Big East Tournament: SJU vs. Pitt Game Thread

Try not being such homers on this site, this game was there for them to win, I don't think Pittsburgh played very well at all. But it is hard to win a high major DI game when you can't shoot from the 3-point line. They are out scored every game by 18 points from the 3-point line. Every body loves Harrison but he is wild with his shot selection, he forces a lot of shots. Pointer is a tremendous athlete but has to develop a mid-range to 3-point shot. I think he has the potential to be a Malik Sealy type player. Phil Greene is a terrible point guard and it will be a major upgrade when Branch becomes eligible. Besides not being a high DI talent, he is not very bright. At the end of the half with 39 seconds left you need to get one good shot and Dunlap put up one finger to get a good shot sot what shot do they get Greene spinning around taking a tough jumper that was not even close. It starts a fast break fro Pittsburgh. He can not take that shot in that situation. The ball has to go to Harrison or Harkless. GG Achiuwa is just horrendous, he should be playing at a school like Central Connecticut State, or a similar school. The guy is in great shape with some good shoulders and arms on him but the announcers are dead wrond when they said he is a good ahlete, he actually is not a very good athlete, his foot work is so bad that he messes himself up and does not know where he is. On the bright side he is a pretty good free throw shooter. I really like Amir Garrett but if Garrett is a good baseball player he should concentrate on it full time because it is very hard to make the majors in baseball and you need to really just concentrate on that sport. What can you say about Harkless, he has it all. Tremendous athlete, very good ball handler for his size and a nice passer. If he can improve his range forget about it. I would love to see him come back but very players would come back if they are considered a first round pick. Look at Iman Shumpert, he left early but was picked in the first round and is having a nice year. Could he have been picked higher? Who knows. The only thing SJU has going for them is this years draft may be loaded if guys like Perry Jones, Harrison Barnes and Jared Sullinger go pro as expected.

I'm not saying this because I can't stand criticism.... I've got no problem with that.
We've got issues that need to be addressed. But some of the things you identified are way off base.
Watch the game a little closer if you're going to make pronunciations like this...

1) Dom has the ability to be Sealy-esque ? Have you watched any games this year?
Love Dom, has a ton of heart. But he's playing 40 mins a game and putting up 5 pts a night. Let's not compare him to a first round pick. His shot is non existent and his handle is a mess.
2) Phil may not be an all conference player, and no one will argue he shouldn't be getting 40 mins as a freshmen. But he has talent, and the 2nd best mid range game on the team. He's a role player. And that possession wasn't great, but with no ball movement he's being forced to create off the dribble. Forced. Not choosing to.
3) Our problem isn't going to Moe or D'angelo more often... it's that there is no 3rd option to goto ! Every game Moe and Dlo get theirs, but there's no help! We need a 3rd and 4th option in the lineup. And scoring off the bench for a few mins each half.
4) And finally, I think if anything Moe's handle is what keeps him from going pro this year. He's a small forward, he needs to be able to create for himself. And all season long we've seen him get stripped driving from the wing. His shot isn't Carmelo's, but it's not a huge liability. His ball handling is.

Criticize all you want. But if you're going to break guys down make sure you know which end is up. Half the things you knock guys for is out of their control, and what you claim they're doing well are the areas the staff is telling them they need to work on in the off-season!

one of our toughest seasons...ever.

No question about it. The leadership that put us in this position of having to play all freshman was totally inept.
On the bright side imagine if Roberts had to start from scratch again they'ed be lower than DePaul.

What a pathetic effort by the entire team and so called coaching staff....embarrassing.........

How could you knock the effort? These kids play six deep, with no size, and experience and they bring it harder than any team in the conference for 40 minutes. It doesn't matter if they are down 20 with two minutes. Disappointing for sure, but you cannot knock the effort.

Your right Malik Sealy had a better freshman year but look at Sealy's stats, he played 37 minutes a game and averaged 12.7 ppg in almost 38 minutes of action a night. His shooting percentage was 48% from two and 21% from three. I didn't say that Pointer was better than Sealy, I said he has the potential to be a Sealy type player if he improves his mid-range game. He had no confidence in his shot this year and it showed but he is long, athletic and has to the abilty to play great D.
Now I disagree with you in regards to Phil Greene. I think he is in over his head, he is a mid-major type player sho should be playing at a school like Cleveland State. He averaged 8 ppg and shot 37% from the field and 28% from 3. Statistically he had a better year than Pointer but it was because he had the ball in his hands all the time.
The bigges weakness with Harkless, in my opinion is he does not secure the ball strong enough. He had the ball ripped right out of his hands in the first half. That can't happen when your in the NBA.
Everybody loves Harrison and I understand why but they need a pure shooter. They need to see if Baron's son wants to transfer again and stay local.

I may have been too harsh in my inital comments. Because you're right about Phil in the sense that Pointers stats may be inferior, but he clearly has the bigger upside. I just think he needs a lot more confidence in his shot (Dom that is). He passes up open looks all game long. There's just no confidence there.

Can Baron's son transfer again? Would he be eligible for a hardship type waiver because of the situation?

Half of Pitt's players looked like fill ins for a lineup while our guys looked like a high school prom picture. It was men against boys all the way. Time to lick our wounds and say a Novena for Steve's upcoming epiphany.

dixon would have been Pitts 8th man on the court behind the refs. the refs took the momentum from us everytime we saw daylight

Dixon had nothing to do with it. Pitt would route the Johnnie's everytime. The matchups are bad. However you won't have to worry about Dixon as Gtown took care of them 64 to 52. goodbye Pitt.
