Bursting the Bubble: Why Sports Aren't Coming Back Soon

I'm pretty sure the NCAA has the final say. Right now coaches can contact their athletes through zoom, discuss team strategy, teach, and suggest workouts. The number of zoom calls is limited. They can not ask for video of the workout or any proof of a weigh-in. It's up to the athlete to work out.
The new Arkansas coach brought this up in a interview on my local ABC station. The coaches are getting nervous. They know some of the athletes aren't going to be motivated enough to stay in shape. It's going to quickly show which players are really dedicated.

Of course we can all speculate on when / if Sports will return on any sort of schedule or, what it will look like then. Ever since reading that Dr Fauci played HS basketball at Regis , I want to see him playing 1 on 1 with Regis Philbin . They can play outdoors somewhere . As for Sports to watch while we wait , I recommend to the Networks televising the following : 1. All 161 games of Roger Maris’s incredible season . Which also gets us to see Mickey , Yogi, Whitey, Moose, all together again . 2 . The 1955 World Series , all 7 Games . It would give all those old Dodger fans , who are still with us , a last look at Brooklyn’s only World Championship team . With all the Boys of Summer . 3. Pro Wrestling at MSG in the 50’s and 60’s when fans thought Antonino Rocca and Bruno Sammartino were competing . Along with the Fabulous Kangaroos , the Graham Bros and Killer Kowalski. Back in the day , most of us kids thought the Matches were real competition . As for when any of our Sports return is anyone’s guess . Stay safe , Redmen fans .

Excellent recall of those Oldtimers . If you recall , Pro Wrestling back in the Day didn’t play at MSG more than once a month . Otherwise , it was like in St Nicholas Arena or Armories , etc . And , it was on TV a couple of times a week . Here’s a few more , Nature Boy Buddy Rogers , Johnny Valentine , Count Billy Varga, Skull Murphy , the Dalton Bros., Dick the Bruiser .

I saw haystacks calhoun in the lobby of a chicago hotel. he was signing autographs. his hands were so big, that you could not see any part of the pen that he was holding to sign autographs with

I hate to say it, but this makes a lot of sense. Why jeopardize People's health for sports until everyone has a better understanding of this Pandemic, its consequences, a cure, or a vaccine.

As much as I love sports, I have not heard anything so far that would make me feel safe to attend any large event. Right now, I talk to my next door neighbors from a distance.

I think you have the right attitude for all of us that are over age 65 with any pre-existing conditions. That said, I think for younger people we may find that a large number of them have actually already been exposed to the virus and may be immune and data seems to show that 98 percent of those of college age had mild or no symptoms. With newer and faster testing protocols I think that in a few months most Americans under 40 and certainly those with pre-existing conditions will be able to get tested immediately making attending classes and events easier to attend with safety in mind.
Honestly, I hope some of us older people have been exposed and recovered and we will know as soon as antibody testing is readily available.
As for this coming season I don't see me squished into Carnesecca arena anytime soon.

Earlier this week a 5 year old girl died of the Virus in Detroit. As Panther said, it just is not worth it. It is not just people over 65 that are dying of the pandemic. Many younger people may have already been exposed and may have antibodies and while every death is tragic I believe it is a far greater tragedy when it is a young person and even a child. And let’s face it there is a much greater incidence of asthma and obesity in children today than there ever was. Kids are just not as healthy as in years past. They do less exercise , watch far more tv, play video games , all of which contributes to a sedentary lifestyle. Let’s hope governments and sports leagues act with extreme caution. After all it is just sports and not life and death.

I disagree about the younger people 72. Since last November, my high school graduating class of 1965 from LaSalle Military Academy has been planning a 55th reunion that was supposed to be in May.

One of my classmates has a son in law who came back from a business trip to China in February. He was asymptomatic but gave the virus to my friend's daughter who got sick and had to be quarantined for 14 days. They had an infant in the home who fortunately did not get sick.

Another classmates son, daughter in law, and grandchildren all got sick from the virus. They are all in their 30's except for the grandchildren. the point is there is still a lot of unknown about covid-19. Our own Lee Green and former Georgetown player Dave Edwards passed away from the virus.

Additionally, if our children or grandchildren start going to events or back to school, can we safely spend time with them? They may be asymptomatic and infect us. Are they going to test people before they allow them to return to work, or test kids before they go back to school.

These are serious issues that need to be addressed.

Yes, there are many questions that need answering with some level of validity. I never said young people can't get the virus. To the contrary they seem to have been infected first and brought the virus from Europe and China when thousands of them were repatriated starting in January. There were 40,000 Americans repatriated from China DURING the China travel ban. Thousands of students and American citizens were repatriated during the European travel ban. Young businessmen and ladies brought the virus back starting in January prior to the bans. All 6 relatives of mine in Rome that were infected were under 60. My point is that we who are elderly are the majority of fatalities and we have to be vigilant until we either know that we already have had the virus or can be vaccinated.
I can't see any older adults who have not been tested safely attend games. Those who were tested for antibodies likely could feel safe. And yes, I think every single student and all staff must be tested by August.
My hope is that a tested antiviral drug will be available within a few months before a vaccine is developed.

It sure is sounding like we will see some sports despite the dire predictions. It does not sound like their will be fans in the stands to start. Not even a guess as to how long that lasts.

They were interviewing Magic on the Today show this morning and asking him about last night's edition of Jordan special as well as when we might see basketball. He said it will likely be w/o fans but we'd adjust and be happy because at least we'd be able to yell at our TV screens again!
