this game because they had a solid game plan and executed it against a team of individuals that do not communicate on the floor. Butler doubled up on our guards on defense and the flat footed Harrison and Green were taken out of the game. Butler knew that we had no inside game, even with Obekpa in on offense and that was all she wrote.
Rysheed tried to compensate by driving to the basket but was bottled up easily without a banger under the basket. Remember there is No Sampson, Gift, or Sanchez let alone a player like a Rico Gathers or the JC Thomas. A good Butler coach recognized this and his much smarter team just played the Butler way.
As for the sarcastic editorial for this poor performance I will leave it to our resident alter ego Dr. Fun.

Let's face it, we were looking out of sorts before Obekpa's ejection. If Obekpa stays, does it help us make 3's or get more easy baskets? Not likely. We shot 16.7% from 3, and took a lot of them. If we shoot 75% from the line and 33% from 3, all reasonable goals, it's a different game. Butler looked prepared, we didn't. Their star Dunham started slowly, yet they were still up big early. Our star starts slowly, and we have no one to pick up the slack. We just don't have enough weapons.

During the game last, i disdainfully and admirably at the same time said that Butler reminds me of a good CYO team. Jones plays with some really bad, awkward fundamentals, such as going off the wrong foot or releasing the ball very early that he has played to his favor. Their point guard is short, heavy for a guard, but tenacious and an opportunist. Dunham comes out of a Hoosiers script, a white kid who can shoot the eyes out of the basket. Clearly they recruit at a different level, but have a bunch of heady, coach-able and teachable players.

For once we agree, I would love to get to Butler's level of recruiting; far better than ours for sure.

Well, what do you know! Not bad to be in agreement once in a while. :)

He's an idiot. Yeah, elbow him back, and get thrown out of the game. After you get thrown out, it was a layup contest, but you'll take the bullet, huh?
As I said last night, he doesn't give a shit about the team. It's all about him and screw the team.

This guy, along with Jordan (he can stay in philly where he wants to be.), and Lavin could all get the hell out of here after this season. Oh, and take the damn AD with ya too.
Time to do some house cleaning.

We all have short memories, but I can't remember a dirtier hit delivered by a St. John's player. .

Omar punched a Providence kid in the balls up here and I think got tossed or at least got a "T".
I was sitting not far away from him but was watching the ball and missed him.
Our son called on our cell to tell us the TV crew got a real good shot of it.

Mel Davis punched a player from the Italian National team in the face and knocked him cold. Although with Mel, I doubt it was a cheap shot. He was tough and strong enough to take someone head on.

I remember that play and that's not what happened.
The Italian player's face hit Mel's fist :eek:hmy:
