I hate to say it, but this makes a lot of sense. Why jeopardize People's health for sports until everyone has a better understanding of this Pandemic, its consequences, a cure, or a vaccine.
As much as I love sports, I have not heard anything so far that would make me feel safe to attend any large event. Right now, I talk to my next door neighbors from a distance.
I think you have the right attitude for all of us that are over age 65 with any pre-existing conditions. That said, I think for younger people we may find that a large number of them have actually already been exposed to the virus and may be immune and data seems to show that 98 percent of those of college age had mild or no symptoms. With newer and faster testing protocols I think that in a few months most Americans under 40 and certainly those with pre-existing conditions will be able to get tested immediately making attending classes and events easier to attend with safety in mind.
Honestly, I hope some of us older people have been exposed and recovered and we will know as soon as antibody testing is readily available.
As for this coming season I don't see me squished into Carnesecca arena anytime soon.
I disagree about the younger people 72. Since last November, my high school graduating class of 1965 from LaSalle Military Academy has been planning a 55th reunion that was supposed to be in May.
One of my classmates has a son in law who came back from a business trip to China in February. He was asymptomatic but gave the virus to my friend's daughter who got sick and had to be quarantined for 14 days. They had an infant in the home who fortunately did not get sick.
Another classmates son, daughter in law, and grandchildren all got sick from the virus. They are all in their 30's except for the grandchildren. the point is there is still a lot of unknown about covid-19. Our own Lee Green and former Georgetown player Dave Edwards passed away from the virus.
Additionally, if our children or grandchildren start going to events or back to school, can we safely spend time with them? They may be asymptomatic and infect us. Are they going to test people before they allow them to return to work, or test kids before they go back to school.
These are serious issues that need to be addressed.
Yes, there are many questions that need answering with some level of validity. I never said young people can't get the virus. To the contrary they seem to have been infected first and brought the virus from Europe and China when thousands of them were repatriated starting in January. There were 40,000 Americans repatriated from China DURING the China travel ban. Thousands of students and American citizens were repatriated during the European travel ban. Young businessmen and ladies brought the virus back starting in January prior to the bans. All 6 relatives of mine in Rome that were infected were under 60. My point is that we who are elderly are the majority of fatalities and we have to be vigilant until we either know that we already have had the virus or can be vaccinated.
I can't see any older adults who have not been tested safely attend games. Those who were tested for antibodies likely could feel safe. And yes, I think every single student and all staff must be tested by August.
My hope is that a tested antiviral drug will be available within a few months before a vaccine is developed.
